It’s Really Cool Being Around Your Brothers All The Time [Watch]

August 27, 2008 by cpaig

Another unaired episode of LTD! This one is all about how the Guys are each individuals despite their perceived group persona and the fact that they really do spend nearly every moment together.

In the episode, titled “It Is Cool To Be Different”, we hear how the Guys see each other and how they feel about their status as role models. We learn that Kevin takes his job as the oldest brother very seriously and feels the burden of having 3 brothers who look up to him. He is the responsible one, but is also gregarious, goofy, and amusingly histrionic. Joe is the “jokester” who entertains everyone with his self deprecating humor, unafraid to risk life and limb (and forehead) for a bit. Nick is the competitive perfectionist who is hard on himself if he screws up (he is even hard on himself about being a perfectionist).  We also hear how they pride themselves on being wholesome and positive examples for their fans, how they love their fans, and how no one should ever be afraid to stand out from the crowd. Nick narrates.

For anyone who has devoted any time to watching Jonas Brothers interviews and media, these characterizations of the Guys are not surprising, but it is cool to hear how they see each other (and themselves). They seem pretty self aware for their age. It was also cool, and a little terrifying, learning more about Joe’s accident (50 to 60 stitches – ow, Joe! – there must have been blood everywhere - EEK!).

Check out the vid after the jump (plus a bonus)!

For some reason this episode made me want to share this vid with you.
My favorite concert vid of “Underdog” from LMITE! Enjoy!
(P.S. Nick is on drums.)

I wonder how many “extra” episodes of LTD there are? It seems like every time we turn around there’s another new episode.

It was kind of interesting in this to see Kevin get mention for trying to be responsible and trying to set a good example for his sibs. I’m sure his Mom and Dad relied on him a lot growing up, and that as preacher’s kids they were scrutinized pretty heavily. His brother’s tease him a lot, but you get the sense they also rely on him a lot too.

And Joe! I wonder if what happened to him is one of the reasons they don’t do too many nutty vids anymore. I’ll bet everyone got REALLY scared when he was hurt.

You’re so right cpaig, not only is Nick hard on himself, but he’s hard on himself about being hard on himself. Driven, intense over-achiever much, Nick?

I love Underdog. And it’s always cool to see and hear Kevin sing as much as he does in this song.

Nifty post cpaig! Thanks, and have fun tonight!

I actually got a little worried about Nick’s “perfectionist” personality. I have always loved his ambition and his drive but I don’t want him to overdo it mentally.

Poor Joe. So can you see his scar now? I know he had some plastic surgery to make it look better. Honestly I have never noticed anything and I have assumed the scar was higher up on his forehead covered by hair. I did not realize it was between his eyes.

And doesn’t Kevin appear to have a scar between his eyes too?

  3. on August 27, 2008 at 6:15 pm sharpld

I love hearing Nick say “wholesome.” I know it is a word often used to describe the brothers; yet, I am surprised to hear them use it for themselves. A bit archaic, but very cute.
And Kevin has the best smile and laugh … so genuine.

Thanks so much cpaig a for this post and cpaig and mememoi for this site. I don’t feel shame any more to like JB more than my daughter does!

  4. on August 27, 2008 at 9:43 pm Amanda

Coolmom…lol about ‘Nick being hard on himself for being hard on himself’… remember the slave driver nightmare?!?!

  5. on August 27, 2008 at 9:52 pm coolmom

Amanda you read my mind!! That is EXACTLY what I was thinking about.

Nick Jonas is absolutely the oldest almost-16 year old I have ever seen. I just want to hug him and tell him it’s going to be all right.

  6. on August 28, 2008 at 12:30 am Amanda

Coolmom…yeah, I want to hug him too (again):). I certainly don’t want to get pervy about it but if I were 25 years younger…yeah. lol

I mean, I fantastically admire his musical genius, his attitude, his bravery, his voice, his smile, his hair, even his being hard on himself, but he’s… all kinds of adorable, too. Hehe.

And I call myself a Kevin fan. ‘Cause I REALLY like me some Kevin. You know what? Sometime I REALLY like Joe, too. Ah, heck, I’ll just take all of ‘em.

I hope the girls are having a blast at the concert. I’m so jealous!

  7. on August 28, 2008 at 10:20 am mykidsthinkimweird

I’ve been browsing this site for quite a while, and I want to join the discussion.

I love this episode because the boys seem unusually candid. They rarely talk about the big mistakes they (Joe!) make. We actually see Joe with his doctor and a closeup of his scar. When Joe brought up the AMA fall at the TCA, it was such a cold/sterile admission that the fall was embarrassing. You know that his emotions surrounding that accident were much more intense.

