If You Were Hoping That Nick Jonas Would Take a Seat…In Child-Star Oblivion, We’ve Got Bad News [Awesome]

November 25, 2008 by mememoi

Nick Jonas & The Jonas Brothers

Holy moly, what a WEEK!!!  I am not sure I can add much of a spin to this amazing honor that Nick has just received from DETAILS magazine – placing #24 on their “Power 40” list – apart from “COOL!” and “CONGRATULATIONS!” to Nicholas.  It is much deserved.

The magazine’s thoughts on Nick, after the jump…

Nick Jonas is learning the Timberlake Corollary: The squealing tween throngs may claim to love every boy-bander equally, but when the bandmates go their solo ways there’s room for only one in the fans’ hearts. So while the chaste sibling trio from Wyckoff, New Jersey, may be on a serious roll—their third album, A Little Bit Longer, sold 525,000 copies its first week (outdone in 2008 only by Coldplay and Weezy), their multi-million-dollar Live Nation deal will keep them ducking Underoos in hockey arenas through the end of 2009, and their flick Camp Rock gave the Disney Channel hope for a High School Musical-esque franchise—it’s Nick who will be standing long after the purity rings have been chucked. It’s no secret that Columbia originally signed Nick on his own—and the brothers-cum-backup band were added later. Just ask Disney’s robot overlords, who saw fit to link, in a sexually nonthreatening way, of course, the youngest Jonas with the House of Mouse’s prize stablemates Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez. Or ask Elvis Costello, who called Nick “thoughtful and curious” in the introduction to a lengthy interview his acolyte conducted with him. If you were hoping that Nick Jonas would take a seat next to Hanson in child-star oblivion, we’ve got bad news: You’ll be buying your kids his merch for years.

Interesting take on it for any of us die-hard followers of Joe and Kevin (or Hanson) from the magazine that never fails to bring on a backhanded take of the Boys (they ushered the Great Purity Ring “Expose’” onto the national scene) but I am not going argue – the boy is indeed a force!  Read it in context of the full list here!

If it is possbile to die of joy for our Boys, I think I would be gone now. What a week! They so deserve it. And I believe with accolades they have been given of late, they have transcended the tween realm. This would be the third in the trifecta, right?

Congratulations, Nick! I look forward to buying your merchandise for years to come. It will be money well-spent.

    I know!!!

Now, only Joe lacks list recognition. Though I would urge him not to mourn that he’s not on any big magazine lists right now, and hold out a few decades for his future Best Director Oscar instead. :P

  3. on November 25, 2008 at 5:09 pm sharpld

I don’t think Joe will have too long to wait. As talented as he is, there will be many awards between now and that Best Director Oscar.

I will be watching the Oscars that night in the future, telling my grandchildren how I loved Joe and his brothers when they were teen pop stars and how I still love them for the grown men they became. WDT – never shake us!

  4. on November 25, 2008 at 5:16 pm coolmom

This is indeed cool for Nick. And well deserved, of course, he is a fantastically talented and truly admirable person.

But I really must take exception to Details tone in general and much of what they stand for. I will never forgive them for the purity ring-a-ding-ding, and their tone is, at best condescending. While the guys will naturally pursue solo projects and may well end up in completely solo main careers, they are FAMILY and music is integral to their family unit. They have been singing, playing and listening to music together their whole lives, and I can’t imagine that music made as brothers will not always have a place in their careers.

So sorry Details Magazine, if you were hoping that Joe Jonas and Kevin Jonas are going to take a seat next to Hanson in child star oblivion, WDT has got bad news for you: NONE of the Jonas Brothers are going anywhere but up!

    Interesting.

The bit that especially rubbed me the wrong way was the comparison to Justin Timberlake – “but when the bandmates go their solo ways there’s room for only one in the fans’ hearts.” This may be true for the typical boyband – but JB isn’t a typical boyband. It kinda baffles me that they are considered one simply because of the demographics of their fanbase and Disney. Not to mention the obvious fact that the dynamics of a family band are much different than those of any other band.

I’ve found that people don’t generally appreciate the Hanson/JB comparisons but I very much see them. I believe in 5 – 10 years that JB will still be performing as a group only to a much smaller, but no less devout, fan base as Hanson currently does. Hanson is still able to make a living in music by touring and self-releasing their material. I remember a quote Hanson used to always say when they were at the height of popularity when people would question their future as a band – they would say “we can’t break up, we are brothers.” I think JB has similar feelings. I really can’t see any of them attempting a solo career (although just watch them prove me wrong ; ). There was a quote on the inside flap of the new JB book that said “As brothers we always feel stronger together than apart, especially on stage” and I really believe this to be true. I really don’t think Nick would have succeed as a solo artist (but who knows, maybe he would have once he hit college age). He is an incredibly talented kid but talent doesn’t always make you succeed as an artist.

