Well, this has been an interesting week for Jonas fans…
Just as more of us began to grow accustomed to to the Jonas Brothers hiatus which had a primary media focus on the Nick Jonas & the Administration Tour & lead-up to the side project’s impending album, with Kevin Jonas marriage news sprinkled in, another shakeup in the Jonasphere: Joe Jonas is most definitely back to work. Surely not in the same way that Nick is, but definitely *on*. Real entertainment news outlets are talking about it now, so it’s officially fair game around these parts. So what of it, Revelers?
Jump with me…
The first smatterings of news came through usual digital grapevine…a surprise guest performance here, hanging with friends there…and then almost without warning (to JB management, either…?), Joe himself descended upon the Twittersphere…not with much formal fanfare, but certainly with an impact that quickly rippled outward among fans. It was a big deal, without a doubt – especially for those of us that had been feeling the lack of him the most. It’s all very casual, very Joe, utterly charming (duh). It rocks, if that’s your bag – and as you all know, it is mine. Of course, as his Twitter started indicating something more than breakfast & hiking happening behind the scenes, let’s just say…one began to see that this was about to get…well…real.
Early in the week, there was a great, very Joe-voiced article on the upcoming RodeoHouston, which felt a little different from some of the press we are used to seeing regarding the group. Then came eyebrow-raising tweets about songwriting with the marvy Benton Paul, and with our beyond-beloved Bulldozer crew. After a couple of public appearances – most notably supporting Nick & company’s gig as house band at the VH1 Critics’ Choice Movie Awards (John Taylor in tow) – there was some clear networking going on in Joe’s world, and judging by my Google Alerts – it’s not gone unnoticed by the gossips. And further, we see some striking, legit Joe-centric articles have come out. Let’s check ’em:
MTV News – Joe’s statements about what he’s been up to and a desire to lend a hand in Haiti relief work made an impression on MTV News; placement of the video met with surprisingly positive response in places like the trendy-snarky fan-fueled LiveJournal gossip forum OhNoTheyDidnt (yes, I read it; yes, I love it…no shame!) and caught a small hold in the news cycle.
People – Joe’s happily detached, apparently, and looking to spend his energy on breaking into acting, says People magazine.
E! Online – Joe talks openly about a current burst of songwriting with musician friends, reading scripts & hoping to hone his chops enough to become a more “eclectic” actor.
So what does everyone make of all of this? As a big Joe supporter, I’ve been a little surprised & I’ve been impressed to see him re-assert himself on the scene this way. (Okay, understatement…I’m also more or less psyched with anticipation and my fingers are crossed hard for things to play out smoothly for him.)
Then as a Jonas Brothers fan – and this being a Jonas Brothers blog – it does make me wonder (as does everything ever, I suppose, hehe). A lot of us have been concerned in recent months with the future of the band. With Nick & Joe both now “solo” on Twitter, there is talk of missing Kevin, who’s pretty occupied with personal things these days. When Nick first established @nickjonas I felt a majorly jarring feeling, like big time. To varying degrees (and reading over you readers’ Twitters) I can see Joe’s getting one had some of the same effect. So if anyone wants to talk about that, please have at it in the comments.
Food for thought: I don’t think our fanbase is all that different from others in the way we crave contact with the members of the band. I think it’s interesting the way a lot of us also – apparently – crave balance. We all have our favorites. It’s a delicate equation. And because in a fandom like ours, where we’ve been spoiled to death since the early days with endless goodies that made us feel close to the whole band, we’ve also seemed to have developed a sense of time that’s something out of an alternate universe. Mere weeks (or less) without “direct” contact with all of them is clearly felt like eons, loaded with meaning. There’s not necessarily a lot of rational thought behind it apart from that change is jarring, and when we think things are out of whack…we feel it deeply.
More MTV News – According to Joe, 2010 is going to be a year of individual exploration and collective thriving for the boys of the Jonas Brothers.
It’s all…exciting, kinda scary, and certainly interesting to watch this all develop.
Anyway. Here. I thought this seemed appropriate this week – in large part because I just watched Labyrinth and am on a Bowie kick right now – as a tune to help us mull it over:
No matter where you stand, it’s a reminder that the plot is undoubtedly thickening in terms of how we (band members & fans alike) are all going to be navigating this transition to a new era of the Jonas Brothers, isn’t it?
So what are you thinking and how are you all feeling about the new developments?
PLEASE, BE HONEST!
