M.E.N. Who Love Music. [Awesome]

August 5, 2009 by cpaig

menwholovemusic

Oh my gosh!… the last few weeks have been a blur of life obligations and a lil Jonasing, and the content on the blog has gotten a bit weak (from Mememoi and me anyway). I am here in an attempt to rectify that with a good and thorough post about Music Exploration Nights (aka M.E.N.)!

Come along and experience music exploration nights – including the

FULL M.E.N. PLAYLIST on blip.fm!

M.E.N. are what happen when JT, Ryan, Garbo, Rob, Jack, and Casper (aka Bulldozer – the Jonas Brothers’ backing band – and friends) get on the bus after a show with a long ride ahead of them. Likely still a little wired after having tens of thousands of people scream in their general directions and no doubt putting on a spectacular show, they sit back, relax, break out their iPods and share music with each other. Thanks to Twitter, and the diligent efforts of Mr. John Lloyd Tayor (*heart bubbles*), they also share with us. The result is (to date) 100-plus (and growing) songs of wide ranging genres with each night standing as a spectacular playlist to explore.

These M.E.N.  are special because, well – quite frankly – they really don’t have to share anything like this with us. They are all obviously passionate about music, and the lists also act as a primer of sorts for the thousands of JB fans who follow John (and the rest of them) because they are fans of JB (much like our own selves). And…these fans may or may not actually have any real interest in music. There…I said it. But I think it is true – not for all, but surely for some. So this is a way for the ‘Dozers to reveal a little more about themselves, while introducing us all to their idea of awesome music.

Go ahead and JUMP…

Last update 9.01.09

I am someone who LOVES music. I mean, if I am not listening to music, it is going through my head. Music is very personal to me. My music collection is just as valuable to me as the journals and ephemera I have kept over the 33 years of my life. I absorb the music loved by the people I love. I allow myself to be influenced, and my tastes are always evolving. Sharing music is also very personal. If I make a playlist for someone it is a very personal thing. But these M.E.N. are more than just personal.

Each night has its own context and flow. For instance, the first M.E.N. starts off maudlin, then gets down a funky turns whimsical then cynical then mooning then nostalgic, back to funky, then to reflective and bonding.  Each song seems to spring from one another. This is not simply a playlist, but a listening session. For that reason I like to listen to each list in order (because I am crazy like that).  I mean, each song is awesome in its own right, but for the truest M.E.N. experience listen in order. Of course, you can’t REALLY have a true M.E.N. experience (imagine the scene inside that bus, if you will), but this is likely as close as you can get.

You will find full track listings for each night below. I have featured 3 of my favorite discoveries from each night. There are tons of songs here that I love, it was hard to focus on the new ones, but that is the point of M.E.N.

In the end, the summer tour gave us 8 M.E.N. total and clocked in at 304 songs (with a couple of re-plays) and over 19 hours of music. Now that is what I call quality time!

I have created for you a nearly complete playlist of all of the songs (from Missing the War to Imagine) on blip.fm and you can listen here.*

And I want to know what your discoveries or favorites are from these lists!

I have also compiled mostly complete sets of iMixes you can buy on iTunes to get most of the tracks in six  fell swoops. Support the artists…BUY THE MUSIC!

wow-you really outdid yourself with this post cpaig!
Thanks for capturing the special-ness of MEN. I agree with you that they don’t have to share anything with us but they obvs are passionate about it. It’s just so sweet and sincere (the way I think JT is).
Thank you a million times for pulling them all together. So many of the choices make me smile (the Boss <3)! and some of them are real head scratchers and some of them I never heard of.
I look forward to listening to the entire thing and finding some favorites too.
Being a JB fan is just the gift that keeps on giving :)

AMEN about it being the gift that keeps on giving…esp. if you just chill out and let all the good stuff wash over you. So neat. :)

        lucky us!

    • on August 8, 2009 at 1:48 am Sonnnn

It so is. I can’t even list all the gifts I’ve received by following and admiring the Jonas Brothers & crew. It’s such a long list.

Cpaig – you rock. Thank you for doing this.

I gotta say, I’m more and more impressed with the people the boys surround themselves with. Christa Black is my new favorite. I’ve been having my 14 year old read her blogs, and now she’s hooked on them!

