A Question of Career Staying Power…[Honors?]

January 29, 2009 by mememoi

grammy_bna

For any of us with our heads deep in the clouds as regards “our” chances at the Grammys, here is a bit of a letdown piece from Todd Martens of the LA Times music blog Pop & Hiss.

He assesses the crop of Best New Artist nominees, and while he sees some sort of merit in our Boys, he surely doesn’t call the award chances in their favor at all, as Rolling Stone did recently.

I am simultaneously thankful for the reality check and typically annoyed by the hurdles that seem to forever be set between the Jonases and formal industry respect.

Read how Martens tamps down our high expectations, after the jump…

Says Todd…

That all sounds nice, but we may as well give the award to the Jonas Brothers, no?

Not quite, but JoBros should not be taken lightly, either. Despite their Disney-connections and participation in “Camp Rock” shenanigans, Disney has done a good of job of positioning the boys as the real deal. Additionally, the JoBros have managed to keep one foot in the teen pop world — check the upcoming Disney Channel series “J.O.N.A.S.” — while still getting big boy gigs such as performing on the MTV Video Music Awards, not to mention the Grammys.

Finally, the kids surely scored some goodwill amidst Recording Academy voters when they gifted about $75,000 to the recently-opened Grammy Museum. While that won’t buy the band the award, it further illustrates that they mean business when it comes to scoring a Grammy.*

If anything hurts them, it’s the fact that they were also superstars in 2007, and should have been nominated for this award last year. Additionally, Grammy voters may opt to bestow the prize upon an artist that the world takes just a little more seriously. As big as the JoBros are, there’s a question of career staying power from anyone coming from the teen pop world, and Adele, Duffy and Sullivan are all safer long-term bets.

Read the rest, here.

* [Let it be noted that on top of that donation, the Boys are also going on two events which benefit the Grammy/NARAS foundation Musicares: the Ryman show and an upcoming Neil Diamond "Person of the Year" recognition event. Never underestimate a savvy team's ability to campaign!!!]

Sigh. Well, fine. I know it was a coup just to get nominated.

I also know it is no secret that NARAS is not known for its daring choices, hence the ridicule the Grammys often receive from some pop culture watchers.  In this category, the Academy will likely get some dissing whichever direction it takes – in picking the Boys or one of the several retro-flavored (debatable in some cases), female, R&B, other choices they seem more likely to go with (mainly “other” because this is a JB blog, as they are all obviously excellent artists!).  Especially if they go with a British one, since that will feel all too familiar.

For me – as someone who has been bored with the music industry for almost a decade, was always pretty nonplussed by pop music to begin with, and of course is a Jonas superfan – I logically think the Boys deserve a lot more credit than they are getting, here. To wit, I repeat..

Disney has done a good of job of positioning the boys as the real deal…

Which is Martens’ nice way of tiptoeing around having to say the band might actually be “the real deal” in reality.  Grrrr.  Perhaps unjust disregard is common in the pop world, and I’ve just never noticed it because I don’t usually pay close attention to pop artists (or find very many to be as worthwhile as the brothers), but it seems pretty unfair.  I certainly think they measure up.  They may have room to grow and develop…but isn’t that the whole point and potential of a “Best New Artist”?

Anyway. Whatever, Critics: Keep bringing it on – your reluctance can be nothing but good exercise for the Jonas funk muscle.

But come on, Academy:

Can’t you take a chance on the Jonases?!?!

So…what do you say, Revelers?  How do you really think the Boys stack up to the supposed Grammy “requirements” and potential for career longevity?

The requirements are described (on Wikipedia, grain of salt) as follows: For a new artist who releases, during the Eligibility Year, the first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist. Note that this is not necessarily the first album released by an artist.

And – What would be a bigger upset…a Jonas win or a Jonas loss at the Grammys?

I think they have a great chance of winning over Adele and the others. I think handing someone a Grammy for a promising song or two is not how they do it. I don’t think the Jonas Brothers could have won last year. This is their year IMO.

So the concert for Neil Diamond won’t be televised in any way? It does not sound like it.

  3. on January 29, 2009 at 2:12 pm coolmom823

I’m getting kind of tired of having to defend the guys music to self-proclaimed “experts” who insist on denying their legitimacy due to their Mouse King lineage. I’ve commented on lots of newspapers, magazines, blogs, and Lord knows I’ve voiced my opinion here time and again. Frankly, I think it’s time for us to take a cue from JB themselves in re the naysayers. By that I mean, we should just ignore them, and continue to be true to their music. JB brought me out of a 17-year-pop-music-slump. I simply couldn’t relate to pop music anymore, that is, until I heard and watched the Jonas Brothers. I’m not alone, there are many here on this blog with similar stories, and many, many more beyond the confines of our happy salon. Why should I care what some creep at the LA Times and even the voting contingent of the NARAS thinks? Do they decide what makes the cut for my music collection? Nope. If JB does not have “career longevity” (which I am completely certain is untrue) then it will be because somebody (not me) didn’t know a great thing when it was right in front of them. If JB gives up making music (which I am completely certain won’t happen) then I’ll just continue playing the music with which they have already gifted me. I’m enjoying the music far too much to stop now.

Win or Lose Doesn’t Matter to Me. Nothing Shakes Us. Nothing Breaks Us. Nothing Stops Us Loving JB.

  4. on January 29, 2009 at 2:40 pm Mae

This writer makes very valid points and I agree with most of them.

I understand people’s hesitation towards the boys because of their Disney status. I brushed them off for over a year just because of that and I still brush off other Disney acts. You can’t blame people for this because most Disney acts are incredibly manufactured. JB is obviously not but that is very unusual for Disney acts. It’s hard for a lot of people to make that distinction.

