It’s here Revelers! Volume 1, JONAS, Rockin’ the House is in stores and more importantly, in our hot little hands! Taken as a whole, this DVD is an excellent compilation of what is delightful about the JONAS show, and the Jonas Brothers themselves.
Let’s bask in the wonderfulness of it all, after the jump!
I have been very excited for the release of this DVD, and chuffed to discover that there is positive response from critics and regular folks (Amazon.com customer reviews, nice to see none is from “typical” fans).
There is clearly a niche for what we discerning types know that JONAS does so well: presenting a humorous look at “celebrity life & culture” that is not raunchy but enjoyable for many ages on many levels. I truly hope that the Jonas Brothers are aware of how very much people are enjoying their show.
The DVD is chock-full o’goodies for the passionate fan and the casual DVD browser alike. No less than seven episodes are included. Along with Groovy Movies, Wrong Song, Pizza Girl, Band’s Best Friend, and Chasing the Dream we also have two as yet un-aired shows: Beauty and the Beat, and Cold Shoulder.
Since the Revelers have been tuning in and blogging the series without fail as it has aired, I won’t discuss those shows we’ve already seen, but will focus instead on the Bonus Features, which include the un-aired episodes and an elaborate practical joke that the brothers played on Chelsea Staub.
You’ve Just Been Jo Bro’d was a hidden-camera prank in which Chelsea Staub thinks she has just been abandoned at a photo shoot in the company of a loutish crewperson, but the crewperson is in fact an actor who demolishes Nick’s guitar and asks Chelsea to cover for him. Unbeknownst to Chelsea the brothers were watching on camera and feeding the “crewperson” his lines to convince Chelsea he was legit.
Perhaps it’s just me, but I thought the prank fell somewhat flat, and seemed to involve a lot of people and set-up for not much of a payoff. In my opinion, it went on too long and really wasn’t terribly funny. It had clearly been “set up” for the DVD, and seemed more than a tad forced on everyone’s part, with the exception of Chelsea, who is almost certainly the nicest girl in the world, and one of the best sports.
The new episodes included are far more fun and worthwhile. Beauty and the Beat is the JONAS-universe’s take on beauty pageants. It’s interesting to note that everyone is fair game for the satire here—from the guys’ own voyeuristic enjoyment of the contestants, to the tough-as-nails pageant participants themselves, to Stella, whose superior attitude towards beauty pageants inflicts its own punishment when she suffers stage fright during her “final question” and ends up embarrassing herself on national television. In an interesting “art imitates life” choice, Stella takes on the role of the poor Miss Teen USA contestant who’s babbling remarks went viral back in Fall 2007. The Jonas Brothers were in fact the musical performers on that broadcast and their experiences undoubtedly informed this episode.
The second (and not surprisingly my favorite) bonus episode is Cold Shoulder. This show is Kevin-centric and I am unapologetic in my assessment of its adorableness. Kevin’s acting is spot on in his endearing adoration of the statuesque, Norse girl-goddess who stole his heart during their Scandinavian tour. In addition, Anya herself is hilarious, lifting, and tossing Kevin like a rag doll as they dance together and otherwise explore their shared eccentricities.
However, lest these marvy attributes aren’t enough, there is the fact that Kevin SINGS A SOLO! Yes, you read correctly. His warm, tender vocals enumerating the delights of his “Skandinavian Girl” are available herein for our repeated listening pleasure. What’s not to love? Kevin is to love, certainly, and if Anya shows herself too shallow to appreciate Kevin’s quirkiness then the loss is all hers. Clearly, the French fan/mime enthusiast who steps in to cheer Kevin up is far more worthy.
It was truly hard to choose, but my favorite moment had to be when Kevin is trying to learn all he can about Scandinavia so that he’ll win back his girl by cramming reindeer trivia and attempting to make Lutefisk. Lutefisk is fish that has been dried in a lye solution and then soaked in water (to quote Garrison Keillor “for a long time—but never long enough”) and is a Scandinavian delicacy. Kevin telling Nick how he made the dish, while Joe is trying to scour the portion he taste-tested out of his mouth behind him, is priceless.
