Twenty-Something Else. [Berfday]

August 15, 2009 by mememoi

28816980-28817035-large

Well here we are, we knew the day was coming.  One of our (and most definitely MY) favorite teen idols is no longer a teen himself. What else can I say that I haven’t said before but, Joe Jonas, you’re the MOST!!

It’s a big milestone, putting one’s teen years in the rearview (I’m just gearing up to put my twenties in the same place *gulp*).  So to celebrate this momentous occasion, I have cobbled together a little musical tour of just what it all means, this crossing of the threshold into twentyishness.

Jump!

I decided to look into who was making aged-20-themed tunes out there. And to be sure, it’s hard to find what must be the experience of being a Jonas at twenty well-captured in song…but we’ll leave that craft to Joe himself, I think (I’m sure they could come up with a wonderfully universal take on the idea). In the meantime, here’s how some others are dealing musically with being in their twenties. Each song is literally named “Twentysomething” – the first four that came up when it was searched on YouTube – thanks to the draw of lazy YouTube conceits.

Clearly not a guaranteed easy row to hoe, Joe.  Brace for it.  [For the record: I had never heard of any of these people before making this post, expect varying results.]

A Finnish, Smiths-emulating “Twentysomething” by Supperheads:

Moral: The twenties might be the new status-quo-paranoid adolescence? Hmmm.

A Hip Hop “Twenty Something” by Chase Phoenix [1 F-bomb WARNING!]

Moral: Fame & fortune is on the to-do list for many in their twenties & well…OK, Joe can probably go ahead and cross that one off, ahead of the game here.

Those tracks were fine-to-iffy…these last two I like the most:

A Corrs-lite-y Canadian Poppy “Twentysomething” by Dala:

Moral: Being a twentysomething is the same beautiful struggle as the rest of it. No?

I really quite like that last one!! And last but not least…

A Jazzy, popular Englishman’s “Twentysomething” by Jamie Cullum:

Moral: For starters…Joe should count himself lucky to have so far saved himself the trouble of a useless BA in this economy…?

Not bad, not bad. That Mr. Cullum is ubercharming.

OK then, all well and good, all this introspection and…whatnot.

But really, Joe has plenty of time ahead to worry (and write) about this whole twentysomething-finding-yourself thing, I think.

So in fact, there’s really only one song truly called for under the circumstances, if we just want Joe to have a joyous, funky birthday (course we do):

It’s really the LEAST we can do…it’s been another backbreaking Jonas year in which Joe has not only met all our expectations and the challenges but has surpassed & appeared to thrive under them, making us feel like the luckiest/smartest/most discerning superfans around.  Here’s hoping he feels the same way about himself and does the day up right!!

WOO-HOO!

(With Love, from Sibling Revelry)

  2. on August 15, 2009 at 10:24 am Tiffany

We have this big joke in our family about ‘windows’ and its basically all about whether or not someone is in your dating window. Joe entered my window today, and its amazing.
Also, I’m interested to hear about what his birthday gift is, after all, we never did see him on that motorcycle!

    • on August 15, 2009 at 10:40 am mememoi

Oooh…how does that calculation go again? Lucky! ;)

    • on August 15, 2009 at 12:46 pm Elisa

I’m interested to find out what he got this year, too! :)

Our Dreamboat Captain is 20! And delightfully so, of course. And I predict, as he grows into his adulthood and autonomy, we’ll see even more examples of the great and generous heart he carries within.

    Happy Birthday Joseph! ♥

have you all seen the JONAS trading cards?

    http://tinyurl.com/pqek2c

LOL i bet they are awesome! They come out Aug 20.

    • on August 16, 2009 at 1:15 am tlatzotzontli

I wish we could see some of the actual cards! In middle school I bought a whole box like that of Backstreet Boys trading cards. hahaha. I still have them stored somewhere, but I never really had any use for them.

      • on August 17, 2009 at 3:07 am Sonnnn

totally. what use could there be for them? But I still might (read: probably will) get these. I’m pathetic. Oh but Merry put it in such a wonderful way – right Mary? I’m a “collector.” I LOVE THAT. It’s better than “someone who compulsively needs everything special to the JB.”

    Happy Birthday, Joe!
    Happy Anniversary, Kevin & Denise!

I have such love for this family. I don’t really know them, and I’m sure they’re not perfect, but I appreciate all they are and how they love each other and us.

It makes me really happy to hear Joe say in a recent radio interview that he’s really happy. Hope his birthday is a great one!

Happy Birthday, Joe! I hope this is his best one yet. : )

  10. on August 15, 2009 at 1:12 pm Monica

Oh happy day Joe, Mama J and Papa J! I too just love this entire family. What a lovely anniversary present Joe was 20 years ago! Today makes me think of the “Kevin dropping cake” YouTube video from 2 years ago, and it makes me laugh. A lot of what these guys do makes me smile!!

  11. on August 15, 2009 at 5:57 pm Jan

August 15 was my parents’ anniversary, also. There was an article in the newspaper once because four couples in my neighborhood all had August 15th anniversaries. All four of the marriages lasted until “death do them part”. I’m sure that Denise’s and Kevin’s will also.

My sister was born 5 days after my parents’ anniversary. She’s late for everything!

This day is full of celebrations! :)

    • on August 16, 2009 at 7:27 am merry27

thanks tlatz-he does suffer a bit from sharing a bday with Joe as you can imagine. He had his birthday to himself for 15 years and then Joe showed up and it’s never been the same :)

      • on August 17, 2009 at 3:09 am Sonnnn

gosh, that makes me feel bad. He sounds like a sweet guy! :)

  14. on August 15, 2009 at 9:42 pm Sonnnn

I can’t wait to hear details about his party! I’m also interested in what NickJ is going to do for his birthday.

  18. on August 16, 2009 at 12:53 am Sonnnn

did you all see these yet? They are sweet. Even though I hate to think of children dealing with diabetes. But I like how Nick is working so hard to make it better for them. He even talks about Type 2 diabetes on the Web site now which I also like.

such a great post mememoi. Of course that picture went right up in E’s room..it’s beautiful.

The 20s are so special…not that any other decade hasn’t been amazing but there’s something about being in your 20’s when you are no longer a child but still have so much possibility ahead of you.

I love the way it’s celebrated in song!

and looks like it was a roller disco post party concert..hope it was incredible but with that group I’m sure it was.

    • on August 17, 2009 at 3:09 am Sonnnn

you are 100% correct! the 20s were amazing for me. I learned and changed into a completely different person by the time I was 25. 25 year old Me did not recognize teenage Me.

  21. on August 16, 2009 at 8:42 am Trish

Happy Birthday Joe! And Happy Anniversary Mama & Papa J! :)
We made cupcakes last night to celebrate but they didn’t turn out too well. We were too busy preparing to leave today we kinda overcooked them…LOL!

So….It’s finally here!!!! We’re heading to Birmingham!!!! I’ll Twitter later and will give full reports tomorrow! My daughter is a nervous wreck! Wish us luck! :)

    • on August 16, 2009 at 9:44 am mememoi

      Good luck, have a blast!

    • on August 16, 2009 at 2:19 pm tlatzotzontli

I know that there will probably be a blog about the new Jonas episode but since it isn’t up yet, I think it’s fitting to mention the motorcycle with side car seen in the opening of the episode of tonight’s JONAS. I wonder if it was really Joe’s birthday gift from last year?