I mentioned this at the end of another post but I’m not sure if all of you read it. Although I enjoy the boys music the most out of all the nominees, I’m not sure I believe that they are the most talented of the bunch. I think when you compare the nominees lyrically, look the the arrangements, etc. the boys are facing extremely tough competition.

When I put my bias aside and listen to the records of all 5 nominees I’m not convinced JB is the best of the best. It is hard though because all the nominees create music that is so different from one another. I think any of the nominees would be 100% deserving of the award.

I think the biggest upset would be Lady Antebellum winning the award. They have been pretty much ignored in commentary regarding predictions.

  5. on January 29, 2009 at 2:57 pm mememoi

That’s interesting, Mae. I think it’s good to be realistic about the field and all, too.

From a personal perspective though, I think there is a weird bias toward the most straightforward R&B/soul type music as “better music”, I suppose because of the way it gets phrased, etc…which I find to be an incredibly dull perspective of the recording industry and criticism, AND the public taste. But that’s really just a statement of my own personal taste more than anything. :P

  6. on January 29, 2009 at 3:16 pm flamom

I think the clue everyone needs to get about the JB as opposed to say, the Cheetah Girls – is that they were on Columbia before Hollywood Records. They were a band before Disney. Everything they are NOW, they were BEFORE Disney. Virgins, pure, musicians, recording artists, etc etc.

  7. on January 29, 2009 at 3:18 pm merry27

A great post with some great points as usual by all SR-ers.

I have to agree with coolmom that they have really rekindles my love of pop music and I am so grateful for that.

I guess I can’t be objective like you Mae-I’m past that point.
But I don’t like Duffy at all.

I was really hoping that last year’s Amy Winehouse disaster would help push the boys to the front but after reading this article I’m not so sure now.

I don’t get the 2007 thing either, especially if it’s used as a reason to vote against them
If they are on the ballot and you think they deserve it then you should vote for them.

However, the Grammys like all awards shows always end up surprising me.

And knowing the boys if they don’t win it will just help them to grow and develop until the day they do win.

  8. on January 29, 2009 at 3:43 pm amandalovesjb

Everyone here knows how I feel about the boys. Of course, everyone is entitled to an opinion, but isn’t this a superfan blog where we can come and gush about the boys to our hearts’ content?

    Where’s the love?!

I personally think out of the 5 nominees they ARE the ‘best of the best’ and they ARE also ‘the most talented of the bunch.’

That’s my opinion. Pure and simple.

When they win, I will be proven right. :)

  9. on January 29, 2009 at 3:50 pm mollyanne

It’s nice to hear everyone’s views on the Grammy’s. I think that when you set aside just the music itself, the boys stand out above all the rest for everything else they do. They are continually trying to grow themselves and reach out to different people. The Nashville show proves this. They are also continually reaching out to their fans, which is not something that I think the other nominees are doing.

In honesty, coolmom said it for me so I won’t repeat it.

I think the boys deserve to win, and I hope they do. I’ll love them either way, and they’ll continue to do what they are doing either way.

    :)

  10. on January 29, 2009 at 3:57 pm tlatzotzontli

ah, great post and lots of thought-provoking comments!

I think the writer pinned down the mentality of Grammy voting quite well. Unfortunately, I do think most people find it very hard to look past JB’s Disney affiliation. Adele and Duffy are just more respected because they have a more visible (not sure if that’s the word that I’m looking for) edge, I guess.

I would really love it if the guys win, but I don’t want to get my hopes up to high. I’m crossing my fingers for them. But like coolmom said, if they win, GREAT! If they don’t, well bummer but I will still support them. If people buy CDs based on just the hype of winning a Grammy (or decide not to buy a CD because it didn’t win), then that’s kind of sad and just following the crowd.

The comment, “Disney has done a good of job of positioning the boys as the real deal” really irked me too. “Positioning” takes a way the credit of everything that flamom mentioned. JB was making music way before Disney, touring in a van, etc.

  11. on January 29, 2009 at 4:03 pm mollyanne

Ugh how on earth do you get critics to see that? It frustrates me so much that everyone just assumes that the boys started with and were manufactured by Disney. GAH! They ARE the real deal, they’re not just positioned as the real deal.

    Ninja.

  12. on January 29, 2009 at 4:09 pm tlatzotzontli

There’s one simple solution to getting critics to see that JB was not manufactured by Disney….it’s called RESEARCH!

hahaha. Sorry, it just really annoys me that some journalists assume these things and don’t do their research. I freelance music reviews and features for a couple places and I always try to find as much as a can about bands.

But I’m sure critics would find some other way to bring them down even if they knew that they were a band before Disney. :(

  13. on January 29, 2009 at 4:22 pm mememoi

Heehee, Amanda – in my heart you know I am SO right there with you. I personally try to be objective for the purposes of discussion and not having my feelings hurt. LOL! But I ADORE them, so I am never REALLY very objective.

This is absolutely a place to gush and also – for me anyway – to worrywart about things like this, because they have an impact on the Boys’ goals – which I want them to see them attain!! I want to understand why some people who unfortunately matter have these stupid opinions about the Jonases. Urgh.

    So, SO ninja.

  14. on January 29, 2009 at 4:32 pm Mae

Research or not though, with most critics it is simply the fact that they are a part of the Disney machine.

And for the record, in case I wasn’t clear above, I wholeheartedly want the boys to win this Grammy :)

  15. on January 29, 2009 at 4:34 pm mollyanne

Yeah, mememoi, why do these people even matter again? Because I really don’t understand why their crummy old opinion deserves to be read by anyone.

I sound like a ten year old. My apologies.

  16. on January 29, 2009 at 4:42 pm mememoi

    I know you do, Mae!!

Oh. And can I rant some more? Why, yes I can…

Another thing I wish people would consider when judging this band – that the albums in question were chiefly written by a guy who was at the MAX for all the albums they have produced thus far – FIFTEEN YEARS OLD. Lots of the entries in the category are young and prodigious, but Nicholas is, for lack of a better phrase – hella young and hella prodigious.

