Great pic choice, cpaig! I love having them point at me.
I just watched Camp Rock with my daughter for the umpteenth time. Disney aired it again tonight. So now I can go to sleep with spacey Jason lines in my head.
In all seriousness, though, I have absolutely no idea how they are going to come up with a plot to substantiate Camp Rock 2. I am already nail-biting, because I would watch it if they did nothing but have the Boys paddle that silly canoe around in circles for two hours debating the gold-silver-copper-tin rule. 🙂 We know JB will be there, but will Demi be back? Will Disney showcase a new artist? Will Jason get his birdhouse? The questions are endless…
That movie seems to get worse every time I watch it. I want to like it so much, and I absolutely love and thoroughly enjoy HSM and HSM2 but CR is not that good. Except for Joe and Demi (sort of), and Nick and Kevin (poor Kevin, that role, ugh). Daniel Fathers, Julie Brown – painful! Alison Stoner and Meghan Martin – I can’t take it. The photography is so strange – the camera does not seem to be shooting the right things sometimes. I have to be honest. They’re needing Kenny Ortega big time.
Oh lord, I can’t imagine the plot! Regardless, I hope to see Kevin and Nick with much bigger roles. And umm, I’d actually like to see Joe and Demi kiss. 🙂
Interesting tidbit, I think the Camp Rock script was originally supposed to be HSM 2. Back in early 2006, we won a contest to meet the entire cast of High School Musical. We were told that HSM 2 had just been written/greenlighted/confirmed by Disney and would have a musical summer camp theme. Then, as we all know, it wasn’t and voila! Camp Rock with the JB’s. It just makes me wonder how it all came to be…
BTW – did you all see a lot of girls with birdhouses at your BU concerts? I saw a number of them here in Atlanta!
I heard Kevin say in some interview (maybe the MTV mobile thing, I can’t remember) that the most birdhouses he received in one city was like 62 or something. Can you imagine how many birdhouses he has now? He said he even got an actual bird once….it’s just crazy. He could open a birdhouse museum or something.
You know, I can’t love CR either; every time I see it I just want to re-write it to make it good. CR 2…now that should be interesting. I hope Demi comes back because I heart her. Her new album is phenomenal (I pre-ordered it through JB and got it in the mail today even though it isn’t out until tuesday. same thing happened for a little bit longer, i got it the day before its release).
Someone told me (could be hearsay) that they wanted the Jason character to be a certain way, Kevin wasn’t sure what they meant so he just did something and they liked it. Does anyone wonder why Joe played someone different and Kevin played someone different but Nick just basically played Nick? Isn’t he the one with the most acting experience? I mean, give the boy a challenge.
I am glad everyone is agreed on camp rock. I think the cool thing about high school musical was that you were watching it and thinking, “wait, this is really good.” It sort of took us all by surprise. But camp rock was so heavily promoted and shoved down our throats as a JB vehicle that it was bound to disappoint. And I hated the kevin character from the straight hair to the dopy phrases. When they played the CR songs at the concert I was initially resistant but actually ended up enjoying the set. It was well done.
I really wish they didn’t have to do cr 2.
and the bird house thing is too funny.
anyway, thanks for the great picture and i love this blog so much. It is just the classiest thing-from the pctures to the font used to all the smart, mature opinions. It’s the best!
I haven’t watched CR again since opening weekend…though I will probably buy it for LBF, because she does enjoy it (but I think more in theory than reality).
I actually like most of the album – I think the music worked. As a movie, though, it was just so obviously slapped together – poorly written, directed, shot, edited – and they should never work with any of that creative team again. And I had high hopes for Julie Brown to do something wacky…
…really how hard could it have been to make it 100 times better?
My main theory is that Disney was somewhat taken by surprise by the extreme success the Boys achieved* – the movie was in the can before they exploded – and it was made for that narrower Disney Channel audience that isn’t hypercritical of things like…well-made movies. And they should have known better after the HSMs took off. So they took advantage of the attention and the sales that would come with it no matter what, but there was nothing they could do about the crummy movie they had put them in.
*I know I was…when I first liked them I remember thinking “They’re so good, it’s too bad they’ll be stuck with Disney-level fame”…like most of the other kids Disney promoted up until then. Of course they always exceed expectations!!
OT – “The Jonas Brothers have fairly large, floppy bare feet.” Sean Daly, tampabay.com
This quote from the blog with Sean Daly just cracks me up. It is probably the best and most random comment I have ever seen about JB. I am picturing the Boys walking around the pool like they have flippers for feet. The visual in my head is too funny.
I enjoyed Camp Rock (didn’t love it — “hellyoo … character development…where are you?”)
To me it just seemed odd that there were these characters that got no development, but seemed to be important – and that we were just supposed to take that they are important because they are telling us so – like the uncoordinated drummer boy – other characters who would just be there. Odd.
