I will NEVER get sick of this type of thing from the Guys.  Nick, Joe and friends (no worries – Kevin is in it too) explore their latent 80s hip-pop sides a little more deeply. I think they needed to add a line about the importance of cheese, but other than that it is a perfect parody/homage.

Here is some very special commentary from the younger generation brought to us by Gemrocks (Coolmom’s daughter, Spice, age 9):

It was a great video, hilarious from beginning to end, with wonderful choreography (Big Rob!).  As a Black-eyed Peas fan, I loved the first line.  Props to Nick, good disguise, I didn’t know it was Nick until the middle of the song.  Joe:  love the hair, it totally fits you.

What a weekend!

It was so surreal. We got on the plane in dark, cold and dreary Philadelphia, PA – flew over the rainbow (aka Minneapolis, MN) – and landed in a vibrant, technicolor Oz (Las Vegas, NV) complete with Emerald City!

There were lions, fountains, and Jonas….OH MY!

It really goes without saying that the show was awesome. After seeing 6 Jonas Brothers shows of various types (in store acoustic, short set, full set), I feel confident in saying that a Jonas Brothers show is guaranteed to be a great show!

This was such an awesome trip. Jonas imagery and Jonas fans were all over the MGM Grand and the rest of the South Strip. We were greeted with a Jonas concert promo in heavy rotation on all screens inside and outside of the MGM, there were posters everywhere, and the daiquiri stand outside of the arena even re-named all of their flavors in honor of Jonas! (I was dying to try Kevin’s Tropical Madness.) It was full on.

We briefly considered trying to wrangle some tickets to the 3pm show, but took in the South Strip (and the Forum Shops) instead and watched the sun set at the Venetian. We still had plenty of time to get back to the Hotel, enjoy some room service and get ready for the show.

The venue was one of the best we have been to, and we were much closer than we thought we would be. We were both on the floor in the front of the second sections. I was Kevside and Mememoi was Nickside. We were about 30 feet from the end of the catwalk which Joe and Kevin (especially) ventured down often. (Yay!)

The pre-show and interstitial music was AWESOME and included songs such as Elvis Costello’s “Pump It Up,” Tom Petty’s “American Girl,” Queen “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” the Run DMC with Aerosmith version of “Walk This Way” (This got a couple of dads up and dancing), Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” (everyone – especially those dads – knows the words to this song, BTW), REM’s “Stand” and finally Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline” just before they transitioned into the show with lights out and Queen’s “We Will Rock You“. Mememoi and I think they should somehow release this playlist.

The show opened with a cute video of the Boys introducing Honor Society. They were OK, and seemed to be on the stage for a really short time. More on them later.

Next up was Demi Lovato and she was AMAZING. We have seen her once before, in Camden, and I thought she was all right (keep in mind I was sick at the time and in a weird seat in the wings that had a weird sound swirl.) But she just hit it out of the park and was a great lead up to the main act. I was really impressed by “Don’t Forget” especially which just features her voice beautifully. Mememoi compared her to Kate Nash, which I think is apt.

TIME FOR JONAS! SQUEE!

I don’t care how many times I’ve seen them perform, I get so excited when the band starts doing their intro thing. The whole show was awesome (as I mentioned before). The staging was stripped down so there was no fire (other than their cool logo thing), nor any lifts, waterdrums, or costume changes, but the show was as solid as any we saw during the Burnin’ Up Tour proper. The fact is they don’t really need all of that stuff (as cool as it is).

Everyone seemed in great spirits and looked great. Joe was in top form (as were they all) and Kevin has really perfected his swoon-worthy “walkin’ down the catwalk and doin’ a little smile” thing. Nick seemed relaxed and ALBL was great! Nick replaced his usual Diabetes speech with one about gratitude, hope, and how much they love what they are doing and appreciate the fans. It was nice. He even gave us all some sage advice:

There are choices. Make the great ones.

He is quite wise for a young man of 16. (See that bit in the ALBL Part 2 vid below!)