    • on August 5, 2009 at 8:59 pm cpaig

I love Chirsta’s blog too. I find her very inspirational at my age too!

And I agree with assessment of the Boys’ “family.” :)

    • on August 5, 2009 at 9:01 pm Barbara

Count me in too as a Christa lover and a lover of her blog. :)

    • on August 5, 2009 at 9:09 pm mememoi

      Me three!

Love her blogs & I’ve had “California Sunshine” on repeat for two days…!

They are all some of my most favorite imaginary/virtual friends.;)

    • on August 5, 2009 at 9:21 pm merry27

Christa is incredible! I am loving her story-such an inspiration.

the last MRN had 3 songs that were huge for me when I was younger: Born to Run, The Message, and Wham (Wake me up).
such a thrill to think that these talented young men enjoy them.

    • on August 5, 2009 at 9:02 pm cpaig

There are SO many Huge songs for me in these lists. “Whenever and Ever Amen” by Ben Folds Five is a HUGE album for me!

As was Vitology, as were the Blue and Green Albums by Weezer – Oasis – The Verve – Nirvana – The list goes on.

I am particularly enjoying all of the Funk and classic rock that I have skimmed in my years, but not delved into.

    • on August 5, 2009 at 9:12 pm mememoi

I agree…it’s funny that they hit on so many for all of us. For me, it was Oasis’ “Definitely MaybeWhat’s the Story Morning Glory” (from which hails “She’s Electric”) And Smashing Pumpkins’ “Melon Collie & the Infinite Sadness” (“1979″), The Verve, all of which were (understatement) BIG for me around the age of 16.

But there are so many other favorites they come up with in there…it’s a bit affirming but challengin/enlightening at the same time.

    • on August 5, 2009 at 9:19 pm merry27

and I am the opposite..know the classics but need to fill in the sort of middle years.

  4. on August 5, 2009 at 8:52 pm Barbara

This is cool! I wrote down all the M.E.N. song titles from JT, and listened to maybe 5-10 of them on youtube. The Blip link is great! I’m on song 5 and I love songs 3,4,5 – (Cough Syrup – the Jakes, Queen!!!!, and Earth Wind & Fire). Thanks for making it so easy for us to “explore”! :)

    • on August 5, 2009 at 9:03 pm cpaig

You’re welcome, but all the credit has to go to the JT and the guys for embarking on such a cool pastime.

I must say that this post was slightly delayed due to last night’s M.E.N., but I pulled it together.

Your blipfm list takes all the work out of listening to the songs! It’s so much quicker than looking up the youtube of each song (and trying to pick which one(s) to listen to). Thanks again!

        • on August 5, 2009 at 9:36 pm cpaig

True enough! I’ll take it! You’re very welcome! :)

I love this post! I adore MEN and I always listen along with there selection! My favorite song from last night was “When Did Your Heart Go Missing?” by Rooney! Its awesome and brings back memories of The When You Look Me in the Eyes Tour!!

Thanks for the post about blip.fm! I usually follow along via YouTube so that totally cool!!

    -Emily @emilypaigereal :)

      :D

    • on August 8, 2009 at 1:50 am Sonnnn

that Rooney song is one of my very favorites too – from Rooney, and in general. I also love I’m Shakin’ & Paralyzed so so much. I like all of their material a lot but those are particularly fabulous.

  8. on August 5, 2009 at 9:57 pm Barbara

Happy Valentine’s Day – Outkast . Surprisingly, I like it. (Could do w/o a little language…) Beastie Boys – Shake Your Rump – that I could do without! LOL.

    • on August 5, 2009 at 9:59 pm mememoi

I enjoy Outkast! Andre 3000 is one dapper fellow.

  9. on August 5, 2009 at 11:26 pm coolmom823

Outstanding, cpaig. THIS is why I love this blog! Can’t wait to delve and steep myself in new and old faves alike! :D

  10. on August 6, 2009 at 12:59 am Trish

Bulldozer, if you’re reading, please know that you all are so, SO loved and admired! :)

These MEN’s lists are wicked cool. In a way it’s like a trip through my life: Neil Diamond (little girl), Wham! (age 12), Nirvana (angsty teen)….LOL!

