Ready or not, JONAS is coming to the Disney Channel in May!
The spy premise has been eradicated and replaced with one involving three famous musician brothers, their life, and yards of fetching blue plaid. Oh, and hi-jinks, must not forget the hi-jinks. We were given a preview during Disney’s Totally New Year. The clip features mostly Joe and Kevin, but you get a sense of the single camera filming style, as well as a taste of the show’s tone.

We are very very excited! It’s clear they have been working very hard and it looks like it is really paying off, and the producers seem to be making some smart choices that will work with Jonas strengths, play down any weaknesses, appeal to the Disney Channel demographic and, with any luck, capture the interest of some outside it in a positive way. So far, it is something of a relief from some misgivings we were having. We can’t wait to see more (advance clips of Camp Rock were more promising than we ultimately found the completed film, after all.) But if it goes the direction it seems to be going…it might just be a pretty safe project.
It reminds us more than a little (and don’t kill us) of The Monkees. I realize we have made this judgment after only 41 seconds of footage, but the gags, the girl stampede – a bit Monkees-esque. But, don’t think that is a bad thing. We completely LOVED The Monkees! And the inevitable comparisons might just work in the Jonas boys’ favor,especially considering the production advantages they will have.
There are a few obvious differences:
- 3 Lucas boys; 4 Monkees.
- The Monkees were adults sharing an apartment; the Lucases are in high school and live with their parents.
- The Monkees were not a successful band (on the show) and spend lots of time chasing after girls; the Lucases are a huge band and spend lots of time running away from girls.
- The Lucases have (magical?) firepoles!
At this stage in their career, the Jonases’ greatest strength beyond their music is their incredible natural charisma – so this is not a bad show format to emulate. And that show was so successful!! Maybe a better comparison than Flight of the Conchords? Be reminded of the simple, goofy brilliance of The Monkees below.

We are, however, still a little disappointed that none of the band will be involved in the show that we can see. Remember long ago when Garbo would pop up in the Boys’ videos? Dude, to tell you the truth – he was super awesome!
Maybe they will give the band some cameo roles as the show goes on!!

Me too! I have so, so, SO much Monkees on my iPod! I don’t even know what my favorite is….”Pleasant Valley Sunday” is up there.
The Monkees were my first concert, at the age of 6 (1985-6). I believe they were the half time show of a Temple Owls football game?
Anyway, Cpaig and I, and our oldest sister, watched that show so much as kids, and kept up the gags for years (ie. “drawing straws”).
I remember coming home from school to watch the Monkees! Loved that show!
I’m sure the boys will make JONAS even better.

I agree their show could be even better, jc…so long as they maintain creative control! It is probably an awful lot of trust to put in a 21, 19 and 16 year old group of guys but it seems to be true, they do the greatest things when left to follow their instincts.

I remember watching the Monkees and loving it. The theme song can still get stuck in my head. “Here we come, walking down the street…”
I have high hopes for JONAS. I also, like everyone else here, have serious concerns. I have little doubt that the show will further solidify them as the kings of the tween scene. However, I am grateful they have begun making the transition to mainstream as a band prior to this TV show. If they hadn’t, I think the ripple effect could impede that transtion. I hope their footing is firm enough for that not to happen.
Mememoi – I agree, if they have enough control, their natural charisma and instincts will shine through and they will be fine.
Anyone else have to drag themselves into work today? The parking lot of my entire office building has a grand total of 6 cars – including mine. My phone has not rung once and my I’ve received a grand total of 4 emails, all of which were from my boss. This is depressing.
I keep chanting to myself Sunday, Sunday, Sunday in attempt to get myself through the day. Speaking of which for all you ladies who will be visiting, it is currently 58 degrees out and will be in the low 60’s this weekend. It feels like spring!

sharpld, I agree with you re: the tween Kings, however I don’t think they are anywhere close to having a solid stance in terms of mainstream acceptance. As long as they are with Disney they will be scoffed at and dismissed by the vast majority. Even though the critics have been quite praising of the boys as of late, if the boys win the Grammy, I am sure the criticisms and comments from the public about how absurd it is will be ridiculous in number. It is crazy the number of people who truly think their fans are all under the age of 15. One of the friends that is coming to the show with me on Sunday is convinced we are going to look out of place surrounded by the 15 and younger crowd. She wants us to steal an 8 year old child to take with us so that people don’t look at us suspiciously.