Ever since It’s About Time, I have thought – on the best songs – the youth and autonomy of the guys writing the music was evident at the same time their big talent was obvious. Even if it negatively impacted the quality of lyric. I thought that was something that made it infinitely more intriguing and enjoyable. It also means it’s not going to be precisely like the pop stuff being done by uber-veteran pop writers and producers…it’s better because it’s a group of kids who were steeped in that kind of music, and also lots of BETTER music, LOL, taking all that they had been exposed to and making something much fresher and more genuine largely on their own.

I happen to think they kick serious butt in the genre they are in…they aren’t R&B/soul artists at this point, or country artists, and maybe it is out there to say, but I think there are different standards in different genres. To make a direct comparison is difficult. It is rather like comparing their pop-rock chord progressions to that hyper-over-complicated guitar noodling in some metal music (the way 11 year old boys on YouTube like to do). That’s just not what they do…

I am just yelling at anonymous Academy members who can’t hear me right now, BTW.

  17. on January 29, 2009 at 4:44 pm mollyanne

FYI: They boys are going to be on Barbara Walters’ Oscar Special February 22- 7pm on ABC!!

  18. on January 29, 2009 at 4:51 pm mollyanne

Lol Mememoi you definitely said it much better than my “I don’t care about some unimportant dude’s crummy opinion”. :)

  19. on January 29, 2009 at 4:51 pm mememoi

According to Jonas HQ, People is predicting them to lose the Grammy also because they are so far along into their career.

Why is it that everyone recognizes this now, when up until the nomination it was all “Whoa who are these guys who just appeared out of NOWHERE?!”

Well on the bright side, if they do lose, it will make it a lot easier to go back to making fun of the Grammys like everyone else does. ;)

  20. on January 29, 2009 at 4:52 pm mememoi

Oh, molly, but you put it so simply and directly, and that is good too. :)

  21. on January 29, 2009 at 4:58 pm mollyanne

Well thanks! Let’s face it, I’m sick and grumpy…..that’s the first thing that came to mind. :)

  22. on January 29, 2009 at 5:08 pm mememoi

FYI: Just for post-completeness, I posted the Grammy Best New Artist requirements above, which are as follows

“For a new artist who releases, during the Eligibility Year, the first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist. Note that this is not necessarily the first album released by an artist.”

    Hmmm.

(I still say they could take it, the way Whoopi Goldberg won an Oscar for “Ghost” because she should have won one the year before for “The Color Purple”. LOLs!)

    OK, laundry time.

  23. on January 29, 2009 at 5:14 pm mollyanne

I’m still wondering what they will perform at the Grammy’s….anybody have any ideas? I thought maybe the slow version of tonight with Nick on piano but I dunno.

  24. on January 29, 2009 at 5:15 pm mollyanne

Ok I’m not just wondering, I’m dying of curiosity. :)

  25. on January 29, 2009 at 5:35 pm cpaig

    Great conversation everyone!

I want them to win, obviously, and I think they are wonderful, unique, and not completely comfortable in any category – even pop (meaning they don’t fit comfortably).

I have checked out some of the other artists, and while I have become quite a fan of Adele, Duffy didn’t hold my attention (sorry). I have still not thoroughly checked out Lady Antebellum.

I am generally not a fan of talking heads, pundits, and critics. They are all full of hot air and biased in a way that is similar to “high art” “low art” which is a bunch of snobbery when you get down to it. I mean – it is even cliche to confront this snobbery directly … so… I don’t know where they are coming from.

I just like what I like, and love what I love – some newspaper man will not sway my opinion.

I only want them to win because I know they would love to win. And I want them to be happy.

  26. on January 29, 2009 at 5:39 pm flamom

Mae – you’re absolutely right. I spent the last two days listening to a lot of my old favorite songs and I listened to Motley Crue’s 1st CD which I used to love – we all know Nikki Sixx can’t write but OMG it is horrible and repetitive and unbearable.

I told my DH – Nick at THIRTEEN (hell – at 11!) wrote more interesting songs than those, and with more words.

Plus – who uses words like reminisce in a pop song? Come on – they have to win just for that!

  27. on January 29, 2009 at 5:43 pm flamom

People dislike Disney acts because they are usually just solo pop singers who sing other people’s music (which 9 times out of 10 is just flat out awful). Or they are manufactured put-together groups of singers who sing other people’s music (again, mostly awful).

The Jonas Brothers were not manufactured by Disney nor were they converted from something into something else for Disney. They are what they are and now they are on HOllywood Records.

I think this is becoming obvious … but it will take time for the general public to “get it.” My DH and I discuss it all the time and we see a LOT of progress being made.

  28. on January 29, 2009 at 5:54 pm amandalovesjb

OT: Check out Ryan Liestman’s ‘other’ band – The Rule. Here’s the MySpace link. I like it!

  29. on January 29, 2009 at 5:56 pm flamom

Makes ya think … what other “real groups” HAVE been on Disney’s Hollywood Records? Like groups that sing and play instruments …

  30. on January 29, 2009 at 6:20 pm mememoi

Flamom, here’s an artist listing along with a Hollywood Record label description.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollywood_Records

Definitely a somewhat more complex label endeavor than the public perception – who I guess would see it more as the label that currently has Hayden Panettiere signed on. Oof. LOL.

  31. on January 29, 2009 at 6:23 pm mememoi

Also interesting is the whole of Disney Music Group which also includes a country label and an indie label.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disney_Music_Group

  32. on January 29, 2009 at 6:56 pm mememoi

    OH!

And don’t forget to enter this Grammy-trip contest lots everybody:
    http://www.enewssweepstakes.com/

So whatever happens, you can be there and try to find the Jonas of your choice and then give him a squeeze either of congratulations or condolences!!! LOL. It really oughtta be a Reveler.