Of course, I could go on all day listing things I love about the DVD, but what about you Revelers? How much do you love it?

Oh good heavens I love it. LOVE LOVE LOVE it. Thankfully, my boss has been out today, so I ran to Target on my lunch and have been watching all afternoon. I melted with Kevin’s solo and the rest of the time, I had tears streaming down my cheeks from laughing so hard. So many moments, but I’ll have to go back and watch this again to pull them out individually. Thanks for the post coolmom!
coolmom this post is incredible! I can’t wait til I get it..a little bit longer!
Ack! I was going to wait until I got paid next week, but I guess I’ll have to go clean out the couch cushions if this has the episode with KEVIN SINGING. We *died* over the snippet we saw online.
And Band’s Best Friend?! My DD will no doubt have John Taylor on repeat….
Just watched it again with DS and DH – Beauty and the Beat only. Watched both episodes with DD this afternoon.
Wanted to pass this link on – http://tinyurl.com/lrlugc
It is a coupon you can use if you plan to buy the JONAS DVD AND at least ONE other new Disney DVD (WOWP, Suite Life on Deck/Hannah Montana, Sonny with a Chance). The more you buy the more you save.
can’t use it if you buy JONAS only.
I got it thru Movie Rewards Club – http://www.disneymovierewards.com. If anyone doesn’t want to join, and doesn’t need the code on the piece of paper inside the video, feel free to e-mail it to me
Here are my earlier thoughts reprinted about the DVD:
OMJ ladies – it’s awesome. The 2 new episodes – I laughed all by myself during both of them…I couldn’t even fold that much laundry because I couldn’t look away from the screen to pick up something and fold it…
The JoBro’d thing was hilarious too. Nick! He acted! It was great. Joe smiled so big – I love that big smile he has.
These are the best boys ever (besides my boy of course). They are completely and totally lovable. Really great DVD.
Oh, and I finally see what they are doing with Joe and Stella. It’s just going to be the whole time going nowhere, just like we out in the audience know they like each other but they are never going to act upon it. Nobody is tied down on JONAS LOL. The way they treated Kevin’s relationship on Cold Shoulder helped it make sense to me. It’s not a progressive thing, it’s a repetitive thing.
Reminds me a little of Brandon on 90210. Remember how for a while in the early seasons he had a new GF every.single.episode? it was hilarious.
WEll some of you might be too young to remember that. Lucky you!
Haha, that’s so true about Brandon! Oh he was such a cutie.
I miss the original Beverly Hills 90210!
The remake is ok but nothing compared to the original!
I looked up the people link mentioned in our last thread – so interesting!!
http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20306225,00.html
They are so adorable. Vegas, too funny. Nick can’t even go alone to an R-rated movie yet LOL!
Kevin being the camp counselor makes a lot of sense based on the comment he made about being a student teacher in Season 2 of JONAS, but it makes me wonder why Connect 3 isn’t the reason they returned to Camp Rock. Hmmmm. That actually sounds very interesting!
My kids both love the new episodes!
But I don’t think they will even understand the Jo Bro’d stuff. I love watching the guys enjoy themselves, so I loved it, but it was really just about making Chelsea feel uncomfortable not necessarily pranked. I don’t think my kids will understand it – it’s too subtle. I guess it’s for slightly older children.
PS I loved the part where Joe is like “oh isn’t that the guitar you wrote Lovebug on” and Nick is all pretending to be so broken up over the broken guitar. SO funny.
I again got the Super-saver shipping (no charge) through Amazon.com so I won’t get my copy until probably next Monday. Why don’t I ever learn? (Stupid, stupid, stupid!) I should just cough up the extra dollars so I can enjoy it when it comes out!
Just a thought about next season of JONAS (and Kevin). They can make him a teacher’s aide or a post-graduate but they cannot make him a student teacher! That’s insulting to every education major or teacher out there. I had to go to college for 3 years (6 semesters) before I could do my student teaching. They need to make it a little more realistic or some of the young children will think that you can graduate high school one year and teach the next.
maybe he got the lingo wrong and that is what he meant. I also student taught. I finished my degree in 3 1/2 years and then spent an additional semester teaching 10th grade English literature.