Congrats to Nick nevertheless! It’s always nice to see recognition of any of the boys.

  6. on November 25, 2008 at 5:40 pm mememoi

sharpld – I love that vision of the future Oscar telecast!

Mae – I agree with you very much. The JT mention is lame. I mean, I don’t think anyone necessarily ever expected any one BeeGee to go solo like a JT (or a Beyonce), even if they found time to do solo projects or collaborations with other artists on their own, you know? So, yeah, that was kinda ignorant. I agree that you can see how stranded they seem to feel without each other. I could see solo projects…but not anything “permanent”, per se. But who can tell the future?

And I think the Boys are very different from Hanson in a number of stylistic and career-y ways BUT I take the comparison as the best possible compliment. Because honestly they (and we as fans) should be so lucky to see them trace a similar path.

  7. on November 25, 2008 at 5:41 pm mememoi

Coolmom – well put (somehow I skipped over your comment before I entered mine)!!

  8. on November 25, 2008 at 6:00 pm sharpld

I don’t know if I see solo careers until they are ready to put the rock and roll life aside for awhile to have families and do that normal sort of stuff out of the spotlight. I believe it will be a mutual decision. They each have expressed interest in different career paths. I can’t imagine them ever giving up music or performing together, but I fully accept there may be a day when I am squeeing because Joe took time away from filmmaking and Kevin took time away from producing records and Nick takes time away from his political career to give us a flashback to the HOB show. I am looking forward to being a witness to the journey, wherever it takes them. As coolmom said, we know it will be up.

  9. on November 25, 2008 at 6:24 pm mememoi

Heehee…I can picture that so well…though security will be SO tight, what with the President jamming with his equally illustrious Bros. I hope we can all get in!

I am feeling similarly uber-romantic about their future these past couple of days. A huge part of what I love about these guys is the feeling of watching something big and deep happening before my eyes in a way I have never experienced before. Not so much the pop fame, but the growing up, their gradual self-discovery. The HOB show really reminded me so strongly of this…it is an intense feeling to have about people I don’t know but I feel entitled enough, as a member of the fan-family. :)

Oh and regarding whether they have yet transcended the tween realm, I am trying to be patient. I actually just had an email exchange with the two hosts of an NPR show called “Sound Opinions“. They consider themselves serious rock enthusiasts, and are longtime Chicago based rock critics. They did an episode on bubblegum music that was interesting, thoughtful, even respectful to a degree (they started with Ricky Nelson, who they felt became a great adult artist) but then – after using them to promote the episode – they gave the Boys totally short shrift. I am used to the hosts’ snobbery in general but this time it made me really mad!! (They mentioned the Naked Brothers Band as an example of good current bubblegum, which made me blow my top).

One of them gave me a standard response after I wrote them, and then his co-host also wrote me and said that, indeed, his colleague had a deep and irrational hatred of the Boys, that he himself loved about half of ALBL but was waiting for the next record to see whether or not he could get behind them with a full-throated endorsement. I bet he is not atypical of a lot of people (snobs!!! and usually resentful men) who are holding the keys at critical and mainstream radio programmer desks – that have a strong hand in establishing the popular opinion. I wish those people didn’t get to make these decisions, but there you have it. In any case – this year leading up to the next album will be really interesting to watch in terms of them establishing credibility with those people on the fence.

  10. on November 25, 2008 at 7:18 pm sharpld

Drat, mememoi! That stinks! I understand musical snobbery, but I think what these critics refuse to see is the potential. I will hold off on that rant. I will leave it at the time will come when it is right. I will be there when it happens.

I couldn’t have said any in better than you did in your second paragraph. Something about JB brings back that romantic spark and unjaded belief in the goodness of the world that I sometimes feared I would never get back. That is precious.

Pardon the mush. It is the Kevin Koma talking.

  11. on November 25, 2008 at 7:30 pm coolmom

Mememoi, you are always so hooked in to the popular and critical pulse—kudos to you for always keeping us abreast of that. I totally get what you are saying about the “critical powers that be” withholding approval due to some “irrational hatred” or snobbery or both. Resentful men is right. (Balls out nutzo eh? I never forget, you nailed it completely) I get so mad at this inability for people to let go of their prejudice against Disney, or Christians or whatevah’ and just LISTEN TO THE MUSIC AND LET IT WORK ON YOU!!!!!!!