(BTW you have to be over 21 to win this, and the code word is “music”.)

  33. on January 29, 2009 at 7:59 pm flamom

what a list LOL. I think the “ex” Hollywood acts are more unexpected. I told my DH Stryper was on there for 12 years (he used to like them! ha!) and he said “I don’t know what to think about that!”

  34. on January 29, 2009 at 8:06 pm flamom

This is painful: “The label’s first signing was the Party, a pop group composed of members of the 1989 revival of The Mickey Mouse Club.”

    ;)

  35. on January 29, 2009 at 8:34 pm mememoi

I don’t understand what are you trying to say, flamom?! That this isn’t total excellence?! -

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOXsAp6Ud7o&fmt=18

LOL. Oh man. Painful is right. And so much T&A for Disney! Haha.

I will admit, I was – at 10 – a total fan of MMC. I had a crush on Damon and everything and was more excited to see him, et al, at the ‘89 Macy’s Day Parade than I could ever have been for the NKOTB who were also there (and who I deeply despised at the time). But I can honestly say by some miracle I was never interested in their subsequent “musical act”. Phew. Just not my sort of thing. :P

  36. on January 29, 2009 at 9:05 pm flamom

I was too old for the revival of the MMC! :(

  37. on January 29, 2009 at 9:19 pm coolmom823

I’m sorry, but no MMC was ever as great as the original one with Annette, Cubby and Darlene!

  38. on January 29, 2009 at 10:07 pm Jan

My guess is that Adele may win it since she is nominated for 5 Grammys, anyways. I think they will hand her Best New Artist just for that fact. I’m just thrilled that the boys were nominated. It was a long time before the Beatles were recognized by the Grammys. Yes, I’m that old that I can remember when the Beatles were starting out. I remember being furious that they didn’t win Best New Artist (if they were even nominated).
As for Disney, they really do seem to be pushing any person who has ever appeared in a Disney show or movie to put out a video, CD, etc. I saw Alyson Stoner is doing one for “Space Buddies”; Mitchell Musso has one out (I haven’t paid much attention to his). I’m sure it won’t be long before some of the other actors on “Sonny With a Chance” will be on a music video. Disney should just concentrate on the ones who really can sing.

  39. on January 29, 2009 at 10:24 pm mememoi

Coolmom, I loved the original MMC too! I have no idea where we saw the reruns, but we did, and we had some records around the house. I totally idolized Annette – her hair was dark and curly and short like mine and my mother always made the connection.

Jan – The Beatles actually did win Best New Artist in 1965!

I was kind of hoping Adele would take home one or two of her other nominations and leave this one for the boys. Sigh! Well, if she wins, I will not hold it against her. We’re hoping to get to see her when she comes to do an upcoming show in Philly…

  40. on January 29, 2009 at 10:30 pm Jan

The Beatles did win?! I don’t remember that at all. I must have gone to bed early that night!

  41. on January 29, 2009 at 10:30 pm ponedbyjb

Straight up… Grammy haters (none of you) = Ninja! I am not in the mood for these people and they can step off!

  42. on January 29, 2009 at 10:37 pm coolmom823

I just hope the guys don’t take it too hard if they don’t win. I will love them just the same, but I would hate to think of them being crushed over something that is ultimately so political and fickle. Awards are always double edged swords. Look at the Academy Awards! I could write an entire blog about the “We was robbed!!” moments I have suffered through with the Oscars. Not to mention the hugely talented actors that have never even been nominated, much less won.

  43. on January 29, 2009 at 10:40 pm flamom

Maybe I’m just naive, but I don’t think they will be crushed if they lose. I doubt very much they expect to win. They’re too modest for that. Plus I’m sure they believe that it is all in God’s hands and if it’s meant to be, it will happen, and if not, it won’t. I know they know what is really important and these little disappintments (and even big disappointments) along the way are a blessing in their own way too. I think that is how they would look at it – they trust God with this stuff IMO.

(I still think they will win though :) )

  44. on January 29, 2009 at 10:50 pm coolmom823

Good point, flamom. I’m sure their faith is a comfort to them when it comes to the uncertainty of these kinds of things.

  45. on January 29, 2009 at 11:02 pm mememoi

I agree and don’t think they will be crushed either! I am more worried about myself…I got totally bummed at the atrocious VMAs, as if THOSE mean ANYTHING. But then, that was like getting attacked and having salt poured in the wound, all it once. So “fun”! This will be much more respectable all around.

It’s somewhat comforting to read the winners of the past decades and see the assortment of awesome non-winners through the years.

  46. on January 29, 2009 at 11:22 pm Mae

That fact that Sisqó was nominated made me laugh. “The Thong Song” anybody?!

  47. on January 29, 2009 at 11:25 pm Mae

I also wanted to share this video:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hb0SQUVjUQ0

I haven’t seen a Band In A Bus episode yet whose quality is this good. Be sure to click ‘Watch in HD’. I hope they all surface like this.

Joe’s quest for the cricket is a riot.

  48. on January 30, 2009 at 12:02 am Mae

I think I am talking to myself tonight but that’s alright!

I was looking at some photos from JonasHQ. Check out this photo in the HQ view from their Jonas Press Day:

    http://jonashq.org/images/displayimage.php?album=1200&pos=10

How cute is it that Joe’s bracelet has a ‘JB’ charm on it?

  49. on January 30, 2009 at 12:43 am mememoi

Mae, you rule…I have never seen that BIAB…it killed me…”Do you have a gun?”…oh, Joe. And also Nick’s “until we start the next album…so like a week.” Hehe.

And I love that Joe has the OLD JB logo…that is so sweet.

I also totally forgot who Sisqo was. I am not sure I can thank you for reminding me on that one. ;)

  50. on January 30, 2009 at 1:01 am ponedbyjb

    Mae,
Thanks for the goodies… can WE get bracelets like that?? ;)
RE: Sisquo… The thong song is a hair brush hit around here… :P Some songs just have to be sung into a hair brush.