    • on August 8, 2009 at 1:53 am Sonnnn

you know – Joe, if you’re listening, Neil Diamond is so not your audience’s parents’ thing…it’s their grandparents’ thing! I mean, I”m older than most, and I’m too young for Neil (I do love him though, I always just figured it was a rule for Jews LOL).

My MIL loves him – we took her to see him years and years back and BTW he ROCKED – he is a LOT of fun, go see him if you can! He was in the round as well! :)

Anyway, Jazz Singer came out in 1980 and even I was very young then…”You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” – again, 1979, young!

It is possible for me to have an older DD than I do who likes the JB and Neil is grandparent aged. He’s 76. Just sayin’, Joe. :)

      • on August 11, 2009 at 1:11 pm Trish

Totally agree Sondra. I remember being about, oh…3 years old and MY parents were listening to Neil Diamond! LOL! While I do quite enjoy Sweet Caroline, I realized I didn’t really know all the words. Definitely not my generation.

  11. on August 6, 2009 at 9:59 am mollyanne

Thank you thank you thank you cpaig! This is amazing. My power was out from the time I got home from work yesterday to the time I left for work this morning (perfect timing, eh?) and I saw your tweet about this post being up. I honestly almost drove back to work at 11 pm last night to check it out! I am looking forward to having a down-time weekend this weekend- the month of July was NUTS (although completely the best month of my life- weekend-wise anyway) and I’m dying to have a weekend to sit in my pj’s and do nothing but listen to good music and watch Friends re-runs.

I’ve been slowly buying their playlists on itunes-that is, what I don’t already have. I’d love to buy them all right this moment but that would result in maxing out the credit card- UGH! Now I can at least listen to them and enjoy them for the time being.

I think my favorite discovery so far has been “Cough Syrup” by the Jakes. I also loooooove “Jesus Gave Me Water” by Sam Cooke. Can you believe I’d never heard that song before?! I can’t get enough of it. It’s also been so awesome to go back and listen to old Oasis and Ben Folds Five songs that I haven’t heard in ages.

    • on August 6, 2009 at 10:01 am mollyanne

Oh and I forgot to mention, I’ll take any excuse to listen to Bittersweet Symphony by The Verve. *sigh*

  12. on August 7, 2009 at 2:22 pm tlatzotzontli

Amazing post! Thanks for putting it all together. And I really like the top graphic too! So cool.

For me, it’s a lot of the classic stuff that I need to get more into. Some bands that I was really impressed/happy that they are fans of: The Jakes, Vampire Weekend and Squarepusher.

  13. on August 8, 2009 at 1:56 am Sonnnn

I have a request I need help with – does anyone have Jordin Sparks’ and Honor Society’s playlists from the JB World Tour?

I would like to have all of the songs before my next show in Sunrise…

maybe you could post them on box.net, or show me where to get them? I own Battlefield and Jordin’s 1st CD but not the entire 2nd CD and not the Honor Society tunes.

    • on August 8, 2009 at 8:55 am cpaig

I am a NO on Honor Society stuff, but I do have all of Jordin’s.

We listed the set-list in the Dallas post, but I believe both sets have changed a bit since then with HS adding the Band Slam song and Jordin adding Walking on Snow and sometimes God Love Ugly.

I realized that is not what you asked –

I will see if I can pull the playlists together.

      • on August 9, 2009 at 2:49 am Sonnnn

thank you thank you! that would be so helpful. I would like to be familiar with the material for the next show next week.

        • on August 11, 2009 at 2:22 am lenzmom

Sondra, get the whole Battlefield CD! It is wonderful. My boys and I just jam out to it in the van. I love Jordin’s voice anyhow, but the CD is great. Actually, “Walking on Snow” is probably one of my least favorite of the songs on the albulm. The kids love “S.O.S” even though they aren’t familiar with the original.

    • on August 10, 2009 at 9:57 am mollyanne

I just sent you some info on Twitter Sondra!!

    • on August 10, 2009 at 10:01 am mollyanne

Just saw about posting them on box.net. I can try to do that after work today. You can get “Where Are You Now” from the Bandslam soundtrack on itunes but see u in the dark is no longer there. If you want to take a listen now, go to andrewleeonline.net and to the “extras” tab- they’ve got all of the songs with lyrcs plus a youtube vid to go along so you can hear them.