I do like much of the music, but agree that it was poorly written, directed, edited, etc.
I like the Jason character – but I am no where near unbiased. I always look for the silver lining.
Amanda – I didn’t hate CR. I just thought that the writing and creative direction were less than stellar. And since I put my fangril “squee” in mock .html tags, it didn’t come through behind my “spacey Jason” comment.
I agree with mememoi, when in doubt, give JB creative control. I hope they will be able to play a much larger role onscreen and off for CR2.
I enjoyed CR, but yes it could have been better. One thing I love about HSM *is* the breaking out in song – then again, I am a musical junkie. When I’m not listening to JB, I’ve got on a Broadway soundtrack to something!
Personally, I thought Jason was the best character (I always love the comic relief characters) which is why I wish he had more screen time. Nick’s character was pretty pointless…sorry, but he just wasn’t memorable. They could have done so much more with him knowing he was a veteran actor!
don’t worry about liking cr-I think my expectations were way too high. It was just promoted so heavily and all the good lines/scenes were shown in the previews.
my guilty pleasure is the hannah montanna episode with the jbs, it was on again last night. That was the begining of me joining my daughter as an uberfan. Even though they only have a few lines they are precious and you can see them giggling as they deliver them. whenever my daughter and I are feeling blue we watch it.
i agree with all the camp rock comments – i just wasn’t all that impressed with it, though i thought the music and some of the acting was done well. i adore demi lovato, and thought she did very well. joe surprised me! he was really good. megan martin did a good job with the mean girl role, but maybe was a bit too strong? i thought she’d do better playing it subtle.
and YES, character development, cpaig! at the final jam when the girl comes out and wins – i’ve forgotten her name… – i was like, who the heck is that? oh, right, part of tess’s posse. her role could have been phenomenal.
jason makes me laugh. my younger brother and i quote him all the time.
honestly, what camp rock needed was a little kennt ortega.
and trish, my neighbor has his mechanical santa out already. o_o
Um. Yeah…i did not like camp rock. I couldn’t even make myself watch the whole thing it was so uncomfortable and awkward.
I can’t expect much from a disney channel movie…but i think CR was just awful. It was like they ripped a page out of a fangirl’s diary…or a fanfic or something…and turned it into a movie over a weekend.
And on the christmas in sept. There’s a store here that had a TON of christmas stuff out in JUNE. Not just a little here and there, but like half of the front end of the store was nothing but christmas.
I too was less than thrilled by Camp Rock. In fact – I hated it. Granted I wasn’t the target demographic, but still, it doesn’t take THAT much to satisfy me in a made for TV movie, as going in, my expectations aren’t that high in the first place.
I too agree that the biggest downfall of the movie was the huge cast. With that many characters – no one will have the ability to get enough screen time for any significant (or in CR’s case, any at all) character development. I did however actually really, really like the Brown character – Shane’s uncle. His accent made me happy.
And HA, Anna, I am with you. I honestly haven’t even seen the whole thing either. I had DVR’d the premiere and watched it later that night – I tried so hard not to fast-forward through parts – but I just really couldn’t take more than 1 minute of ‘Hasta La Vista’ or ‘Too Cool’.
I’m always trying to figure out if JB really is proud of the movie – and they find it to be good, high quality entertainment, or if they are just saying so, because, you know, they have to. And I sadly keep coming to the conclusion that they really are truly proud of the movie.
Makes me really curious (and nervous) about the TV show. I don’t like the idea of them doing a TV show. I feel like they are finally starting to get some respect as a ‘real band’ and a scripted TV show on Disney channel is going to take away from that. I know that I should just be thankful that the spy premise is no more. I would love to see LTD extended into a 30 minute reality show on Disney instead. That would be awesome. To fill footage time they could throw in some of their own sketch comedy routines (i.e. Joe and Nick’s smoothie bit on MTV Live about not caring about Nick’s heart) to stretch their acting muscles : P
On a kinda related note, I guess there is some controversy going down on the Hannah Montana set at the moment. Miley and Billy Ray want off so that Miley can focus more on her solo music career, and for obvious reason, Disney does not want them to go, so I guess they have been showing up to set late, etc.