There were also loads of cute chatty moments, Joe leaning on Kevin or Nick or Garbo (he even wiped the sweat off of JT’s face.) Jack caught all of his drumsticks, and the foam guns seemed more powerful than ever.

The format of the show was identical to that of other Burnin’ Up Tour shows with one major exception. Instead of playing “Can’t Have You” they brought Honor Society out again and played “Don’t Close the Book on Me.” I missed “Can’t Have You.”

Regarding Honor Society, I am not sold. Their sound is a little more “boy band” than I normally like. I don’t think they are used to playing huge shows, and they seemed a little terrified (I don’t blame them). Despite the Boys’ best efforts to pump us up, the audience was lukewarm about them (the girls around me all sat down when they came out, but they also sat during “I’m Gonna Getcha Good!”). Nick yelled at us for not singing “O-O-O-AH-O O-O-O-AH-O-OH”s loud enough (stop yelling at us, Nick). At this point I am finding them very derivative (80s keyboard, creeepy R&B stylings {sorry!}), and they are not fresh faced enough to pull off this high school schtick they are attempting. They need to focus more on the music and less on the schtick – s’all I’m sayin’. The Guys are working with HS on their new album, producing and co-writing, so I will not write them off completely. As I said, I am just not sold yet.

And I have to mention, even though I know this is picky – their “See U In The Dark” shirts are suspiciously similar to Kanye West’s “Glow In The Dark Tour” shirts. I will give them the benefit of the doubt and call it an homage. (Also, I will go on the record here and say that I am not the type of person who can’t love a band they hear cold live. That is how I discovered Weezer, Rooney, the Raconteurs, Lupe Fiasco, and N.E.R.D.) Enough about Honor Society.

The show was well covered in Vegas and they were on the front cover of the Las Vegas Review-Journal the next morning! So it was more than worth the trip!

…because I was unable to go to the free concert the Guys gave last night at The House Of Blues in LA for their family, closest friends, and 800 very lucky fans.

The concert seem to have had a very laidback feel with lots of special guests and covers of favorite songs. It was really a celebration of music, love, and friendship resulting in what seems to have been an amazing experience. It was a party.

I really know nothing about the show other than what can be gleaned from some clandestinely recorded vids that have appeared on YouTube, so I apologize if I omit anything.

From what I can piece together the Guys covered John Mayer, The Beatles, Bob Marley, Switchfoot, Coldplay,  and Stevie Wonder with the help of Jordin Sparks, Demi Lovato, Jesse McCartney, Dan Aykroyd, Honor Society and Frankie J (no, not that one). We also get to hear JT and Ryan cover a classic.

Moreover, we get to see a whole new Jonas Brothers – where Nick messes up and laughs about it, Joe sings with beautiful melancholy, and Kevin belts out in a way that would make any red-blooded woman faint flat out.

These are my favorite from all that I have seen today because they are (more or less) of great quality and because they each have a great sense of stealing a moment in the mode of any great bootleg. This night was obviously special in ways that can only be partially captured, but I feel blessed just to have these little slices.

Man, she looked pretty last night, and I like this version more than I have ever liked this song. Plus, Kevin is hella cute throughout.

I love Dan Aykroyd more than words can express.

Nice save Nick. I love that they let “us” sing this to them.

The Guys sure caused the ice rink to steam up as they performed at the Kristi Yamaguchi Friends and Family ice (and rock) show presented by Bayer Diabetes Care. The show, which was filmed on October 12, featured live music presented by Jonas Brothers, Demi Lovato, and Jordan Pruitt and also starred world famous ice champions Viktor Petrenko, Nancy Kerrigan, and Kristi Yamaguchi (natch.) The family-friendly show also included skaters’ children to much cute effect.

I recorded this, so I will admit here that I did much non-Jonas fast forwarding so I don’t have too much to say about any non-Jonas related ice skating except for this: I love Viktor Petrenko (I even got to see him perform at a live show once!). The doll routine was a little odd, but he pulled it off somehow, and his performance with is daughter Victoria was beyond sweet – and adept. All of the routines with the kids seemed cute, but I kept thinking to myself if I were a kid and I was sitting in a chair on the ice and my mom was skating around me I would probably cry. But that’s just me.