  14. on August 10, 2009 at 7:46 am ponedbyjb

GAH!! Thank you SO SO SO much for this post!!! God knows itunes is going be the death of me, but it is so worth it.. this way I can calculate how much $ I need to set aside to have this amazing collection! Thank you so much for taking the time to do this for us!!! and seriously cough syrup.. I can’t even go a day with out listening to it… :) I didn’t realize how much I have to catch up on here at the good ole SR.. Good thing I am off tomorrow. ;)

  15. on August 11, 2009 at 11:19 am Bridget

I didn’t even know this blog existed til JT sent it out on twitter but wow. Intelligent conversation about JB.
I’m ridiculously glad you “said it”. As someone who is more then a little obsessed with music (especially with classic rock) it’s disheartening to see some of these kids who make up the JB fanbase. I mean, a girl at my show thought “Sweet Caroline” was a new Jonas song. I didn’t really know how to respond to that. M.E.N. has only encouraged me to badly want to have a conversation about music with Bulldozer – to the point where half the time I wonder “JB? Who’s that?” These guys really know there stuff and I love it.

    • on August 11, 2009 at 11:24 am cpaig

      We try! and Welcome!

I know exactly what you mean about wanting to sit down to talk about music with these guys.

I am glad they are making the effort to educate people. As I am sure you well know, knowing and loving all kinds of music just enhances the enjoyment of more music.

It is such a wonderful thing.

      • on August 11, 2009 at 8:18 pm Bridget

Oh I know. I work as a concert promoter in the NYC/Long Island area so all of the “craziness” that’s my life.

To only be exposed to just the “pop” (and sometimes generic – even if it is very fun pop) scares me. I mean, I heard (I forgot where) that Garbo likes The Bird and the Bee and I damn near threw a party. lol

        • on August 11, 2009 at 8:45 pm mememoi

So awesome. What types of shows do you promote? – So fuuuun. :)

  16. on August 11, 2009 at 12:33 pm Megan

Well I just typed up a huge gigantic spiel of how I wouldnt know where I would be if I didnt have these boys influence my life ……and well……I had way too many applications open at once and the internet service just went down because of the storm…..great…..I’ll be sure to get back to this……Oh. I should have known that one was coming! Its just that when I start typing I can NEVER stop!
    - Forgive me!

-Thank you for posting this. It is wonderful to read about these things on a daily basis. Thats one reason why Im a fan. I get to actually keep in contact—Here I go again-
I have to go! Ill BE SURE to bookmark this and write up another essay ;)

    • on August 11, 2009 at 1:12 pm cpaig

Welcome – hey, we love essays!

we also love to talk about how much we love all of these guys, so bring it on.

    Hey!
I’m not a JB fan…. there I said it! Not a real, real JB fan, I listen to their music sometimes, that´s it. I found your blog by coincidence!

Love your music share- discovery playlists! awesome! I love music, musician- play the cello, piano…
    I’ve got some suggestions so you can listen to, It’s eclectic;
love the Jimmi Hendrix songs, Quincy Jones, Charles Aznavour, Edith Piaf, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Mat Kearney, Brooke Fraser, listen to the 2nd Symphony of Resurrection of Gustav Mahler and try to find the translation of it(some classical won’t hurt), man the overture of Mozart Cossi fan tutte is awesome, Bobby McFerrin!!!, Gabriela Montero and her excelent improv’s, Take 6, Alex Campos, Camille Saint Saens and his 3rd symphony of Organ, Les Paul, and it goes on…! A question: do you guys like all type of music? like opera? cuz you could listen Maria Callas and her Vissi d’arte (read the translation of the song while you listen to it)
I can send more, if wanted of course!

Ok! so I hope you kind of research this stuff!

    Keep up the good sharing!

    God Bless…

Had a great time last night listening along and chatting with K, all the way until 4:30 AM. I was crazy tired when I got up this morning but there was no way I would miss out on the final M.E.N. Amazing choices from everyone. :)

    • on September 1, 2009 at 9:41 pm mememoi

      • on September 1, 2009 at 9:42 pm mememoi
