Ping Pong Enthusiasts: They Love Ping Pong. [Random]

July 6, 2009 by mememoi

PingPong2

Brilliant brilliance from John Taylor & Greg Garbowsky via JB’s YouTube, making like kindly “JBTV” hosts on a search for the ultimate ping-pong opponent for Nick…but who essentially descend from the heavens to whisk a handful of lucky Canadian fans off to spend some pre-concert recreational time with their idols…

(I think the girl’s expression above pretty much sums up at least the inner reaction of any of us at the prospect…yes/no?)

JT & Garbo coast along under the radar for a bit, until they find the perfect gang of fans, and once the jig is up…the rest is a bit of Jonas history.

(And I can’t imagine they’ll be able to pull this off again…but you never know!)

This is great work, guys.  I.laughed.so.hard!!!

Video & screencappy goodness after the jump…

“Nick Jonas beat me at ping pong. But we still tight though!”

    HI-larious!!!

I love that the kid had the presence of mind to ask Nick to sign the ball! Props for that, lol!

    This was cool. 8)

And when the girl got John’s name and realized who he was??? I fell out of my chair.

  2. on July 6, 2009 at 9:37 pm Jan

It was so funny! I saw it on John Taylor’s Twitter page. It took awhile for it to dawn on that girl who was interviewing her!

  3. on July 6, 2009 at 9:53 pm coolmom823

This video is a perfect example of why JB is worthy of my obsession.

How many massively popular music stars would:

    1. Have such a sense of humor about themselves.

    2. Bother to act on it.

    3. Be so awesome.

  4. on July 6, 2009 at 9:56 pm mememoi

Yup. & Their whole team seems to be this way. It’s unbelievable. And so gratifying, as a fan.

I don’t know what I would have done if I saw JT & Garbo walking around with mics though….I talk a good game but…

  5. on July 6, 2009 at 10:28 pm gityofunon

That kid right there is awwwesome (“Whatchu gon’ do, whatchu gon’ do about it?”)

But really, as much as I love Nick and want to meet him, I wouldn’t do it if it required me to challenge him to a game. Of ANYTHING. The boy’s wicked competitive and has the skills of a ninja.

  6. on July 6, 2009 at 11:13 pm Sonnnn

OMG! Look at quote from USA Today:

“Kevin is the eldest member of the Jonas Brothers at 21. He says performing is his “first love,” but he wants to try his hand at directing a few episodes of the next season of “JONAS.”"

NEXT SEASON?!? I never thought there would be a next season. Dear God, I want a next season so badly. Can I have it for Hanukkah? I promise I won’t ask for anything else. :)

I would LOVE that! Please, please, please let it be true!

    • on July 7, 2009 at 12:02 am gityofunon

*gasps, clutches chest, faints away, comes to muttering something that sounds like “next season.”*

    • on July 7, 2009 at 12:21 am coolmom823

I wonder, because the date on that piece is May 3, right around the time of the premiere. Wonder what the prospect of a second season is now that the ratings haven’t been all that everyone hoped they would be?

      • on July 7, 2009 at 12:51 am Sonnnn

do you think the ratings are really bad? I’m not sure if that is hype or bad publicity or what. How good could the ratings for Life with Derek be? or other awful Disney Channel series?

I just hope there is a Season 2. I liked the idea of them chilling out and just working on 1 project for 4 months in 1 place. I’m looking forward to them filming CR2 for that reason. (plus I’m hoping to see Nick a lot more in the sequel)

      • on July 7, 2009 at 9:50 am coolmom823

Not that the ratings are bad, but I’m not sure that they are huge enough to justify the cost of a second season. Disney is all about wringing every dime out of their talent, they are all about huge return for little input. I’m sure JONAS is an expensive show to produce, so without a big return it may just not be worth it to continue.

Please don’t think I’m saying I don’t LOVE the show. I DO!! But I’m just commenting from my perspective of someone who has been around the biz and has some experience with the bottom line of things. Artistic merit and a decent product are not always the consideration, unfortunately. :(

    • on July 7, 2009 at 7:37 am merry27

I don’t know how I feel about it…I am loving this first season so much and so many of the episodes are great to watch over and over again.
I just don’t want the quality of the show to diminish in any way the way most Disney shows seem to do.
They seem to just recycle the same plots over and over again. And the same props!

