Movin’ On Out To The House Of Blues [Awesome]

November 24, 2008 by cpaig

wow1

…because I was unable to go to the free concert the Guys gave last night at The House Of Blues in LA for their family, closest friends, and 800 very lucky fans.

The concert seem to have had a very laidback feel with lots of special guests and covers of favorite songs. It was really a celebration of music, love, and friendship resulting in what seems to have been an amazing experience. It was a party.

I really know nothing about the show other than what can be gleaned from some clandestinely recorded vids that have appeared on YouTube, so I apologize if I omit anything.

From what I can piece together the Guys covered John Mayer, The Beatles, Bob Marley, Switchfoot, Coldplay,  and Stevie Wonder with the help of Jordin Sparks, Demi Lovato, Jesse McCartney, Dan Aykroyd, Honor Society and Frankie J (no, not that one). We also get to hear JT and Ryan cover a classic.

Moreover, we get to see a whole new Jonas Brothers – where Nick messes up and laughs about it, Joe sings with beautiful melancholy, and Kevin belts out in a way that would make any red-blooded woman faint flat out.

All right, pick your jaw up off of the floor and follow me over the jump for vids! w00t vids!

I will update this as more vids become available.

These are my favorite from all that I have seen today because they are (more or less) of great quality and because they each have a great sense of stealing a moment in the mode of any great bootleg. This night was obviously special in ways that can only be partially captured, but I feel blessed just to have these little slices.

1. “Gravity” By John Mayer

What a nice song.

2. “Twenty Four” By Switchfoot

Speechless.

3. “Please Be Mine” SQUEEEEEE!!!!!!!

I cried. What can I say, I’m a sucker for this song.

4. “Superstition” By Stevie Wonder – with the beautiful and talented Jordin Sparks

I would have peed my pants. The floor would have been wet. Awesome (even though the vid is so-so, bit it’ll do).

5. “Waiting In Vain” By Bob Marley – with Ryan on lead vocals and JT!

This has no visuals (is that an arm pit?) but you really don’t need them.

6. “Get Back” By Demi Lovato

Man, she looked pretty last night, and I like this version more than I have ever liked this song. Plus, Kevin is hella cute throughout.

7. “Who Do You Love” By Bo Diddley – with Dan Aykroyd.

I love Dan Aykroyd more than words can express.

8. “Love Bug“

Nice save Nick. I love that they let “us” sing this to them.

9. “No Air” By Jordin Sparks

11. “Love Lockdown” by Kanye West (interlude)

10. “Hey Jude” By The Beatles – with, umm… I think that is everybody.

This is great, but at about 2:18 if you don’t fall in love with Kevin, you never will.

*Update* jamonit1027 on YouTube also has a bunch of other great vids from this show including: “Fix You”, “Daughters”, “Leavin’” with Jesse McCartney, and “Get Back” with Demi.

OK, that’s all I got. Did I make any glaring omissions? Your thoughts?

thud*THUD*

*picks up head slightly* Oh yeah, and we are, like, totally moving to LA.

OK how adorable is it that Joe is taking a photo of the audience with his Polaroid camera in the beginning of Lovebug?

  2. on November 25, 2008 at 12:09 am Amanda

Oh Cpaig, as always, you put it all together in a sweet little package.

I am blown away by Kevin at 2:18 in vid 9. Blown away. I have been waiting for him to bust it out. Holy smokes. I can die happy now. (pardon my fangirling but…) I LOVE YOU KEVIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. on November 25, 2008 at 12:14 am mollyanne

Cannot wait to watch all of these tonight….Jay Leno first! thanks cpaig for putting them all together!!

  4. on November 25, 2008 at 12:25 am Monica

Never thought I’d see Jonas Brothers and Dan Ackroyd in the same sentence or anywhere near each other. How hilarious……..

  5. on November 25, 2008 at 12:27 am mollyanne

I had to watch please be mine now. I couldn’t wait. It’s ok cpaig, I cried a little too. That song is unbelievable….and to hear them sing it again at this stage in their careers after the night they had is just perfect. Thanks boys.

  6. on November 25, 2008 at 12:32 am flamom

Jordin Sparks could join the JB and I’d be happy. How awesome was Superstition.