Good points re: the acceptance of the vast majority. I just hope they don’t lose the ground they have gained.
These previews are darling and funny. I’m glad that the guys’ own unique humor/charisma is coming through. The heightend/wacky universe take should work very well for them. I stand by my belief that the one-camera format will work in their favor.
I too was a Monkees kid (Davy Jones was my first ever big heartthrob). I think they could actually do a lot worse than to be compared to them.
I am feeling better and better about the TV show. But I hear all of everyone’s concerns about their continued brand identification with the MOUSE. Time will tell.

Mae, hang in there-you are so close to it. And I noticed in San Diego there was a much wider variety of fans, more guys (with their gfs but still). A concert at your venue will skew towards the mature fan I would think.
I was trying to figure out how you young’uns watched the Monkees. I didn’t realize they had an 80’s revival.
We used to march around the playground, arms linked doing the theme song! But now I need to down load Pleasant Valley Sunday and Last Train to Clarksville. Still good songs.
And my favorite Brady Bunch episode was the Davy Jones one (Now the flip side!).
And I know Jonas will be good but I still hope it’s a one season thing. Maybe 12 perfect episodes?
Mae you are so right about the mass perception!! It confounds me.
Anyway, most people (even with very strong opinions about them) don’t really know that much about the Jonas Brothers, even as they become a household name.
And since they are so indelibly linked with Disney in most of the minds of those people anyway, I am not sure this could do that much more damage.
I have actually heard people say they thought they already had a series running on Disney, a la Hannah Montana, before they ever had albums or toured. So I don’t think details like the show should be a big negative revelation for anybody, as most people are just reacting to whatever vague things they perceive the Jonases as representing that they dislike. I find that’s often irrational and not all that much based in reality.
A writer on a blog I read regularly made a crack about them not being “cool” anymore in 6 months and I had to respond that I really didn’t think they are generally accepted as “cool” now. Which is fine by me. “Cool” is overrated.
Ugh I’m at work today too…3 emails, one phone call, and a messy stack of files on my desk that I can’t even see over.

mememoi, you are right about people already believing that the boys have a TV show. Actually the same friend that I mentioned above actually believed that they did. She told me she needed to watch an episode before Sunday to familiarize herself with them. She is also convinced Miley Cyrus will be the ‘Special Guest.’ She will be in for an experience Sunday for sure.
So just for fun and to depress myself, I google mapped directions from Indy to Nashville to see how long they think the drive is…289 miles in 4 hours and 23 minutes
it would probably be closer to 5…I can’t believe they are going to be that close to me and I’m not seeing them!
Mae I will be curious what your friend thinks of JB after Sunday. I’m suspecting even someone relatively uninitiated would be impressed at their musicianship, stage presence and general showmanship for such young performers.

I suddenly feel painfully aware of my young age… I only know one Monkees song, “Daydream Believer”. I like that one! My brother used to listen to it all the time when he was younger… He’s always had a…. well, unique taste in music. But I think that’s a good thing.

I really really like the JONAS preview! I actually have high hopes for the show. Although I know that it will make it even harder for me to convince my friends of the fact that the JB are SO MUCH more than “a Disney band”. And let me tell you, I’m already having a hard time making them believe that! I’m like, “Listen to their music!” and have written (long) lists of song recommendations, but have so far been unsuccesful in recruiting any new JB fans. Just on New Year’s Eve I made my best friend watch the WYLMITE video on my iPod – my sales pitch went something like “It’s the most beautiful music video ever” – but as soon as Nick did his “Oooooh yeah” thing (like only he can!), she gave me this you’ve-got-to-be-kidding-me look. Oh well, it was worth a shot! And she did say that it’s an “ok” song. Understatement of the century, I know, but I can work with that! Lol.
But yeah, as mememoi said, the damage is pretty much already done… If everyone thinks that the Boys have a show on DC anyway, why not have one?
And they do have the 3D movie coming up too (why can’t it be February already?), which will be all about their music, as well as the world tour and a new album (double squee!), so I think the balance is right. The main focus is their music and I hope it stays that way.

coolmom we used online ticketing via moviefone for the specific theater. But they kept adding more showtimes so we saw it at 9:30 in the morning. Not a great time for popcorn.
And they ended up extending it for a few weeks so I’m guessing that will happen with the JB 3d

Re: The 3D movie: I HAVE to get tickets to it… Any screening will do, I’ll be there at 6 am if I have to, just as long as I get to see it! The only possible days for me to see it are Friday (27th), Saturday and possibly Sunday morning. I’m going to ask for your advice on how to get the tickets later!