The Guys played 4 songs: “Love Bug”, “ALBL”, “On The Line” (with Demi), and “Burnin’ Up”. Each performance was beyond awesome, well filmed and edited. The Guys looked fabulous (as always) and they looked like they were having a great time.

We are also treated to some bonus Jonas in the form of  videos before “ALBL” and “On The Line.” In the first Nick talks about his mission of raising awareness for Juvenile Diabetes (a cause very close to his heart, as we know) and his new dogtag created by Bayer (different from his D-Collection dogtags). We also hear from fans who have been inspired by his message. The second (far more weep inducing) piece features Mama and Papa J recounting the challenge of Nick’s diagnosis and their partnership with Bayer.

Not that we should need reminding, but the Jonas Brothers are a class act.

Following their (perceived?) humiliation (and subsequent vindication – we love you, Jordin!) at the MTV Video Music Awards, the Boys have come out on top, in high spirits, and behaving more maturely than people nearly twice their age.

People reports that Nick said the following in a radio interview on the BBC regarding Russell Brand’s comments:

For us it’s cool to see that he recognizes we are gentlemen.

Gentlemen. That is the understatement of the century.

They say they had fun, and seem to be taking the teasing in stride. I think we should follow their lead (after doing whatever we feel is best in regards to MTV/Viacom)*.

For inspiration towards completing this task I will share with you this radio interview that Kevin, Joe, Nick, and Demi gave this morning to Scott Mills for BBC Radio 1. They are in London for the premiere of Camp Rock (among other things). It is good to hear them being so awesome and relaxed, especially considering all of the hand wringing we have been doing on their behalf for the past 45 or so hours.

More like 3″ – Kevin (good save!)

Our smallest resident Jonas follower, aka Little Big Fan and the one who started it all, will be five years old in July. She got this shirt over the weekend (it was all I could do not to get myself this one. I refrained and tried to convince her to get it…but she had her sights set on that one).

So, LBF is arguably much more in the demographic for Camp Rock than some of us superfans who, in the aftermath, are grappling with issues of, well, exemplary movie production or the lack thereof (and an inability to dislike it anyway). I wasn’t sure how she felt about the movie; she was a little fidgety in parts while watching it and quick to point out its unacceptable dearth of Nick Jonas, but then…she has worn this t-shirt twice since purchase, couldn’t stop looking at herself in it during ballet class, and told me she was wearing it again on Friday (I’m talking her out of it).

Since she is nothing if not a vocal and opinionated person, she was happy to oblige when I asked for her review of the movie and the album. I was totally impressed with her overall assessment. Here it is pretty much verbatim (with ME speaking in parenthetical italics, like so).

I loved it. (Why?) I liked all the songs. (All?) Well…there was…I liked Joe best (but say Shane, because his name is Shane in that movie). And I know the mom of the girl…the mom on Wizards of Waverly Place. I think she was funny because she says, “That’s also MINE.” That was a funny part. (Yes, she was so good!) *CHUCKLE* And I like when Kevin says, “Can you make me a birdhouse?” – I can’t stop thinking about it, that was so funny. And I saw that when Joe got out of the car, Nick got in his seat. (Oh?) Yeah…you weren’t looking. I liked the girl who was popular. (Really?) Yeah. I liked her song. (Did you like her the best of the girls?) No, I liked Mitchie Lovato. (Ha-ha. Any of the other girls or guys?) Um. Not really.* The other favorite part was when Mitchie put on the hat and put a bunch of flour on her.

The Boys just finished a busy week in FLA firming the DC Games. It seems like they had alot of fun! As we wait for the games to air this summer we can watch them do a quick interview with ET on the red carpet on 5.2.08.

I love the above pic. Nick gets his turn at the manpris ! I have to say that I think he wears them the best (even though Joe can rock just about anything.) Best of all…Minnie Mouse has clearly moved on from her brief “thing” with Joe and is now quite smitten with Nick. We say that is cool.