  51. on January 30, 2009 at 1:07 am ponedbyjb

Why have I never seen that BIAB before… it is not even in my phone… it pretty much made my night! Thanks Mae. :)

  52. on January 30, 2009 at 1:13 am Mae

mememoi, the gun comment actually had me laughing out loud. I think my favorite bit was Joe’s “Stupid Cricket!” Oh the irritation!

It is really sweet that Joe wears a JB logo everyday…and a vintage one at that! I think it is actually quite telling.

And your welcome K! I wasn’t sure if it was a new one or not as I haven’t had the patience to sit through all the grainy one’s currently up on YouTube.

  53. on January 30, 2009 at 1:33 am amandalovesjb

You ladies will get a kick out of this: I have actually had the ‘honor’ of seeing Sisqo live in concert!

He was one of the opening acts for the Backstreet Boys when we saw them here in Boise circa 2000(?) It was around the time that ‘The Thong Song’ was popular. I think the other opening act was SuperChick?

I remember Brody was about 7 years old, it was his first concert. We were on the floor about 10th row. They wouldn’t let Brody stand on his chair, and he couldn’t see over all the heads in front of us, so we stood and I held him for most of the concert (he’s a skinny little guy, but still!)

Good times good times. BSB was actually scheduled to play last November here, and I had tix, but they canceled when hardly any tix sold. Sad.

  54. on January 30, 2009 at 1:33 am flamom

I loved the Thong Song! So funny. Thong thong thong thong thong! And that silver hair. Yeah, that nom made me kind of crazy. LOL!

So many “celebrities” that were “hot” in 2006 are not even in the public eye now.

    Perspective. :)

Those VMAs made me SO FURIOUS – I still am furious when I think about it. I just can’t STAND for their morals to be attacked in any way. That is (like I always say) my #1 biggest admiration of them, and their strength and faithfulness in not breaking down. It makes me trust them. Therefore I can feel all the other crazy feelings I feel for them … but without that first thing, it would not be like this for me.

  55. on January 30, 2009 at 1:35 am flamom

Mae – thank you!!!!!! for posting that link! That is so cool, the charm. I have been working thru Jonas HQ photos recently but I missed that!

  56. on January 30, 2009 at 1:36 am coolmom823

That BIAB was a treat. Joe was hilarious about that cricket, he was like the guy in the Caine Mutiny, talking about the strawberries, lol!

  57. on January 30, 2009 at 1:42 am ponedbyjb

Oh for real…. this will be the third time I am trying to post this…
Hey friends… look what I found… The video quality is poor but the audio is great!! *Swoon*

  58. on January 30, 2009 at 1:48 am ponedbyjb

Friends… I have tried to post a comment 4 times now with an amazing youtube link that you all need to see!!! GRRRRRR. If you watch the BIAB episode on the side bar there is a link that says Jonas Brothers Free Fallin’ cover… please watch it. The video is poor, but the audio is pretty amazing!! *Swoon*

  59. on January 30, 2009 at 1:50 am tlatzotzontli

Oooh. I hope more BIAB episodes of that quality pop up. I’ve tried watching the poor quality ones, but end up getting really frustrated. Thanks Mae…(—p.s. Are you getting excited for sxsw?) :)

Amanda, I have you beat….I saw Sisqo from second row when he opened for BSB. I remember shaking my head and laughing a lot during his performance. haha.

  60. on January 30, 2009 at 2:36 am Trish

I apparently missed a block of time in the last decade because I have no clue who Sisqo is.

For that matter, I have no idea who Adele, Duffy, or Lady Antebellum are either. I guess I don’t get out much!

I’m really irritated by that article, even though I’ve known all along I shouldn’t get my hopes up. It’s hard not to though because I feel like they deserve every award under the sun.

They have worked their tails off, given up precious years of their childhood, and toiled night and day to get to where they are and to still be called a ‘manufactured Disney band’ pisses me off.

But when it comes down to it, I think we will be the ones more disappointed if they don’t win. The Boys will be in awe just to be there!

So looks like February will be super exciting! Here’s a list I prepared:

Feb 4 – Katie Couric special
    Feb 8 – Grammys!
    Feb 14 – possible SNL
Feb 16 – BB Good/3D Sneak Peak Disney Channel
    Feb 22 – Barbara Walters
    Feb 24 – 3D Soundtrack
    Feb 27 – 3D Movie!!!!

Am I forgetting anything?! Hurry up February! WOOT!

  61. on January 30, 2009 at 7:07 am merry27

    hee hee
from sisqo to the Caine Mutiny. Love SR so much.

that BIAB is adorable. thx Mae.
I am happy to watch them grow and mature as people and artists but if I could freeze time for them that would be it.

one good thing about the grammys-they will be performing along with some of their idols including Paul McCartney and U2 so that will surely be thrilling for them.

And TI. I love that MTV TRL where Joe gets to interview him.

    Great list Trish
    also 2/10 moviefone comment thing
    2/16 possible Regis and Kelly

  65. on January 30, 2009 at 8:20 am flamom

ew and I found another one who hates them (and even wished Nick would lose a foot so they would break up) but he thinks they will take it.

I’m not posting the link. Shame on him and I wish him a very bad day today!!!!

  66. on January 30, 2009 at 8:30 am ponedbyjb

Wow the last person you mentioned should be punished flamom!!

I want to see Joe interview TI… I will have to try and find it…

  67. on January 30, 2009 at 8:44 am merry27

thanks flamom for finding all of those.

The last one is sick. Who could wish that on anyone much less NJ?

K- it was during the week in August when they were on TRL everyday (almost) and Joe seems so in awe of TI-it’s very cute.