FFE is down for “upgrading.”
I have 197 pts to go until Level 3. ha ha!
I watched the DVD yesterday with my daughter. We loved the 2 bonus episodes. It goes without saying that “Cold Shoulder” was my favorite, but I just said it anyway. Kevin is such a doll. He plays the wacky, eccentric character so well it is impossible not to love him. His triumphant trivia dance was adorable. The CSI spoof had me cracking up, but my DD didn’t get it, because CSI is an adult show and she has never seen it. I appreciated that little concession to the parents.
“Beauty and the Beat” was also well-done. The Belgian commercial was just too “flobnorg.” I enjoyed the way the episode showcased the special friendship between Stella and the Lucas brothers.
I feel like these two episodes demonstrated how far the brothers have come as actors and were great choices to premiere on DVD.
I have to say that I was not too impressed by the prank on Chelsea. She is a great sport, but I felt like it lacked the spontaneity that makes a prank a prank. DD didn’t get it at all.
Overall, I know the DVD will be on high rotation around here. I will probably be able to recite Cold Shoulder word for word before too long.
I am a happy fan.
Oh, so those epsiodes were just DVD premiere and will make it to air, then? That makes more sense.
I thought I had read (somewhere) that “Cold Shoulder” as least will air in December.
knowing Disney I feel all the episodes will air at some point for some reason. (Wiztober, Summer of Stars, something something LOL)
Finally got the DVD and had time to watch it!!!
We were all pretty meh over the whole prank as well. We generally gave it a *shrug*, “boy thing?” response.
BUT the new episodes were SO wonderful, yet again I don’t get why they didn’t get to be made more public. A little too scathing, a hair too biting in their satire of American girl customs for the 6-14 Disneygirl demo, maybe? Probably….but they were so so good.
I don’t think much has made me grin as big as Joe incessantly imitating David Caruso on CSI:Miami. So, so full of win.
Great episodes that really highlight the strength of the supporting cast, and feature some of the best guest talent I have ever seen on the show – Anya, the evil pageant girl, the manic pageant coordinator…lots of small brilliances, there.
Yeah, I think the new episodes are hilarious!
It’s really common to have “extra” episodes on DVD’s of TV shows, as an incentive to buy the DVD, natch. Almost all of the series DVD’s have them, and the extra shows usually end up airing at some point.
can anyone explain the pageant coordinator to me? why does she cry if she doesn’t pep herself up? because she’s an aging pageant girl? something else? why do they show her shaving? Seems really risque for JONAS. (loved it BTW)
I thought it was risque too….I guess that’s why I assumed they weren’t airing! But I guess it is indeed to soon to assume such things. Such is my recent scatterbraininess!
I thought the pageant coordinator was implying she’d cry because of the comparison of herself to the young, perfect girls. I could be wrong, but that was my first thought.
Facial shaving – my first thought was the miscellaneous hairs you get on your face. Then on second viewing I was wondering if they were possibly implying some transgender thing (!!) I’m not saying that’s what they meant, just that the thought crossed my mind. I think I’d vote for my first idea, but you never know…
oK, I had EXACTLY the same 2 thoughts.
Love the “hotties…ummm, young women!” quote
If they had asked ME (LOL), I would definitely have put some music videos on this DVD – “Keeping It Real” for sure, and possibly some others from the show.
I just watched the “Beauty and the Beat” episode tonight. I figured that they based Stella’s speech off of the beauty contestant who butchered the answer, but I didn’t realize that JB was there at that show until I read your post above just now. I didn’t realize they were there at all. (If someone told me, I forgot, and I also never watched the video, to my knowledge.) Thanks for letting me know.
The episodes were awesome, as usual. Loved the guys drooling over the beauty pageant contestants in “Beauty and the Beat”. Loved Kevin in “Cold Shoulder”. And Kevin and Nick in shades…. be still my heart. They look REALLY GOOD in them.