So I’m ok with one amazing season rather than a second season that no one feels vested in. Does that make sense?

      • on July 7, 2009 at 9:30 am Sonnnn

I used to care so much about what people thought and whether it was a clever idea to do the show. Now I just don’t care. I love the show and I want MORE. ;)

      • on July 7, 2009 at 12:05 pm Trish

That is a very good point Merry. I think I feel the same way as Sondra – I love it SO much that I want it to continue. But you are certainly correct about shows going downhill at full speed…. JONAS does have good writers, though. And Phil of the Future and Lizzie McGuire stayed good until the end. Hmm, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. :)

        • on July 7, 2009 at 7:53 pm gityofunon

Oh, yeah, Phil of the Future was great! I actually liked it even better as it went on. So I guess there is hope for JONAS if they do decide to keep going.

  7. on July 6, 2009 at 11:14 pm Sonnnn

Is it bad that Garbo’s glasses are like the ones the cheerleader’s dad has in Heroes? He does rock them but just sayin’.

    (so cute)

    • on July 6, 2009 at 11:21 pm mememoi

I’ve never seen Heroes so I am not sure who the character is or what that means, but I think the glasses are SO cool and Greg looks pretty much fantastic in them!

      • on July 6, 2009 at 11:49 pm Sonnnn

He looks fantastic in everything. He has a lot of style.

      • on July 6, 2009 at 11:50 pm Sonnnn

here’s Jack Coleman (remember Steven Carrington — Dynasty?!?) in his horn rimmed specs in Heroes:

        http://z.about.com/d/tvdramas/1/0/x/a/heroes3-hrg.jpg

PS You need to watch Heroes. It’s totally awesome. :)

        • on July 8, 2009 at 9:45 pm DaniLyn85

Jack Coleman is amazingly funny. He has the greatest sense of humor, and the blogs he writes on TelevisionWithoutPity.com are hilarious. I can’t see a pair of horn-rimmed glasses without thinking about Noah!

But Garbo looks insanely attractive in those glasses (or any, I suppose).

    • on July 6, 2009 at 11:44 pm Trish

I also love Garbo in the glasses. He is just so handsome, he looks good, like, always. ;)

  8. on July 6, 2009 at 11:27 pm cpaig

This definitely brightened my day – and I was having a good day!

Very clever – very cute – LOVED IT!

  9. on July 6, 2009 at 11:42 pm Trish

Oh my God. That totally made my day!

Coolmom – totally agree with you on all 3 counts above! :)

I can’t even begin to express how much I adore them all. I’m so glad you guys are here to understand!

  10. on July 6, 2009 at 11:48 pm Sonnnn

I can’t even believe Nick really toured Northwestern. Totally cute. But shouldn’t he major in Pre-Law if he wants to be a civil servant?

    • on July 7, 2009 at 12:21 pm Mae

Warning: I am about to become very negative.

Although I think that it is great that Nick is considering attending college (he will after all need a college degree to become President ; ), I feel horrible saying this, but I really have doubts as to whether Nick could get into Northwestern.

I know he probably got a really decent education through homeschooling but I just don’t think he would be up to par with kids who took, for example, all AP classes their Junior and Senior years and were in the top % of their classes. I also think that Nick took a HS equivalency test to graduate early – I remember an article with Nicole Anderson where she mentioned Nick was studying for it. He would have to literally kick butt on his SATs/ACTs.

I know Nick has mentioned multiple times that he loves Chicago and would love to go to Northwestern but I’m just no sure how realistic that is…

Regardless of all that I said above, I do think that it is totally cute that he toured the school with his dad.

      • on July 7, 2009 at 12:38 pm mememoi

        I disagree.

I worked in undergrad admissions at NYU, where I attended, and I think the academic restrictions are less severe in some of these cases than you might think.

Most schools that can have the pick of students aren’t just looking for grades and scores, but a “holistic package” in a student…they look a lot at extracurriculars, like study abroad, blahblahblah.