I’m really excited about the show, and really enjoy the recent preview. However, a part of me wishes that the Lucas Brothers was not a famous band trying to lead normal lives. I think that will bring a lot of negative reviews that will compare the show to Hannah Montana. With the guys’ input I know it will be so much better than HM, but it will be easier for people to scoff at without giving the show a chance. I think the silly humor could have still worked if the guys were in a band that was just starting out.
Do you think Disney ever considered putting the show on ABC? I wonder if it would attract the same amount of attention.
Coolmom – I don’t remember when those tickets went on sale…hmm…it felt fairly in advance. Probably mid-January for early February tickets.
I know, tlatz – it’s a big oops that the old premise got that far as to be previewed on the Disney Channel and everything. There were actually a ton of stills…and some of them were just so cute! The funniest part was that it was written that they were a band that still played a lot of like, state fairs and festivals, which they still basically were when they signed that contract.
They keep the programming pretty segregated one the various Disney Channels, it seems like…I don’t follow much of the ABC programming, except when the Jonas Brothers are on it, but it would have been really interesting if they had made that choice. But I guess they were always being developed more within the Disney Channel division. Hmmm…
Yeah, you’re right mememoi. Their affiliation/working relationship has always been more prominent with Disney Channel. One good thing about that (versus ABC) is that Disney Channel shows a lot of reruns….more chances to see the episodes over and over!

We just got back from seeing Marley & Me and in the theater is a huge, I mean HUGE, stand up poster for the JB 3D movie! The poster itself is 3D (it’s the much-hated poster where they are getting off the plane). Cant’ wait till 2/27!
Marley & Me, for those of you who haven’t seen it, is a blubber-fest. At least for us it was since we have a yellow lab who is way worse than Marley. My 11 year old was crying openly at the end and you could hear everyone in the theater sniffling. A real pick-me-upper!! We were laughing at so much of it since we could relate so well to it.
Oh man, sometimes, there’s just nothing like a blubberfest, right?
Cpaig told me about the standee when she went to the movies yesterday…she said it was placed in a secure location, presumably to keep it safe from crazed fans and hooligan haters alike.
BTW – I LOVE the prank call hit list. *evil chuckles* Our slumber party is going to be brilliant.

I am soooo depressed about not going to the concert Sunday. I am also 4 1/2 hours away Molly, so I guess we can just sulk here together. We are just waking up in Nashville. I can’t believe the show is tomorrow! The gaylord is simply beautiful. The kids love it. The Christmas lights r fantastic 2. The place has that Disney feel.

Merry I didn’t know you had been so close! Wow. The last time I passed by their hotel (which they weren’t staying in at the time) I admit to feeling a little awe…idk what I would do if I knew they were there. Eep. This makes me feel so lame, but it is the sad truth!

Long story short since Elizabeth has been home from the hospital we have been in CT for the entire holiday. I sort of felt like we should go to NY once to say hi and bye to visiting family. So we piled into my mini(I never drive either but knew there would be no traffic) and I decided to drive across town on 59th st and we pulled across the street from their hotel. We could see about 30 girls and some black suvs. It was around 11:00. and I said to Elizabeth, “What do you think?” and we both sort of were undecided because it was freezing cold and of course she is very shy. So we just pulled away.
AND then we saw on TJ that they came out at 11:30 and shook hands and took pictures.
Did I say long story short??
It was a bit frustrating but I’m trying to be zen about it.
Although it would have been the most awesome thing ever it just wasn’t meant to be. If she was totally healthy it might have happened. But someday…….
Rumored guests:Tim McGraw and Faith Hill-which kind of makes sense since we know their girls are big fans.