Mae, I read that about Miley..somehow it showed up in my google alerts for the JB…
it’s funny that the thread turned to Camp Rock because last night I went to visit my family in Mexico (I live close enough to the border to go pretty much very weekend) for my grandpa’s birthday. And my niece (who just turned 5 last week) heard my cousin playing “We Rock” on her phone and started singing the ENTIRE song…in English when she doesn’t even know how to say ‘hi’. She even did the whole little dance with the arm flailing and “strumming” the guitar. I mean, it’s amazing how people in other countries who don’t even speak the language are singing along to CR and HSM songs…it was very cute (she also knows a couple Rihanna songs thanks to her hip mom)
As far as CR, I think I was kind of expecting a lot before the previews came out. While I love, love, LOVE Camp Rock, I did kind of expect a whole breaking out into song thing (my faves are Grease and Hairspray so maybe that kind of influenced my view a little). But maybe my love for the Boys blinds me from the poor storyline, character development and shabby choreography. And since they introduced the whole “Mitchie singing but Shane didn’t know who she was” thing early in the movie, it felt a bit rushed. And while I LOVED Jason’s character, it felt like Nick was just playing Nick. And I honestly did not like Meagan’s “Too Cool” or “Two Stars” songs. If the second movie had the Kenny Ortega touch, it would be amazing…
I like to think that HSM was “Grease” (cleverly brilliantly corny) and Camp Rock was trying to be more “Fame”(more earnest and where the numbers are part of the scenery)…but maybe not quite pulling it off.
Mae, do you really think they are super-proud of it? I am not convinced. I mean, I can see being honestly proud of anything you’ve accomplished like this, but also being able to acknowledge deep down that it is what it is. And they seem to have good taste in things, in general…but they’re not the type who would smack-talk an opportunity they had even if they were disappointed, since it would be so ungrateful. (Especially on the promotional trail.) That would be biting the hand that feeds them. And they are savvy.
If they get their way with how they are describing the new show, it may be a lot like you describe…more improv and Jonases-being-Jonases. But only if the execs are smart enough to give them a loose sort of leash, which…they may not be. I think the more freedom those Boys are given, the better stuff they do. And I always love the absurdist stuff they do on YouTube.
And with the Hannah Montana thing….what are they NUTS?! How mature. Why would you flip off your bosses on one project to focus on your other project…which ultimately has the same bosses? It makes so little sense I wouldn’t be surprised if it was part of a PR stunt (that Disney is a party to) to distance her in the minds of consumers from Hannah Montana. Because they are the ones to benefit from her increased music earnings as Miley, as well. (Yes, I am cynical about this stuff.) I will believe otherwise if she gets fired from her show AND dropped by her label.
I think Miley WILL get dropped by the label…
I read somewhere that when artists get signed to labels, they regularly get signed to a three-record deal. So counting the Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus set as well as Breakout, she’s delivered what she’s contractually obliged to supply.
I also read somewhere that the creator of the Sex And The City series wants Miley in that show..
Selena was offered a role on it as well but like the classy one she is, turned it down because she understands that having Disney on your bad side is not a good idea
Mememoi, as much as I love dancing to Camp Rock songs, she made me dance to it 8 TIMES in a row…my arm was extremely sore afterwards. When I told her I was tired, she proceeded to sing “You Are The Music In Me” from HSM2. For someone who can’t speak a word of English, she sings Disney songs pretty well. We always joke that she’s 5 going on 15.
mememoi, I love your analogy of Grease to HSM and Fame to Camp Rock. The biggest difference between HSM and CR is two words: Kenny Ortega.
Kenny Ortega is a brilliant choreographer and director. And he is the driving artistic force behind his projects – one vision and one person having drive and passion. Look at the number of people involved in CR: lots and lots. Always suspect and always trouble.
The script for HSM may have been lame at first (and probably was) but Kenny Ortega is the kind of director that can turn dross to gold. The CR script needed LOTS of work (characters, emotional truth, story-telling, you name it) and that director didn’t have the chops to save it.
And the choreography WAS shabby. I’ve been dancing my whole life, and the choreography in CR was not great.
But having said all that, did I enjoy the movie? Actually, I did. And the reason for that is two words: Jonas Brothers. They were pretty darn marvy, especially considering how much they HAVEN’T acted. And before you say Nick has acted lots, I will beg to differ. Kids roles in the big musicals are very light on the acting, heavy on the music. Nick honed his stage presence, his music, and his professionalism on Broadway, but not necessarily acting. And, in any case, screen acting is a whole ‘nother ball game. Many, many TV stars have tried to jump onto the stage and found it very different. Nick did a great job taking on what was essentially a new discipline. As did Kevin. And Joe? He was wonderful. Period. He is an excellent actor with fantastic natural instincts. I just hope that in CR2 they are given a better director and more creative control.
I will second you coolmom, in that I enjoyed CR, even if I wasn’t dying to view it repeatedly…and of course that I thought Joe especially was adorbz, excellent and totally well-suited to screen-acting. And the comfort level they have when they are acting together is undeniable and awesome.
And CR2 actually has an advantage of lower expectations for some of us….ooh, there are sooo many possibilities. Wish I could get in there. 😛
Hey…I wonder if anyone will ever leak that original “J.O.N.A.S.” pilot, now that it is the relic of something that will never be? I would kill to get a peek.