  68. on January 30, 2009 at 8:51 am ponedbyjb

thanks merry! BTW, I really am going to write you back! I am sorry!

I have tried to look for their trl interviews from that week and I cannot find them, but I will look again..

  69. on January 30, 2009 at 8:53 am merry27

K do not worry… but never talk sports with me again…I never know when to stop :)

  71. on January 30, 2009 at 9:43 am mollyanne

Hi everybody! I missed another party so it seems. :( I passed out early again last night. I have no voice today from my cough fest yesterday. BOOOOOO. I can’t wait to watch these vids when I get home for lunch. What a day brightener. Thanks everybody!

RE: Sisqo. LOL. Oh man he was an opener for Nsync back in the day- I think it was 2000. I thought he would be there when I went to see that show but Pink opened instead. Thank goodness. She was much better. Although I didn’t really care. I just wanted Nsync to get onstage. :)

  72. on January 30, 2009 at 9:53 am amandalovesjb

LOL Mollyanne…to tell you the honest truth, when I saw NSync in Portland I think 2001? I cannot even remember who the opening acts were…when NSync came onstage I just cried and cried and cried…kind of like what Kayla does now when JB comes on stage!! (and me too) It is just so emotional when you finally see them!! lol

  73. on January 30, 2009 at 10:06 am mollyanne

Oh Amanda. That was me. We waited outside in ridiculous temps all day just to get in. We were about halfway back and could barely see because everybody was standing on their chairs. I was screaming and singing so loud I could hardly hear them. LOL cut me some slack, I was 14. And we didn’t have access to them like we do to the boys so it was so special.

  74. on January 30, 2009 at 10:09 am mollyanne

Now that we have been blessed with the boys and their music and everything else that they have given us, all other boy bands I ever liked have been put to shame.

  75. on January 30, 2009 at 10:13 am mollyanne

Not that I’m categorizing our boys as a boy band….oh you know what I mean. :)

JB has renewed by love for music and they have gotten me so excited about checking out artists I normally wouldn’t. When I was younger I never watched tv if I was at home, I would always have music playing and either just be listening or reading a book. I didn’t listen to much music in college besides what was playing on the radio and at work (A&F- I hate that music and I swear I hear it in my dreams). Now I always have music playing again (mostly the boys but lots of others too) and I am so enjoying checking out all of these artists that the boys have recommended.

  76. on January 30, 2009 at 10:24 am ponedbyjb

Okay all… running to work… everyone have a fantastic day!! Merry, if that’s the case we are going to talk sports all the time!! :) I never have anyone to chat with where sports are concerned!

  77. on January 30, 2009 at 12:03 pm Tiffany

Whatever happened with their song with Timbaland?
You would think more people would take them seriously when they work with someone like him….

  78. on January 30, 2009 at 12:35 pm mollyanne

Oh yeah Tiffany! I thought that was supposed to be getting released soon. Maybe when people hear it….hopefully it will get publicity.

  79. on January 30, 2009 at 12:57 pm Elisa

I took a day off the computer yesterday (!) and missed a whole lot, obviously! Great conversation. I don’t have much to add to what you’ve already said (“Disney has done a good of job of positioning the boys as the real deal” – Argh.) But here’s my honest and entirely objective opinion: the Boys deserve to win, and I reaaally hope that they will. They are incredibly talented and ALBL is the best album ever. So maybe I’m a bit biased… But that is what I think! And even when I thought I hated them, it was their music that I couldn’t resist. No matter how much I wanted to say that they sucked, I had to face the fact that they’re awesome. So I accepted reality, bought JB and ALBL and became a huge fan. :) I don’t want to get my hopes up, and the nomination alone is awesome (I didn’t see it coming at all), but I would love to see the Boys’ smiles if they won it. Besides… “Grammy-winning artists, the Jonas Brothers” has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? ;) Not that “Grammy-nominated” sounds bad, either.

As for the other nominees, Duffy’s the only one I’m familiar with, and I don’t like her at all. I’ve heard the song “Mercy” about a million times too many… I’m so fed up with it. (Yet, after listening to all JB songs countless times, they never seem to get old… Hmm. What was that you said about staying power, Mr. Martens? ;) )

Oh, since BSB came up earlier, I have to say that I love them! I saw them in Helsinki last April and it was probably the best show I’ve ever been to. And, yes, I cried when they came on stage… I think it was because I have been a fan since I was like 10 and I just couldn’t believe that they were actually there. And I’m only admitting this now because you shared your NSync stories, Molly and Amanda. Lol!

This is officially the tweeniest comment I have ever written here. Ha.

  80. on January 30, 2009 at 12:58 pm Elisa

I believe that the song “Dumb” with Timbaland will be released on his new album, which will come out in… wait for it… February!

  81. on January 30, 2009 at 1:13 pm flamom

we never did solve the mystery of the Japanese song Infatuation. I really need to know about that song!

  82. on January 30, 2009 at 1:48 pm coolmom823

I have a question about something. I looked for the 3D soundtrack on Amazon and could only find the CD, there wasn’t anything on MP3 downloads. Isn’t the soundtrack going to be downloadable?

  83. on January 30, 2009 at 2:07 pm mollyanne

Oh ladies I just found something great. I was wandering around on Rolling Stone’s website and I was reading an article about cool apps for the iphone that will be in next months issue.

    http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2009/01/28/iphone-applications-of-the-future-what-apps-would-you-like-to-see/

There’s one about Nick and I love it. :) I am all for it.

  84. on January 30, 2009 at 2:36 pm coolmom823

LOL molly! We totally need to know when Team Jailbait has to disband!!!

  85. on January 30, 2009 at 2:45 pm mollyanne

Awww I don’t ever want to see the end of Team Jailbait. We’ll still be team jailbait long after Nick turns 18.

I would totally buy that app though. :) I think it’s cute that they mentioned it in the article. Oh RS has earned major points in my book this last year.