Basically, they are often as interested in students who are likely to actually apply themselves and commit to getting things done in the classroom, on campus and in the world, as they are in academics. Usually more so.

So I think Nick has a pretty good edge. :)

And this is really why celebrities (*that are talented performers, at least, not your Paris Hiltons) are often able to get into the best schools. Apart from the fact that, yes, it does make a difference if they know you can pay full price tuition, too…they also tend to be people who are clearly tested in terms of being able to accomplish and achieve under stress.

Any academic deficits can probably be tutored away…it is really harder to teach people to think critically and function outside of the vacuum of a classroom and achieve. (Nick seems like a smarty to me, though…)

Oh, and they also look at students as potential advertisements for their school, as well as legacy and endowment potential. That part sounds cynical, but universities are businesses, too. Esp. on an undergraduate level.

Nick will be able to go wherever he wants. I wouldn’t be surprised if he got scholarships.

At NYU we had lots of celebrity inquiries (celebs and their kids)…and the thinking seemed to be that there was always a way to work something out. The only exception I ever saw to this rule was Mel Gibson’s daughter not getting accepted into a very, very exclusive dance program.

        :)

        • on July 7, 2009 at 12:39 pm mememoi

          Yikes that was loooong. Sorry.

          • on July 7, 2009 at 1:51 pm Mae

Hah no that wasn’t *that* loooong. I appreciate another viewpoint! Since you worked in an admissions department I’m going to consider you the expert.

I’m just still hung up on the fact that Northwestern is ranked the 11th Best School in the US (according to Forbes). That school only takes the cream of the crop – students who have the both the extracurricular and academic resume and regardless of everything else that Nick may have going for him, I just don’t believe that he has a strong enough academic background to be fairly admitted. But eh, I’m sure you are probably right. Nick will get in because he is Nick Jonas.

I don’t know, something about being admitted to a school just because you are somebody just doesn’t sit right with me. Even though the somebody in this case is Nick Jonas.

            • on July 7, 2009 at 2:33 pm mememoi

Heh, no, def not an expert. That was just NYU…which isn’t exactly the same league (though I am not big on the statistical rankings)…

I totally understand your discomfort, from a purely academic perspective, but I don’t mean he’ll get in *just* because he’s Nick Jonas, but because it took a lot of intrinsic value for him to become Nick Jonas which may be legitimately worthy of admission officers’ consideration, depending on how you look at it.

Or maybe not!! Things change fast, what do I know?

Anyway, Northwestern may be more into the numbers than I know. If he was vying for a spot in a non liberal arts programs for which he was ill-suited I am sure they wouldn’t look twice at him… Likewise if he was simply rich, lazy and semi-illiterate…after all, that’s what Brown is for.

(OH SNAP. No, I AM SO KIDDING…sorry, Brown. That was mean. I totally have v smart friends who went there, inside joke.)

But seriously, the Ivy League, etc, is populated with plenty of not-brilliant people who aren’t even famous who are “somebody” enough only due to other kind$ of number$ that have nothing to do with anything they ever did, besides be born. All’s fair, one way or another.

I am sure that’s cold consolation.

              • on July 8, 2009 at 1:13 am merry27

I’m just going to comment cause my son is a junior and we are touring colleges and doing all that fun (not) stuff.
His reaction to the whole Nick at Northwestern thing was a big eyeroll. Because he would love to go to Norhwestern but would never think of applying and he knows Nick would be accepted there instantly.
I have to say I agree with mememoi.
Nick doesn’t have to go to college..he wants to. He can pay for it and add some glamour. I think schools will be lining up for him.
It will be interesting to see if it happens.

and mememoi-did you see Emma Watson is going to Brown?! I kind of had her pegged for Yale. odd.

                • on July 8, 2009 at 10:04 am mememoi

Really, she’s going to Brown? Huh. I don’t know exactly where I got such a low opinion of Brown, but I can’t shake it. I know some cool people who went but they just weren’t really…looking to learn, necessarily. So I always got a fake-Harvard party school vibe that is probably totally unfair. Maybe it was from what I heard about JFK Jr’s time there. :P

I think Yale is great, though, I’ve been the most impressed with people I’ve met who were students there. Way more than Harvard.