Loved the CSI music too. That was hilarious.
FINALLY the Nick Jonas National Press Club event is up on iTunes – FREE! Get yours now.
Search “National Press Club” in the iTunes STore to find it.
I also LOVED the evoked memory of the 2007 Miss Teen USA show, thanks to Beauty & the Beat.
We were actually in Woodstock in a little ramshackle B&B that weekend…I had not many months before fallen for the Jonai, and insisted on seeing how they did at the pageant (with the ulterior motive of dragging Cpaig into it with me….it worked!!!).
I remember the fragments of songs they got to play seemed to be reduced to an awkward level, but they sounded great. Joe wore one glove! And when they announced Miss New Jersey to come out in her gown while the Boys were onstage on the sidelines, Joe did a little ‘yes!’ fist pump to cheer for her. LOL.
Anyway, in the episode, I thought it was very cool and sweet how Stella began spouting all the snarky things (much as I myself might have said at her age, LOL) about pageant girls and the moral climax moment showed that it wasn’t as easy as all that to be up there. Some good writing in there.
Yes, I thought the whole episode was a beautiful satire that spared no one. Very clever and sly, with noone emerging unscathed.
It’s actually one of the better lampooning of pageants I’ve seen (“Miss Congeniality” is tops in my book, but the JONAS treatment is FAR superior to the 1999 film, “Drop Dead Gorgeous”, which was terrible, in my opinion.)
I’ll have to see “Miss Congeniality”!
And “Work it Out” – though the use of it to defend (rescue?) her nonsense answer somewhat befuddled me, LOL – I really like. Have we heard the complete song, between this and “Band’s Best Friend”. I just love the lightly harsh “ignorance, incompetence” lyric.
I don’t often totally own this, but I would LOVE to know what/who little Nickle is thinking of when he makes these commentaries on society’s failings. Like in “Dear God”.
So now I need to be able to listen to the song unencumbered by episode plot. When is the show’s soundtrack out again?!
I agree, I need to hear see that song’s lyrics because I suspect there’s more going on there than meets the ear, so to speak!
Re “Miss Congeniality”: MUST SEE! Sandra Bullock is a BRILLIANT physical comedienne and that film is her best, hands down. Plus, there is hottie Benjamin Bratt to look at, yum. Add to that Michael Caine, Candice Bergen, and William Shatner who are all a riot!
I’ll make the popcorn, come on over and we’ll watch!
That sounds awesome. Our mom is a big Sandra Bullock fan! I can’t say I’ve seen enough of her stuff…now I think I really have to get on it.
OMG, Benjamin Bratt, I forgot about what a handsome fella he was. I stood next to him on a curb for about .5 seconds once. Totally gorgeous!
me too. I would love to know too. I often think about it!
God only knnows about the soundtrack! I have tried SO hard to find this out.
a ha ha ha! This is the response I got about the NPC DVD – MR. JONAS! That’s priceless. So cute.
Hello,
The DVD is of Mr. Jonas’ speech to the National Press Club and the following question and answer session. It runs approximately one hour long.

PS Go to the LARGE size…
8> He is so beautiful. Thanks so much for the link!!
Btw Sondra, would it be possible for you to share Nick’s NPC speech? It’s not available here (big surprise) and I’d love to have it…
absolutely. I will let you know when it uploads.
Awesome, you’re the best! yay.
hopefully you will get a link soon. I will post it here too for everyone else who can’t get it on iTunes.
I tried box.net first and the file is 50MB so too big for that site. It’s just an audio file so YouTube is out.
Right now I am attempting SendSpace. wish me luck! sometimes I feel like such a complete Internet newbie.
I still haven’t got my copy of JONAS Vol. 1 from Amazon (and I saw it in the grocery store today!) I broke down and watched both “Cold Shoulder” and “Beauty and the Beat” on the internet. I can’t wait to see them on the “big screen”. I haven’t watched the prank on Chelsea yet, mainly because no one seems too enthusiastic about it. I’l wait until my DVD comes on Monday. I wish that they would put the original pilot of J.O.N.A.S. on the next volume as an extra (the one where they were secret agents). Has anyone ever seen it?