  86. on January 30, 2009 at 3:08 pm Elisa

Lol! RS really loves the Boys, especially Nick… Maybe I should subscripe. ;)

We should get a shirt that says “Team Jailbait” in the front and “… until September 16th 2010″ in the back.

  87. on January 30, 2009 at 3:08 pm Elisa

    Haha, “subscribe”. :)

  88. on January 30, 2009 at 3:13 pm mollyanne

LOL Elisa I love it! What a fabulous idea. :)

  89. on January 30, 2009 at 3:43 pm Elisa

Just I was feeling a little bit guilty about thinking “Oh man, they’re still on?” when I read the CB article on JJJ I read this comment:

    jorendafan4ever:

I HATE HER TO DEATH!!!!!!!!!!! SCREW HER SHE IS UGLY AND ANNOYING I HATE U CAMILLA BELLE

BRENDA AND JOE ARE MEANT TO BE BACK OFF FUGLY CAMILLA
THANX A LOT BYOTCH FOR STEALING JOE AWAY FROM TAYLOR AND BRENDA I HATE U CAMILLA BELLE JORENDA FORLIFE JOE AND BRENDA FAN FOREVER

    I guess I’m not that bad… :)

Um… Who’s Brenda? Brenda Strong? Lol.

  90. on January 30, 2009 at 4:00 pm mollyanne

I’ll say it again….where are these girls’ parents?!

  91. on January 30, 2009 at 4:11 pm Elisa

I know… And are they really serious? I can’t imagine anyone seriously saying things like that.

On to happier things… Did you see this on NJO?

    http://www.etonline.com/news/2009/01/70243/index.html

Soo… How many days before Nick becomes legal? ;) Lol.

I love it how he gets embarrassed when Kevin says that Nick’s an inspiration to them. I’m the same way… I’m really bad at accepting compliments! :)

Captain is awfully quiet. Wish we had the audio of the performance, it looks like a lot of fun!

  92. on January 30, 2009 at 4:22 pm mollyanne

I haven’t watched the vid yet Elisa but I will when I get home! They looked good I think. Love Kevin’s jacket and Nick’s. Joe got awfully dressed up for the occasion. I love him in that dark purple color.

  93. on January 30, 2009 at 4:23 pm mollyanne

That was supposed to be Nick’s shirt. I have no idea where the word shirt went.

  94. on January 30, 2009 at 4:26 pm Trish

Love the shirt idea! LOL! :)

Yes, Team Jailbait will always be, simply because we will be reminded of it everytime we drool over pics taken well before they turned legal age!

OMG @ those girls. Yikes. Reality check, aisle 1….LOL!! And yep, that would be Brenda Song, although I have no idea where those rumours started.

  95. on January 30, 2009 at 4:31 pm Elisa

    Oh, right, you’re at work Molls? I didn’t realize that… It’s 10.30 pm here. :)

  96. on January 30, 2009 at 4:34 pm Elisa

Lol, I thought that it was Brenda STrong! Haha. :P

  97. on January 30, 2009 at 4:39 pm mollyanne

Ugh yes for another hour and a half. Friday afternoons go sooooo slow. :(

  98. on January 30, 2009 at 4:45 pm Elisa

Hang in there! Maybe this will help…

    ;)

  99. on January 30, 2009 at 4:48 pm mememoi

Hi, gals – yay my week is over!

Molly – I think Joe was dressed and ready to speed off to that movie premiere afterwards…cuuute.

I need to go on a moratorium of reading comments on sites like JJJ again. It gives me a headache. LOL.

    :)

  100. on January 30, 2009 at 4:51 pm Elisa

I honestly don’t know why I read them… Mostly they just make me angry. But some are just so ridiculous that you can’t help but laugh. :P

  101. on January 30, 2009 at 4:54 pm mollyanne

Yay mememoi! I wish mine was.

Ooooooooh the movie premiere. I get it. How did he manage to get in there without getting his picture taken? They’re getting really good at being sneaky!

  102. on January 30, 2009 at 5:00 pm mollyanne

Oh Elisa, that picture never gets old. Thanks. :)

  103. on January 30, 2009 at 5:01 pm mollyanne

Wait but I haven’t looked at oceanup or JJJ today. I’m guessing that if he went to that premiere, those boards are going crazy. Am I right?

  104. on January 30, 2009 at 5:16 pm mememoi

I haven’t looked at Oceanup, but I thought the JJJ response was relatively calm, considering…

  105. on January 30, 2009 at 5:17 pm Elisa

Well, Molly, that crazy comment I posted above was from the JJJ post that mentioned Joe being at the premiere… So, yeah. :)

  106. on January 30, 2009 at 5:20 pm Elisa

    Damn, I can’t get a link to work…

Have you seen the YT video called “Xavier Singing One Camp Rock Song”? It is beyond adorable!

  107. on January 30, 2009 at 5:26 pm mollyanne

Oh gotcha. Took me a second to put two and two together. Lol.

Relatively calm huh? That’s a surprise. Maybe because there is no proof yet and they are all still in denial. :)

  108. on January 30, 2009 at 6:03 pm mememoi

LOL, maybe, Molly…Jonas HQ worked pretty hard to confirm the rumor before posting on it, she is very diligent about that. So I am sure various forums are in meltdown. But aren’t they always? *shrug!*

Elisa – that video was unbelievably ADORABLE!!!!

  109. on January 30, 2009 at 6:41 pm mollyanne

Ok I finally got home to watch the Band in a Bus thing that Mae posted. I was rolling. Oh Joe you are such a DORK. I loved it. :)

  110. on January 30, 2009 at 6:59 pm flamom

Brenda Song (not Strong) is on the Suite Life on the Disney Channel. She’s older than Joe. What involvement have they had? I don’t think anything romantic. ???

  111. on January 30, 2009 at 7:02 pm merry27

Elisa that Xavier video is precious!