But, however much people want to diss and dismiss them, JB is such a genuinely talented group of MUSICIANS (forget looks, marketing, exposure, media) that they cannot help but prevail. I am no youngster, and I have been around the block a few times, and I am also no stranger to this business we call show. I know the real deal when I spot it, and I spotted it when I saw these guys perform a concert for the first time. You can’t teach or manufacture the kind of passion and charisma that literally leaps from JB to their audience when they perform. And talent will win out, in the end!

  12. on November 25, 2008 at 10:07 pm flamom

The last part may be flattering to Nick, and I agree that he is a prodigy.

But that paragraph is incredibly insulting to Joe and Kevin. Nick has boatloads of talent, and more to spare – yes. But Joe and Kevin add crucial parts to the formula.

He was signed on his own but the brothers were added to make it better. And I can’t say that Nick will never do anything on his own – but he is not going to abandon his brothers. This is not ‘N’ Sync. This is a FAMILY and a religious decent value-laden family at that.

THe article is really far off the mark.

  13. on November 25, 2008 at 10:09 pm flamom

PS Nobody is “chucking” any purity rings. Those are a symbol for taking your body seriously and not abusing it. The Jonas guys are not going to give up on that principle.

And how insulting to say that Nick’s relationships with Miley and SG are engineered pairings. Feh!!!!!

  14. on November 25, 2008 at 10:15 pm flamom

I think Nick being compared to JT is right-on – I think of him that way too. The doing anything, creative thinking, future moving, genuis musical prodigy type. However, Joe and Kevin are NOT JC Chasez or Lance Bass. ANYONE could have filled the other ‘N’ Syncers’ shoes – but that is NOT the case for J & K. Joe has a serious gift for entertainment not to mention the best looks around, and a wonderful voice – Kevin is a great guitarist and writes great songs – and the 3 of them are a total package. THey help each other stay strong – this itself cannot be minimized.

I am a fan of Hanson – in general. I don’t know their music that much but I respect them SO much and like them. Back in the day I crushed on Taylor (too old for him too – HA!). Yes, they are still together, they are still around, they still make music, and they NEVER chucked their purity rings!! Six kids between them!

  15. on November 25, 2008 at 10:20 pm flamom

I’m insulted at “bubblegum” too. They make ROCK n ROLL. Real rock and roll songs. Just wait a few years – they will be even better, the music will be even better – and everyone will be older – 18, 21 and 23 – that alone will help.

NAKED BROTHERS????? Puh-leeze. Can’t dignify that comparison with a comment.

  16. on November 25, 2008 at 10:26 pm flamom

BTW speaking of Nick – I GOT MY DOGTAGS today. In a small envelope – 0.59 postage. How on earth. I sell 140 items a month from my eBay store and I have to use package rate – this package should cost at least $2-3. I don’t know how it got to me. Plus the tags are not even bubblewrapped!

The tags look very nice. They come in a plastic baggie with a little card thanking you from Nick and Bayer. I hope they stay silverplated for a long time! I hope my kids like them! (I hope they don’t have lead in them – you know everything has lead these days – ugh.)

  17. on November 25, 2008 at 10:33 pm mollyanne

Amen flamom. I can’t really add anything to that- I’d just be repeating what you said. Comparing the boys to Nsync is just silly. It’s completely different. The dynamic of the JB is so complex. Nothing about any of them can ever be replaced. And not just the three boys but also Mama and Papa J, Frankie, the band, and everyone else involved. It doesn’t just take one band member to keep the show going….it takes the entire Team Jonas.

18, 21, and 23? Oh My Jonas. I can only imagine them at those ages. SQUEEEEEEEE! Now if only I could figure out how to stay 22 while they age a couple of years……..hmmmm.

  18. on November 25, 2008 at 10:33 pm mollyanne

I got mine yesterday flamom! Woooooot!

  19. on November 25, 2008 at 10:39 pm mememoi

We got our dogtags as well! Totally cute.

I know, I told the radio/writer guys that, about the Nakeds being a joke, well that is mean…just that they are not exactly a…band worth noting on the same plane. The smarter of the two guys agreed with me 100%, anyway. (The other one should have all of his privileges as a journalist revoked, in my opinion. ;) )

I don’t have a problem with the “bubblegum” label, in general…mostly because it has been applied at various times to a wide, wide range of musicians, including the Beatles. And certainly it has been applied to some of the best music ever made. It is more a descriptive of the fanbase than the music itself – and it is an indicator of wild popularity and the creation of a movement, as well (which is why it does NOT apply to the Naked Brothers). I think it fits the Boys, they wear it well and will transcend it.