                  • on July 8, 2009 at 12:55 pm merry27

those were MY days when JFK jr went there and that’s what it’s reputation was…a kind of school where you went if you were rich and a son/daughter of a celeb. Or from overseas.
I still think it’s never a first choice Ivy for some reason..so yeah Emma Watson going there is odd.

                    • on July 8, 2009 at 1:01 pm mememoi

Yeah, it’s like the parallel Ivy!

            • on July 8, 2009 at 12:51 pm merry27

and mae I didn’t think you were being negative-just thinking out loud! nothing wrong with that.
and the whole college thing is just crazy..no rhyme or reason to any of it really. sigh.

      • on July 8, 2009 at 12:38 pm Sonnnn

Whether good or bad, he could get in just by being Nick jonas IMO.

But I do think his education as a homeschooler is probably going to be better than most regular high schools’. The work is more “real” and more intense.

I don’t know about the GED thing, but I assume Nick finished the curriculum for high school since you can go at your own pace when you are home schooling. And if he finished it, he got the complete education offered.

        • on July 8, 2009 at 1:05 pm merry27

I would say it’s a toss up…at most high schools you have all kinds of classes including advanced placement classes that will give you an excellent education if you choose to take advantage of it. Home schoolers are usually pretty motivated but of course they can go through the motions or excel as they choose. But Nick is so bright and has truly had so much more hands on learning than the average teen through his travels and his work with diabetes. He would make an excellent student at any college I think. :)

          • on July 10, 2009 at 10:28 pm Sonnnn

I have been thinking more about it, and homeschoolers have to work with the local school. So we know the curriculum he was using is challenging and the local school approved his graduation. It’s not a GED.

BTW Joe did the same program and was 18 before he finished. So, we all know how Nick is. He also drove 2 yrs before Joe did.

            • on July 10, 2009 at 11:38 pm DaniLyn85

Yes, Nick’s determination is amazing and I think that is what will make him so successful in college. :)

I wish I had his kind of drive, even now in my 20s.

  11. on July 6, 2009 at 11:53 pm Sonnnn

we are all getting so excited in my house for our upcoming shows! less than 4 weeks til the 1st one. My kids are so excited! yay!

And the bathroom is really coming along. It should be mostly done by Monday, and then just waiting on the countertop to be fabricated, and the glass shower door to be custom installed. :)

  12. on July 7, 2009 at 1:19 am Sonnnn

in case you didn’t see it on Twitter Lisa, thank you so much!!!!!!!!!

Greg Garbowsky is one cute bass player, and I should know because I’m married to a cute bass player.

    • on July 7, 2009 at 7:21 am merry27

      so sweeeeet!!

    • on July 7, 2009 at 9:31 am Sonnnn

yay for the rhythm section! I’m married to a drummer. :)

    • on July 7, 2009 at 12:11 pm Trish

      That’s so cute, MKTIW! :)

  14. on July 7, 2009 at 7:30 am merry27

    great post memeoi-awesome screen caps!

I honestly couldn’t believe it when they were jsut wandering around like that. My daughter recognized JT when he wizzed by in a car.
Of course Garbo with glasses (LOVE) and JT Without glasses may have thrown everyone off a bit.

But they are so adorable. And so many celebs are not as funny or sweet in real life as their material makes them out to be and that’s why I love the JBs and their band. They are so naturally clever and funny.

And I actually love that when they do realize what’s happening they’re excited but still pretty chill about it all.

I love when they are playing ping pong and you can see the girl taking a picture with Joe on the side of the table.

And Nick’s so sweet the way he goes easy on the guy but wins anyway.

I hope they do this on a regular basis.

  15. on July 7, 2009 at 9:32 am Sonnnn

Joe is mentioned so much and he never plays ping pong LOL.

My DH says (not quite the word he used but close enough) that not only are the JB, but the band is also, adorkable.

  16. on July 7, 2009 at 12:10 pm Trish

Can’t get enough of the Bulldozer love! :) They are just such awesome guys.
My daughter and I plan to spend the entire day of the Atlanta concert hunting them down, LOL! There are some pretty cool places near the venue that it wouldn’t hurt to look, like…old record stores, diners, etc. We realize we probably won’t find them, but it will be fun anyway!