  7. on November 25, 2008 at 12:36 am mememoi

OMFG!!! Kevin in “Hey, Jude”. YESSSSSSS.

Words can’t describe the joy. Chills!!

I can’t believe they did “Please Be Mine”…so *awesome*. And yeah, I’ve also been watching the Joe’s Switchfoot cover choice over and over non-stop for 2 hours. Unbelievable.

  8. on November 25, 2008 at 12:37 am mememoi

flamom – I totally agree!! Seeing her onstage with them makes me feel good (and envious). She is awesome.

  9. on November 25, 2008 at 12:40 am mememoi

I read that they also did some Tom Petty (“Freefallin’”) and a little bit of Kanye West’s “Love Lockdown” with the audience.

I have to admit the first time I heard “Love Lockdown” I was like…Kanye should have just given this to Nick J he would NAIL IT. Haven’t seen any passable recordings though.

  10. on November 25, 2008 at 12:41 am coolmom

Excuse me, but could someone tell me what is wrong with my wife? I found her passed out in front of the computer with the craziest smile on her face. She keeps mumbling somthing about Kevin or Heaven, I’m not sure which. Do any of you know what she’s talking about? I’m worried about her, but she looks so happy I’m not sure I should wake her up. What do you all think?

    Thanks for your help,

    coolmom’s husband

  11. on November 25, 2008 at 12:43 am mememoi

    LOL!!!!!! I am dying.

  12. on November 25, 2008 at 1:03 am Barbara

OMG. Was that really Kevin in “Hey Jude”? I never hear him sing. That was amazing. I can see why everyone is so excited about that.

  13. on November 25, 2008 at 1:10 am Amanda

Oh yes, Barbara, that was Kevin.

  14. on November 25, 2008 at 1:12 am flamom

Question – hackysack game today – why is Kevin wearing protector booties on his shoes? First I assumed it was to protect his nice shoes (even though Nick isn’t doing the same). But then I noticed one other guy (roadie?) is wearing a bootie over his sneaker. So – ???? Help!

    http://photos.nickjonline.com/displayimage.php?album=1224&pos=6

  15. on November 25, 2008 at 1:23 am mememoi

Huh. It makes sense on Kevin’s fancy shoes….but not the other guy’s sneakers….

Unless they just got from strolling somewhere where they would potentially be walking in hazardous waste – I got nothin’.

  16. on November 25, 2008 at 1:24 am joefan

Demi and Jonas Brothers doing John Mayer’s “Daughters”
(one of my favorite songs of his)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7oX0_gJ1PU

(not the entire song but enough to make me repeatedly thud my head on the keyboard for not being there)

  17. on November 25, 2008 at 1:25 am joefan

flamom, I saw somewhere that an article accompanying those pictures described Ryan L. as a 21 year old version of Axl Rose (LOL)

  18. on November 25, 2008 at 1:29 am mollyanne

OMJ who out there is watching them on Leno? I’m rolling. They are all in such high spirits!!!! I’m grinning from ear to ear watching them grin from ear to ear. And laugh at each other.

  19. on November 25, 2008 at 1:30 am coolmom

Article talking about Ryan as Axl Rose:

  20. on November 25, 2008 at 1:34 am mollyanne

AYKM Joe just did a stand up routine, Nick is so happy and talkative, and I just want to give Kevin the biggest hug for being so darn cute. I am in Jonas heaven today.

  21. on November 25, 2008 at 1:43 am Trish

OMG!!!!! Jay Leno was phenomenal!!! One of the best interviews EVER! ‘Shelf’ was amazing! My daughter burst into tears! LOL!!

I thought of you Flamom when I saw Nick’s baggy pants! :)

  22. on November 25, 2008 at 1:49 am mollyanne

Trish wasn’t that the best interview ever?!?!?! I am so proud of them. Shelf was perfect- man have they been ON the last couple of days. Not that they aren’t always but the last couple of days they have totally ROCKED it.

  23. on November 25, 2008 at 1:51 am mollyanne

Yes flamom you will be very pleased…..I loved the outfit choices!!

  24. on November 25, 2008 at 2:18 am mollyanne

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9Q4dap5pBs

This is SOS from last night. Joe messed up the words and stopped the song and they started over. It was adorkable.