  20. on November 25, 2008 at 11:24 pm flamom

Did anyone see the pic of Joe in the Cinderella shirt (the metal band)? I loved it! I was a Cinderella fan – I guess I still am … we were supposed to see them this summer (2nd row seats!) but Tom Keifer ruptured his vocal cords – I don’t even know if he’s OK now. Tom lived in Cherry Hill, NJ (maybe he still does) – that is where I am from originally too.

I sent the pic right away to my DH and he said “LOL! Jersey boy!”

    How cute.

  21. on November 26, 2008 at 1:34 am mollyanne

Totally random: but the Fan Mail video is gone from their YouTube :( Before I could get it converted and downloaded onto my phone. I am so sad- that was their best video EVER.

  22. on November 26, 2008 at 1:44 am mollyanne

Watching JK right now. Boys, you have outdone yourselves. And all I’ve seen so far is the prank call. LOL.

  23. on November 26, 2008 at 2:00 am mollyanne

McBurglar- oh Joe. You slay me. That was classic.

  24. on November 26, 2008 at 2:06 am Barbara

Video Girl on JK! I love how they keep playing different songs!!

  25. on November 26, 2008 at 2:10 am flamom

OMJ girls!!!!!! I loved Kevin in that hat!!! It was some of the best hat wearing any Jonas Bro has done!

In fact his whole outfit (incl guitar) was VERY rock n roll – love it! Even my DH said “Kevin looks good playing his guitar” and that he likes his leather jacket. He likes a more serious kind of guitar player (like me). Great job Kevin!

Joe and all of them were SO funny and adorable and cute and fantastic. That was the best interview ever. OMG I can’t stand it.

Except for the part about moms liking them creeping them out. Hmmmm. I constantly wonder how weird they would think I am and that did NOT help!

  26. on November 26, 2008 at 2:11 am flamom

I love how they’re going thru the CD too. That’s great to get that kind of exposure. Did you all hear about GMA on Friday?

Also the game on Thurs starts at 4:25 so they should be on between 5:30/6. Which is perfect for me – we’ll be back home from my ILs by then. I want to SQUEEEEEEE in my own home!

  27. on November 26, 2008 at 2:12 am mollyanne

OH MY GOODNESS. I was squeeing like a fangirl the entire time. Full out tweenie.

Agreed- the BEST interview EVER. And the performance? That thud you heard was the sound of me falling out of my chair.

  28. on November 26, 2008 at 2:18 am mollyanne

Now if they would play Got Me Going Crazy at the Thanksgiving game….it would round out the perfect Jonas week. Boys? Are you listening? Hint hint.

  29. on November 26, 2008 at 2:23 am mollyanne

How cute is it that Nick is an inch taller than the other two….and the look on their faces when he pointed that out. And the look on their faces when JK asked if he could have their baby. Priceless.

  30. on November 26, 2008 at 2:33 am flamom

Yeah, you can tell Kev really wants to be the tallest! I think that is the reason for the boots! :)

I think 5′8″ is about all they can hope for. And that is just FINE.

  31. on November 26, 2008 at 3:37 am Trish

I MISSED JIMMY KIMMEL!!!! I am going to cry!
Got so busy with T’giving preparations I turned around and it was 2am. Damn.

  32. on November 26, 2008 at 3:37 am Tiffany

This is officially the best Jonas week ever.
    Three days in a row.
    Now what to do tomorrow……

  33. on November 26, 2008 at 11:08 am sharpld

I know there is a post coming for JK, so I will save my comments, but I will SQUEEEE!! here. Best interview I have seen yet.

  34. on November 26, 2008 at 11:11 am coolmom

sharpld – how adorable was Kevin in that hat?

  35. on November 26, 2008 at 11:52 am Monica

I’m so glad I DVR’d JK!! It was awesome. It was nice that JK referred to them as “good sports” since he took a jab at them on the AMAs. And the boys calling Jimmy’s booking person (whatever she is called) was hilarious. Those who didn’t see it can catch it on Youtube, I’m sure. And their performances were fantastic! I asked for Nick on the drums, and wa-la……Video Girl!! I noticed there were a lot of guys in the crowd.

  36. on November 26, 2008 at 12:01 pm coolmom

Sibling Revelers I need your help!