One night I was web surfing and I found a Camilla Belle fansite.
It’s funny but her fans are not happy at the thought of her dating Joe.

I really like Jonas HQ more and more. I like that she takes the time to confirm everything before posting.

  112. on January 30, 2009 at 7:03 pm merry27

There is a really great picture of Joe and Brenda in an elevator with Moises Arias and Joe is kind of checking her out. I’ll try to find it.

  113. on January 30, 2009 at 7:07 pm mollyanne

I really like JonasHQ too. There’s so much information there but she’s very good about fact checking, which we appreciate. :)

  114. on January 30, 2009 at 7:15 pm mememoi

Merry – I love that picture, haha.

Flamom – based on that video (where the photo comes from) of Joe hanging out with Disney people in a video that got out via one of the Cheetah Girls’ websites, and maybe other things (idk?) there was an unconfirmed rumor that Joe & Brenda were an item for a while in spring 2008 (around the Disney Channel Games).

They did stick together in the video, and seem to have some sort of chemistry, actually…but all that aside – because who knows?!?! – mainly, that video is ADORABLE because Joe looks nice in it and his manner is so different when he is without his brothers and surrounded by a group of really very hyper and shrieky girls. I love it. I can try to find it if you haven’t seen it and want to – he is really so cute there.

Poor Joe – he is like the gossip version of PigPen from Peanuts. Wherever he goes, he stirs up a dustcloud of chatter!!!

I am trying to love on my public Joe and leave private Joe alone…but it takes so much painful discipline. Ugh!

  115. on January 30, 2009 at 7:19 pm Elisa

Mememoi, if you could find that vid, it’d be awesome!

Lol, Flamom… I know who Brenda Song is, I just didn’t remember her name! Haha, I could have sworn it was Strong! :)

  116. on January 30, 2009 at 7:24 pm mollyanne

So true mememoi….it’s very hard. I need to try harder. :( Poor Joe he just can’t go anywhere can he.

  117. on January 30, 2009 at 7:27 pm mememoi

    Got it, Elisa!

He becomes visible after about a minute of stills & giggly, girly screechiness.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dKWGM8HMjM&fmt=18

Having once kinda been one of these girls, I can say that Joe is a brave, brave young man for passing an afternoon in this manner, all by himself (well, with Big Rob?) – adorable!

    [Thanks, Sabrina Bryan! LOL.]

  118. on January 30, 2009 at 7:32 pm flamom

OK … that OceanUp photo montage of Camilla and Joe is ridiculous. What movie is that from, for poor Camilla?

    And poor Joe too.

Camilla is gorgeous, hot, smokin’, etc. Wowee. I have not been impressed with her talking LOL but her looks – oh yeah I’m impressed. My DH has new admiration for teenager Joe – I can’t believe a 22 year old woman is dating him either.

That short dress – those heels! Holy cow.

  119. on January 30, 2009 at 7:40 pm mememoi

Well, as a 29yo who lurves Joe, I can personally totally believe it, flamom. ;)

  120. on January 30, 2009 at 7:40 pm flamom

Check out Zac on Ocean Up! That is an image to remember!

  121. on January 30, 2009 at 7:41 pm flamom

Now I have Brenda Song to be jealous of, TOO? LOL!

well if they were together, what happened? and how is he dating so goshdarn much? and how did I not KNOW about this???!!!

  122. on January 30, 2009 at 7:42 pm flamom

PS She is older as well … lucky Joe …

  123. on January 30, 2009 at 7:44 pm coolmom823

Name a woman of most ages who wouldn’t want to date our Dreamboat Captain! Camilla is lucky, Brenda is lucky, whoever she is is lucky!!!

  124. on January 30, 2009 at 7:46 pm Elisa

    Thanks Mememoi!

Poor Joe. I’m glad Moises was there for some manly support! All that screaming… “Brenda!! Brenda!!”. Us girls can take it, but it’s different for guys. Lol. :)

Ahem… Would be it be wrong of me to say that Joe looked HOT in the vid?

And the beginning was actually kind of creepy. The music was scary… Now I just keep checking that there’s no one behind me. I’m such a baby! :P

  125. on January 30, 2009 at 8:03 pm mememoi

Heehee, flamom, jealous. And, eh. Kids always find a way to date each other…even hella busy ones, I figure. And they have probably found time to have a kabillion social experiences we can’t even begin to imagine.

Anyway, the Disney inner sanctum (and young Hollywood itself) seems like a pretty high school sort of environment to me. I think there are some real characters and stories going on there, all times! Like what is the deal with the Cody Linley guy?! LOL.

Elisa – Joe looked hot in that video. Completely, totally, naturally!

  126. on January 30, 2009 at 8:21 pm flamom

I like Joe like that – all regular, sweaty, messy, etc.

I heard Demi dated Cody Linley. I thought he was adorable on DWTS.

  127. on January 30, 2009 at 8:36 pm mollyanne

LOL flamom I’m 22 and I would certainly not that get in the way of dating Joe. In my dreams….

Anyway, yeah the whole Disney community seems to be in a world of its own, probably lots of drama. Lots of ‘who’s dating who’.

And I adored Cody on DWTS too….I will admit that I totally voted for him every week. *hangs head in shame*

  128. on January 30, 2009 at 8:37 pm mememoi

    I love that Joe, too.

Egh, I was getting a little gossip-mongery on Linley, there…I have just heard crazy rumors about his behavior. And some of the very manic clips I have seen of him seem to bear the rumors out. That is awful to say, sorry…but Hollywood is a messy place, right?

I am so glad for the Jonases they don’t seem to live in that madness full time, though I am sure they have witnessed their share.

  129. on January 30, 2009 at 8:39 pm mememoi

But I did see some of DWTS though and he was a peach on there!

  130. on January 30, 2009 at 8:47 pm flamom