  25. on November 25, 2008 at 2:33 am Mae

Argh! I COMPLETELY forgot about Leno. I was so wrapped up in the other Jonas excitement today!

    *Begin rant!*

Joefan – I tried, tried, tried to enjoy Demi’s version of “Daughters” but I just can’t. I don’t like how she changed up the lyrics. To a point, I can understand changing it to a female point of view (although changing the point of view doesn’t make the line about ’standing on the/her steps with my heart in my hand’ make sense but whatever) but she messed up a lyric in the first verse – Demi sings “I know a guy, he puts the color inside of my SKY.” The correct lyrics are “I know a girl, she puts the color inside of my WORLD.”
Nit-picky much right? Heh I know, I know. I am aware of it. If you are going to cover a song – at least take the time to learn the correct lyrics or get a cheat sheet (like Joe heh). I know I am being harsh and maybe I should give her the benefit of the doubt and assume she was just nervous. I need to stop and just let it go and it enjoy it right? Right ; )

    *End rant!*

p.s. Have no clue what those booties were for. Sure are funny looking! And hacky sack! I haven’t played that since middle school.

  26. on November 25, 2008 at 2:52 am Amanda

Mae, I assume Demi was trying to rhyme “guy” with “sky” in the same way that JM rhymed “girl” with “world”.

  27. on November 25, 2008 at 3:05 am Mae

Amanda – I understand where she is coming from – but the JM fan in me is not allowing me to be understanding. JM is a brilliant songwriter – I just don’t feel like she has a right to make those changes (yet anyways: ). And come on, you have to admit, sky does not make any sense ; )

BTW Leno is up on Youtube already. JB fans are truly on top of it. I couldn’t stop myself from grinning the entire interview.

  28. on November 25, 2008 at 3:14 am mollyanne

I’ve got to say, Twenty-Four is one of my all time favorite songs. Hearing Joe sing it brought me to tears….again…..I’m such a sap. I can’t imagine having been there- I would have been a puddle of goo on the floor.

  29. on November 25, 2008 at 3:24 am Mae

Just watched the Leno performance – I couldn’t help but notice that Joe was hanging off of Nick moreso than usual ; ) I really do love their stage interactions.

  30. on November 25, 2008 at 4:33 am Trish

I still can’t get over the Leno interview!!! The headlines! Joe’s stand up act! SHELF!!! Between this and all those amazing videos doesn’t it make you wonder how there are people out there who don’t like them?!?!

Kudos to Jay for not bringing up the Joe/TS thing. He’s always a pretty good guy.

I am totally SQUEEing over these last couple of days…and tomorrow they’ll be on Jimmy Kimmel.

The videos above are Jonas fan heaven. How often do you get to see something like that? I hope those 800 fans who got to go truly appreciate it.

Kevin. *gulp* I have no words.

  31. on November 25, 2008 at 4:34 am Trish

I forgot to add I love Demi’s haircut!

  32. on November 25, 2008 at 4:44 am tlatzotzontli

I am just floored by all the recent performances (AMA, HOB, Leno). No words can begin to explain how impressed I am. They never cease to amaze me. I could watch these videos all day.

  33. on November 25, 2008 at 5:28 am tlatzotzontli

Oh, wow…here’s “Where You Look Me in the Eyes” with Frankie J who sings part of it in Spanish.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmcPCnLgVPk

I didn’t know this, but apparently, Frankie J translated the entire song in Spanish and got permission from JB to include that version on his upcoming album. I tried to find the full version in Spanish, but only found this video with one verse in Spanish. Kinda cool, nonetheless.

  34. on November 25, 2008 at 8:11 am flamom

I was so proud of the outfits! Kevin’s pants were perfect!

  35. on November 25, 2008 at 8:16 am flamom

I loved Leno – it was spectacular. Jay was so good to them. I was surprised he did not ask about the show the night before at the HOB though. But it’s OK!

I like that all 3 talked equally.

It’s so strange – Joe’s arms are so amazing lately but somehow when he is dressed, he just looks slimmer and slimmer to me. His legs even seem slimmer. He seems skinnier than when he was 17.

Nick must have a different body type – the dad’s probably. He is more solidly put together.

    Love them both!