    • on July 7, 2009 at 4:41 pm Tiffany

My cousin’s recently informed me that there is a Rita’s in Tampa. We’ll probably be scoping that out before the show as well.

Also, the girl I met in the m&g line at my show got to meet the boys again at Stadium of Fire. She said they actually got to talk a little more this time.
      Talk about lucky.

      • on July 8, 2009 at 9:51 pm DaniLyn85

I think I knew that there was a Rita’s here, but I can’t remember. Where is it?

      • on July 8, 2009 at 10:32 pm DaniLyn85

Please IGNORE my last post. The reason it seemed so familiar to me is because there’s literally one right down the block from MY APARTMENT. Yes, I realize that I am lame. I know there’s a couple around here (in Tampa, Carollwood, Lakeland) and apparently here in Riverview which makes me a genuis.

So, yes. Please ignore my stupid comment above. lol

  17. on July 7, 2009 at 8:25 pm Elisa

I’m a little late… But I just loved this!! Oh my goodness. JT and Garbo are so awesome in it. I think they could have a bright future ahead of them as reporters. ;) (Or they could just keep doing this band thing and tour the world with the JB… Whatever. Lol)

That screencap (the first one) is HILARIOUS. Hahahaha. Honestly, that girl scares me to death… When I first watched the video, all I could think was “JT & Garbo, run!! Save yourselves!” :D And to think that she got to meet the Boys… Boo hoo.

And Nick… Well. I love the boy. Honestly, that moment at the end of the video when he looks into the camera and smiles (that would be the last screencap… thank you very much for that, Mememoi!) – SIGH.

Having said that, I do agree with you, Gity… I’m not sure I would play sports with him either! Or I guess I would, actually… because he would beat me at just about anything and then he would be all smiley and happy. Which would make me all smiley and happy. (Of course I would pretend to be really bummed first… “Oh MAN!! I really wanted to win! This is not over Nicholas… Oh well, I’m over it now. Fancy a diet coke?)

Lol, feel free to ignore me! It’s almost 3.30 am and I’ve gone crazy. :P

    • on July 7, 2009 at 8:41 pm gityofunon

      LOL, I like Gity!

  18. on July 7, 2009 at 8:29 pm Elisa

P.S. Lol @ the look on the mom’s face! Looks like Garbo’s got a new fan. ;)

And yeah, the boy’s name – what WAS that?

    • on July 7, 2009 at 8:34 pm mememoi

      Eula Berra? Ula? Yula?

No clue. But I liked his gumption. LOL.

    • on July 8, 2009 at 1:18 am Trish

LOL, I just noticed that! Yay for bringing another mom into the wonderful world of Jonas.

  19. on July 7, 2009 at 8:47 pm gityofunon

One more great line (from Joe to Nick): “It doesn’t have to be about relationships. It could be about animals or trees or plants…”

    *starts humming Poison Ivy*

  20. on July 7, 2009 at 8:49 pm gityofunon

    Hmm… wrong post, eugh.

  21. on July 8, 2009 at 9:58 pm DaniLyn85

I swear, I have been saying “Nick Jonas beat me at ping pong. But we still tight though!” all day. That kid is hilarious, I’m glad they picked him and not some screamy teeny girl.

But oh my GOD how adorable are JT and Garbo? If I saw them out and about like that before the show, I think my heart would be racing so fast I wouldn’t be able to speak clearly. Sooo glad for this post, I love them!

(I don’t know how it happened, but I swear to God, I had no idea Joe was even there until I read this! I’m going to claim it was my crappy flash player! I still love you Joe!)

  • Disclaimer, etc.

Sibling Revelry is a personal Jonas Brothers superfan blog and we are not associated with anyone other than ourselves. While we attempt to support our content with research where appropriate, this blog is made up of opinion and speculation (and sarcasm!) for entertainment purposes only. We are not the Jonas Brothers, so any comments directed to them would be better posted at one of their own sites listed above, in our Blogroll. If you have any questions...you can contact us here.