So, I’ve been shopping for hamster gear this weekend. Spice has finally worn me down re getting a pet, and a hamster is our compromise. As I was schlepping from store to store carrying a cage, bedding, etc. I thought: what if someone had a camera with a super-zoom lens trained on me? What would the tabloids be saying? Here are some sample google alerts:
Coolmom Overspending at Pets ‘R Us.
Coolmom is Rodent Fetishist
I mean, how bizarre would it be to have your every move under surveillance? What would you be caught doing and how strangely could it be misconstrued? Just sayin’…
Haha, that is so true…although there are those certain moments I see where I wouldn’t mind being caught in that paparazzi light…ie. a glamorously disheveled Heidi Klum caught on Madison Avenue with one of her children having a full-body tantrum. Sarah Jessica Parker walking her son to school and his shoes are on the wrong feet…I LOVE glamorously disheveled mommy-shots. Even though I know they are wrong (because the kids are being photographed). I don’t seek them out. (But they come up on some of the blogs I subscribe to anyway…)
Mae – Yeah…I always try to figure out if the guys like Camp Rock…sometimes when they talk about it…there’s a slight facial expression that’s like “i’m talking about it cause i have to. i would like to act like it does not exist however.” but other times they seem way to excited about it.
I have to be the different one again and say that high school musical was underwhelming. Well..for a “DCOM” I suppose it was good. Worth all the hype it gets, however…no. Vanessa Hudgens sounds like an air-headed bimbo…Ashley Tisdale looks like an overgrown Barbie…and Zac Efron always looks like he’s on another planet.
I was fine with HSM right when it first came out. A few airings here and there was okay. But when I can’t walk through target without being assaulted by images of the cast…I get a tad bit annoyed.
And it is so funny, coolmom, that you said that about the paps. I think that all the time actually. If I had photogs stalking me, the world would be convinced that I was insane. I tend to have conversations with myself, moving my lips without evern realizing it. I make crazy facial expressions according to what I’m thinking…and that’s just the tip of the ice berg for me. lol.
I think the JB are very excited that they made a MOVIE. Not that they think it’s bad or good, but it’s still a movie. When they say “our movie” or “we have a movie” it’s obvious they are proud. And they are young – they probably don’t think it’s great but don’t know how genuinely painful it really is.
On a sad note, we had to let our adopted cat go back today. 😦 My DH was having asthmatic issues. We have a betta (Siamese fighting fish) now though in a very cool tank. Making the best of it! Someday we’ll have a dog when I want to take that on.
PS Zac Efron’s overacting on sad/emotional scenes does not bother me whatsoever! The man is the most beautiful human I’ve ever seen.
Said rodent is not actually en famille yet. Next weekend we will be hamster buying, I wanted to have all the stuff first and get set up so little [insert name here] can be all comfy. I’ll leave the naming up to the girls, so it’ll be something fun, no doubt.
Said it once and I’ll say it again Thankyou guys I love just
reading all the stuff you write about esp coolmom.
I too love the Jo Bros esp Kevin for some reason he’s my fav
what the heck, he’s freaky GORGEOUS!! ENUFF said!!
He can come visit me any day, notice how I said he gets in
I never say he’s getting out lol lol lol. But enough about my
my insanity for kevin for now that is. I hope you guys keep
commenting on this site I love reading all of it.
Ladies – the fish already passed away. This really has been a sucky day for pets around here. 😦 I think it got shocked by the new water in the tank. Ugh. Now I have to get another one, and hope my kids are not traumatized in the morning when the fish is not in the tank …
Oh no, flamom! Sorry to hear about your pet troubles. 😦
I have enjoyed a lot of the DCOMs with HSM being my favorite, and IMO, most well done. The cast works very well together and of course Kenny Ortega is awesome. I love the soundtrack to it and enjoy every song whereas with CR I only really like the JB and Demi songs. The others are annoying…
I am really shocked about Miley. I don’t know why – should have expected something like this from her. She is such a huge idol for girls and it doesn’t seem like the phenomenon is slowing down either. I’m sure Disney is angry and will do what they can to keep her. To let down her young fans like that will surely cause some backlash! Once again, another teen star in too much of a hurry to grow up. It’s a shame.
Trish – I agree…if it’s true, it’s shocking to see the parents allow/encourage it. I think many teens are in a rush to grow up, it’s just a matter of whether or not the people looking out for them allow the kids to call their own shots when it comes to adult matters. But I guess if the parents are immature…
I have been wondering if it has been difficult them getting back into the groove of being at home in LA. Joe sharing a room with Kevin, Nick sharing a room with Frankie – which is very different from their touring set-up.
I wonder if there is a lot of bickering in the house. And I bet poor Kevin is nervously checking to see if there are girls on their roof.
I know they spent a lot of time together in close quarters on tour, but I imagine it is a little like coming home from college.