  36. on November 25, 2008 at 9:16 am sharpld

I am a very happy fangirl. I love these boys so much! And I love that Ryan and JT got the chance to be in the spotlight.

The engery is incredible. Everyone seems to be enjoying themselves so much. Anyone who ever doubted the talent or passion of this band needs only watch these videos. I have a feeling I am going to be watching them over and over again. All day.

    Thanks for the post, cpaig!

  37. on November 25, 2008 at 9:22 am sharpld

Ack! I forgot about Jay Leno. I hope the videos wil be up soon.

  38. on November 25, 2008 at 9:37 am flamom

OK … is it just the mama bear in me coming out, because now I am actually concerned. Joe’s face really looks skinny to me. Kevin and Nick look nice and filled out but Joe’s face does not have an extra ounce of anything.

  39. on November 25, 2008 at 9:59 am mollyanne

I thought Joe looked thinner as well flamom. I wasn’t concerned until others pointed it out. I thought it was just me. I’m wondering if it’s just the stress of the last few weeks. Hopefully a hearty thanksgiving meal and time with his family does the trick.

  40. on November 25, 2008 at 10:04 am sharpld

Flamom – I understand the mama bear. I worry about all three of them. I have to think that they are healthier now than they were when they were on the road constantly. Granted, they are no less busy, but I would hope their schedule is more predictable so they can take good care of themselves. They way they have been wide-open the last few days, I think we can rest assured they are happy and healthy.

  41. on November 25, 2008 at 10:13 am mollyanne

Good point sharpld. They have been in such high spirits the last few days. I never thought of it that way. It’s hard not to worry about them all the time.
Don’t get me wrong, Joe still looks GOOD :)

  42. on November 25, 2008 at 10:13 am cpaig

I haven’t watched Leno yet, but I will try and blog it when I get home from work tonight….

go ahead and keep talking about it though – I will ref your comments.

I will also blog Jimmy Kimmel on Wednesday.

  43. on November 25, 2008 at 10:14 am sharpld

I keep replaying “Who Do You Love” and “Twenty-four.” My new favorites.

I wasn’t familiar with the Switchfoot song, so I found the original and watched it. Some songs lose so much when they are covered. Joe nails the emotion of the song. His vocals are haunting.

  44. on November 25, 2008 at 10:18 am mollyanne

Aren’t they sharpld. I’m so thrilled that the video was so clear and it seems as if most of the audience didn’t know the song so you can hear every word Joe says. I said it before, that is one of my favorite songs of all time and to hear Joe singing it- well, my life is complete :)

  45. on November 25, 2008 at 11:08 am Monica

OK – I just watched their performance on Jay Leno, and wow, it was awesome. Better than their performance on the AMAs, I think. And yes, Joe looks a little gaunt. It seems he’s lost some weight, but I’m sure all of the drama surrounding the “Unfortunate Incident” by “Ms. ‘Explicit and Direct to the Press’ Yappy Yapperton” (as Memomoi describes her) has something to do with it. If we are this concerned about Joe and his mental/physical well-being, imagine how Mama J feels!! They do seem to be happy, though.

  46. on November 25, 2008 at 11:13 am mollyanne

I know I have commented a whole lot on this post but I have one more thing to say before I head off to work.

Flamom this is mainly for you: I LOVED their pants this weekend. They were just perfect. Am I right? And am I going crazy- I am talking about their pants. For goodness sakes.

  47. on November 25, 2008 at 11:55 am Amanda

Leno was amazing…LOVE LOVE LOVE Joe hanging on Nick during the performance…and serenading Kev, as well.

Can’t wait for Jimmy Kimmel, can’t imagine JK will be as classy as Leno, though. Especially since he already took shots at JB at the AMAs.

Wonder what they will perform?! Could be anything, now that they did ‘Shelf’ on Leno. Could we dare hope for ‘Can’t Have You’??? I would die.

  48. on November 25, 2008 at 12:11 pm Mae

I think the thing with Joe is that he has super skinny legs – especially in his calfs. I think it makes him appear somewhat skinnier than he actually is.

I remember seeing the beach photos from Kevin’s bday celebration where he was shirtless and he didn’t strike me as being super skinny by any means.