So last night I did a ‘ticket swap’. I originally purchased 2 tickets for the show. And after talking with friends, there was more of an interest to really want to go than I thought there would be. I really thought I would be dragging somebody, and maybe even having to pay for their ticket. So even though my friends know very little about them, they want to go. So I ended up really wanting 4 tickets. So I met up with a guy who I am sure was a ticket broker and exchanged my 2 front Balcony seats for 4 more rear/side Balcony seats for a really decent deal (not to much over face for the additional tickets), although now I am quite positive he is going to turn around and sell my original tickets for an arm and a leg per ticket. Oh well. If he thinks he can re-sell them by tomorrow, more power to him. I’m kind hoping to see him trying to pimp the tickets outside the venue tomorrow or something.

Don’t be embarrassed by the story – that is awesome to come so close! I have a story that is about as bad. In December 2006, before we really had a clue who they were….we were in the EXACT SAME PLACE as them – The Atlanta Festival of Trees. I make handmade candles and was there stocking my candles in their gift shop. For all we know, my daughter and I could have bumped right into them and wouldn’t have even known! Amanda- I’ve made the trip from ID to CT a few times now, and its quite the adventure! There’s lots to see on the way, but Nebraska is a very long, very boring state.

Hello, Reverlers. Just got back from seeing Bolt. It was much better than I expected. I had to come home and hug my dog and cat.

This concert meet-up sounds so cool though! I’ve been to Austin twice (and will actually be going again in March for a music festival), it is a great city. I’m not familiar with the bigger venues where the guys would have a show, but the downtown area is really fun.

My college radio station sponsored the trip twice in the past. Now that I’ve graduated I have to pay for everything, but one of my friends and I pledged last year that we would attend again, not matter what. It’s such an overdose of music. I’d recommend anyone going if given the chance.

I run a teeny-tiny, tiny, tiny film festival at my job, and my company does the odd film production as well, so one of my co-workers and I are always trying to convince our boss it would be great research/professional development/networking, for us to go to the film focused part. My co-worker/buddy has ulterior motives, though, as he is a pretty butt-kickin’ singer-songwriter himself and wants to dive into that scene, of course. And I want to tag along!
We have obviously not succeeded in convincing the boss lady. Sigh. She doesn’t disagree, we are just a miniscule company with a tight budget. Boo!!

mememoi: It is hard for small companies to pay for the trip, but keep trying. SXSW has been one of my life’s highlights. hehe. I’ve never attended the film festival portion, but I’m sure that is just as great. I hear that a lot of actors can be seen walking around downtown. The first year that I went, my friend and I were watching the Flaming Lips perform, I look to my side and see Elijah Wood standing next to us! We’re not huge fans of his, so we didn’t say anything, but it was just one of those ‘woahhh!’ moments.
ooooooooh Texas is super far but my cousin is getting married in June and they are moving to Houston!!!!! So that may just be a possibility for me!! Woot!!!!!

Big news re show 2morrow – special guests may incl miley but as far as there being wellknown & legit country stars with them, the ryman emps say “u won’t b disappointed!” they never heard of demi so I don’t know about her.
Doors may open b4 5 due 2 obvious mania (LOL). Lots of merch (“everything”) to b available & YES there will be a hatch print!!!!!!!! But only 100-150 are usually printed – however they might print more this time (see above reason).
Lots of intense security outside and in.
We went on a tour of the ryman today and I asked everyone questions! OMj it was amazing to see the stage and imago e our heroes in it… We also got to check out our seats. Emps recommend bringing coat to sit on since pews are hard; but how much sitting is anyone going to do. Place is super warm even today while empty so a tshirt will be fine!
Cameras should b ok. No meet & greet will happen for this show – I found this out from a contact who works for the mkting co.

We had an xcellent day – Nashville zoo, wildhorse saloon, walking around downtown Nashville, ryman tour, dinner at aquarium at opry mills. Exhausted!!!!! So xcited!!!!!

mememoi, that is so cool you run a film festival (no matter how small!). I would love to be involved in something like that. I did volunteer for the Tribeca Film Festival this past year in exchange for a pass package and truly enjoyed myself. I’ve heard very good things about the film portion of the festival as well.
And actually, I work for an incredibly small company which is why I am so surprised I was offered the opportunity. I feel like the only reason my boss is sending me is because he knows we need someone there as we have clients who will be performing/in attendance and he is just plain tired of going. He’s gone for the past 10 years or so. He is also 61. And I think just over the scene.