I just noticed that Nick has a new blog on Nickssimplewins.com. It has the photo of his birthday celebration and he mentions how grateful he is for the unexpected gift of the piano that wrote “A Little Bit Longer” on.
Here’s link to Nick’s blog. Nice to read about the birthday gift of the piano. I would love to have seen his face.

Awwww, I love that picture of the 4 of them!
Thanks for the tip, Jan, and thank you for the link, Coolmom!
thank you!!!!
I finally ordered the dvd! I hope it will work on my computer… The 3D movie does. : )
Can’t wait to watch these episodes in high quality!

Thank you so much, Sondra! I downloaded it… I’m so happy to get this speech on my iPod! It’s so inspirational.
it really is. I’m glad you like it! so cool they made it available for free.
This has got to be a misunderstanding, from their Bulldozer jokes, right? People are always taking them seriously when they think they are being funny.
from the Star Tribune:

Honor thy fans
When the Jonas Brothers’ opening act Honor Society undertakes its own tour, you could expect a lot of JoBros fans. That was certainly the case Monday at the Varsity Theater, opening night of the Fashionably Late Tour for the first act signed to Jonas Records. Many of the 200 young women were surprised at their JoBros bonus in the audience– keyboardist Ryan Liestman. Yes, he lives in the Twin Cities. No, he didn’t mind posing for photos and signing autographs. His wife, Katie, even snapped photos for fans who recognized Ryan’s blond dreadlocks. “This is crazy,” he told I.W. He confided that the JoBros backup band, which calls itself Bulldozer, is going to record its own album. After Honor Society posed for photos with seemingly every single fan at the Varsity, Liestman took the quartet to see the Legendary Combo at Bunker’s. I.W. bets nobody there recognized Honor Society.
Do you mean the part about Bulldozer recording their own album? Or Ryan taking HS out?
the part about Bulldozer recording a CD
I seriously hope that is true!
OK ladies, I am freaking out over the supposed “dates” for the supposed ‘12 Days of Christmas Tour’. The SC date is on a day I’ve had a commitment for a year! No kidding! Grr. However, Jacksonville is very doable…although that means staying overnight and more $$$.
I am betting they will be performing in the WDW parade that tapes the first week in Dec, which accounts for the 3 FL dates, then the 1 day break after Orlando! If my DD & I weren’t going to Disney in November, we could afford to do all 3 FL dates….rats!!
Anyway, I know I’m getting way ahead of myself. Just needed to vent/rant/squee.
And if this “tour” turns out to be a cruel joke, I’ll be $#%@. LOL!
oooh, wouldn’t I love to go to Jacksonville with you?! But it’s a school day, and right after the Sunrise show. I hate that the Florida dates are all bunched together like that. I would need a private jet LOL!
I’m working on DH for Orlando.
He’s crying. NOt happy tears. LOL!
Ooh! Would love to do Orlando with you! But considering we will be there exactly one month prior to the show, I can’t justify it. Besides, it goes against every fiber in my being to go to Orlando and not go to WDW.
Good luck with the hubby! I’m confident he’ll come through for you! LOL!
Anyone know what happened to TJ? All I get is “cannot Find Server”. Grr.
yup – they took it down until tonight. Probably to post the Christmas tour dates —— ooooooohhhhhhhhhh
SQUEE! Seriously, I’ve been practically hyperventilating. Just when I was coming to terms with the thought that we wouldn’t see them for perhaps a year….
Nothing so far, huh? I was hoping we would get some info this weekend. I guess we’ll get it tomorrow or possibly on Tuesday/
what did everyone think of the epi tonight? I am a little tired of Stella. I almost think we need a new friend on the show – maybe a guy! I only watched once so far and I’m really feeling sick so I probably shouldn’t judge. I’m kind of out of it. Nick definitely had some great moments I noticed but i have to see it again when I’m clear headed.