  49. on November 25, 2008 at 1:13 pm flamom

Mollyanne – you’re so cute. Yes, the pants were PERFECT!!!!

Joe always had a little bit of thighs and now he does not, but it’s mainly his face that to me looks thinner. There’s just no extra anything there. It’s not like he looks sick – obviously he is GREAT – but something about him just bothered me.

I’m a Jewish mom, what can I say?

  50. on November 25, 2008 at 1:14 pm Elisa

I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again… Thank God for YouTube! Don’t know what I’d do without it. :)

I watched Jay Leno, and it was just as awesome as you’ve all said… Loved Joe’s standup! I cracked up after the first sentence, even though he hadn’t said anything funny yet, lol. I just knew it was going to be good when he brought up Kevin! I love it how they’re like any other brothers, making fun of each other, but always in a brotherly, loving kind of way. :P

I just can’t get over the HOB gig… I especially love Twenty Four. It’s such a beautiful song (I haven’t heard the original version, I’ll have to check it out) and the way Joe sang it… Sigh. He honestly is an amazing singer. (As if we didn’t already know that!) And of course, Please Be Mine… Perfection.

Today I was writing an English essay at school and I mentioned Joe in it. :D Now, it wasn’t as far-fetched as you might think – the title was “Celebrities” and I actually had a point there, but still, I thought it was kind of funny. This is how obsessed I’ve become! :P

  51. on November 25, 2008 at 1:14 pm flamom

Amanda – if I could get Live to Party or Got Me Going Crazy, I would faint. But I think I expect Tonight. :)

  52. on November 25, 2008 at 2:19 pm mememoi

Elisa, I feel the same way about Twenty-Four. I am stuck on it bad.

And I agree….Joe’s voice just sends me. It always has.

It makes sense that it does and he’s my fave, because his professed music taste is very much in line with my own. He even name-checked Oasis in the book, and I had quite the adolescent fixation on the stylings of Liam Gallagher.

And I have to wonder if Joe is at all familiar with another one of the Britpop obsessions of my past who I think is even better – Richard Ashcroft (of the Verve: Bittersweet Symphony; Lucky Man) because I really think it would be right up his alley, and there have been a number of occasions when I felt they had comparable vocal styles.

  53. on November 25, 2008 at 9:54 pm mollyanne

Bittersweet symphony- what a great song mememoi. I haven’t listened to that song in a long time. I think I will right now!

  54. on November 26, 2008 at 7:59 pm sharpld

I have caught the Twenty-four bug. I have had it going thorugh my head since I heard it. Just bought the Switchfoot album.

  55. on November 26, 2008 at 8:10 pm mememoi

Augh, me too still, SO BAD. I only bought the one track, though. So now my Switchfoot collection consists of “Twenty-Four” and the other Joe-recommended track “Only Hope”. Let me know if the whole album is worth going for!!

  56. on November 26, 2008 at 8:18 pm sharpld

It is worth it. I downloaded “The Best Yet” which was just released. I don’t know enough about Switchfoot to know how much of their career it spans, as Rhapsody can be miserably short on details and I haven’t Googled it yet, but it has been in fairly constant rotation for me. When I am not wstill re;playing thsed HoB vids or the performance vids. :-)

  57. on November 26, 2008 at 8:19 pm sharpld

I should have used spell check above.

  58. on November 26, 2008 at 8:20 pm mememoi

I know a fair amount about them in a general sense, apart from the music. Apparently the frontman, Jon Foreman, does solo projects as well and just got high critical praise for an EP structured to reflect the seasons, they were just talking about it on Idolator today in a post on Christian music.

  59. on November 26, 2008 at 8:22 pm mememoi

And good reco on the Best Of album, I might just go for it.

Meh. Spellcheck, Schmellcheck, we’re all friends here. LOL.

  60. on November 26, 2008 at 8:33 pm lemming5fe

My favorite Switchfoot song has always been New Way to be Human – but that’s also the only cd of theirs I have. My other fave (also from that album) is Let That Be Enough. For all that I’ve caught them in concert many times and love their music, I know suprisingly little of it. :) I recommend them nevertheless.

  61. on November 26, 2008 at 8:39 pm lemming5fe

Also New Way to be Human is the album Only Hope is on. :)