I’m having AC adaptor issues and my computer will die soon. I will be without SR until Friday because of the holiday (how will I stand it?). I have comments about JB on JK, but there isn’t a post yet, so I will post them here:

Well thank goodness, I was just re-entering the ionosphere and didn’t know what I was going to do, but after Jimmy Kimmel I am right back in heaven again!

I didn’t think they could get any cuter than they were on Leno, but man was I wrong. They were just delicious on Jimmy Kimmel. Kevin in that hat? He has reached a whole new level of gorgeous this week! And Joe was ON with the funnies tonight. And Nick giggling and having fun was so cute!

And talk about a laugh riot. That whole interview was priceless. The babysitting, Kevin doing his imitation of “man floating to death in space”, Nick is 1 inch taller, quesadillas, the ice cream cake, the McBurgler (I just disrespected the Hamburgler, I’m sorry dude), having Jimmy Kimmel’s baby—all hilarious! A new JB classic is born!

And then we had the performance, which was HOT! Loved that they played BB Good, and Video Girl. You make us so proud, guys!

  37. on November 26, 2008 at 12:03 pm coolmom

Keep up the JB love until I can rejoin you all!

  38. on November 26, 2008 at 12:35 pm Mae

Popping in to say that I too LOVED the JK appearance.

The prank calling bit was so great. Nick trying to not completely crack up in the background was adorable! Joe’s voice! And I especially feel for that girl! I’ve been her. At a previous job of mine I was in charge of allocating guest list, comp ticket, and pass requests and I would just dread the days that we had a big concert scheduled. That whole skit was just too, too funny – especially the guy who hung up on her!

And the interview was SO amusing! Favorite bits included Joe talking about how relieved he was to get off the AMA stage (how cool is it that he had glass on his shoes?!) and Nick bragging that he was taller than the other two. Did you see the looks on Joe and Kevin’s faces – I do believe that Joe’s jaw dropped open ; ) I wonder how much taller Nick will get? I can’t imagine much taller as they don’t seem to have height genes in the family but then again, he is only 16. He still has plenty of time to grow.

  39. on November 26, 2008 at 12:37 pm Mae

And OH – I loved the story about the ice cream cake being sent to Joe – “The box was soaking wet – I don’t know why I opened it.’ Kevin and Nick both seemed to get great amusement out of that story because they were both cracking up.

  40. on November 26, 2008 at 12:43 pm flamom

Men can grow until they are 25 in some cases! I learned that recently – so Joe and Kevin have plenty of time to catch up to Little Fro-Bro!

  41. on November 26, 2008 at 3:58 pm sharpld

Coolmom – Kevin in the hat=Kevinly. It has been an especailly gorgeous week for him, hasn’t it?

(If he does read this site, there is going to be a lot of eye rolling with what we have done with his name. I love it though!)

We will keep up the Jonas love in your absence. We will miss you. You will have to come back on Friday and join the squeeing about the Thanksgiving performance.

  42. on November 26, 2008 at 4:05 pm sharpld

I said it awhile back when Nick grew so much this summer. I do think he will end up with a few inches over his brothers. He is built differently than Joe and Kevin. And not to be snarky, because I love me some Kevin, but I would love to see a pic of them side by side without the man-heels. Kev is just so darn cute. Being on the not-tall side doesn’t hurt that one bit.

  43. on November 26, 2008 at 5:43 pm Jan

I think Nick is deserving of recognition. I really think that Kevin and Joe are extremely talented (and good looking!) but Nick is a musical genius. I believe in the future that all of the boys will do “side projects” but will always have their main focus be the group and family.

I looked at the Details list online. They have Justin Gaston, Miley Cyrus’ “boyfriend” listed at #37 as being a negative influence on how young girls will change their perception of what a boyfriend is. I am so glad that Nick was shown in a postive light.

  44. on November 26, 2008 at 8:08 pm flamom

Since it involves Nick, I got my Broadway Carols for a Cure 2008 CDs today! Very good!

  45. on November 26, 2008 at 8:12 pm flamom

It was VERY funny when JK asked Joe if the girl he liked (the reason for enrolling in the babysitting class) was a baby! Too funny!

Can someone explain to me exactly what glass was in/on Joe’s shoes? I don’t. get. it.

  46. on November 26, 2008 at 9:20 pm sharpld

Flamom, I took it to mean that they had affixed broken glass to Joe’s shoes as a reminder. Looking for photo evidence… Given the joke about the florescent bulbs, I am not so sure.