It’s funny that, as a mom, I think about Kevin, Joe and Nick in such a mother hen way. Don’t get me wrong, I wish I were 25 years younger too!

  8. on August 28, 2008 at 11:34 am Mae

I’m a newbie as well who decided to also jump into the conversation.

I very much so agree with mykidsthinkimweird – I think this episode was quite candid. I definitely got the feeling that Joe was more than a little self conscious about that scar.

I also wanted to comment on that fact that I think it is great that the boys are so affectionate with one another. I look at my brothers (who are now 26 and 23) and although they were super close growing up – they tended to avoid any physical contact beyond a fist knock, high five or handshake, and the occasional hug, you know, like on the older one’s wedding day : P But really, the footage at the very beginning of the episode of Joe and Nick hugging before the show, and the three of them celebrating a show well done just seemed so genuine. I couldn’t help but to smile.

  9. on August 28, 2008 at 1:42 pm coolmom

You ladies are both very right. This episode was very candid, maybe that’s the very reason that it wasn’t broadcast on Disney? I was a little worried looking at Joe’s scar, man that must have been BAD.

It IS wonderful how un-selfconscious JB are about being affectionate with each other. Did you all see the MTV Live & Mobile videos? When they were getting ready to go on stage at Madison Square Garden, they have some really close, loving moments enjoying what was an amazing night in their career.

  10. on August 28, 2008 at 2:43 pm Mae

I did see the MSG pre-stage MTV Live & Mobile video. I think I might have actually ‘awwed’ outloud. I just couldn’t help myself.

I have to admit though, I winced a little bit when I noticed that Kevin was kinda left out of the ‘Love You’s’ and head-knock. Not that I think he minded as he was so jazzed up for the show, but I still thought it was kinda odd.

Another note about that video, kinda going back to something that was mentioned above as well, it is not often that I too think Nick looks and acts like a 15 year old, but during the moment when he was jumping up and down in anticipation, he totally seemed 15. And I loved that.

  11. on August 28, 2008 at 4:02 pm Amanda

Hi Mae, glad you de-lurked! :)

I noticed the same thing you did on the MTV Live & Mobile vids. Joe and Nick shared that moment, very touching, backstage, and Kevin tried to get in on it at the end, touching Joe’s head, but the moment was over. Then Nick fist-pounded Kevin. But it wasn’t the same as the Nick/Joe moment.

In another vid, Nick challenges Joe to a ‘bubble-off’ contest, who can blow the biggest bubble while they’re waiting in the car.

After they start the contest, Kevin calls out to Big Rob, “Hey, Big Rob, you have any gum? I want to get in on this bubble-off.” Nick and Joe don’t say anything, just keep on with the contest, and Kevin tries to blow bubbles too.

I don’t know, I’ve just noticed lately that Kevin seems to be on the outside looking in with Joe & Nick. Maybe because Kevin is older, Joe and Nick leave him out sometimes?

I hope we’re making something over nothing. ‘Cause Kevin is secretly my favorite. But I love all three equally. :)

I agree about Nick always seeming older than his years. I love it when he acts 15 (almost 16!) too.

  12. on August 28, 2008 at 4:36 pm coolmom

I think it’s mostly just that Kevin is older. After all, until pretty recently, Kevin was the only one out of school.

  13. on August 28, 2008 at 5:02 pm sharpld

I hope it’s okay if I join in. I have a bit of a rant.

My heart is breaking for Kevin today, for the reasons mentioned above by Mae and Amanda and by the hate that still persists (more on this to follow). Seems like it is just all coming together at once.

Kevin does seem to be left out a lot by his little brothers. I would say it is an age thing, but Kevin and Joe are much closer in age than Joe and Nick… even in the most recent Scratch and Sniff Jonas video on YouTube, Kevin doesn’t seem to be part of the action until the very end. Watching the “Bubble Off” was a little painful. Kevin really wanted to be included. Then again, dynamics of three are always strange. Someone always seems to get left out.

To compound my heartache, my daughter and I bought some cheesy teenybopper magazines last night. (She loves Joe and was excited to see him on so many covers. I loved having a good excuse to buy the mags with her by my side.) It seems like the media is trying hard to make Kevin the awkward one. Tiger Beat had two separate instances in the one issue of calling out that he considered himself a nerd in school and that he was teased and had few friends. On the front cover the lead in for Kevin is: “Who bullied Kevin?” For Nick: “My crush made me nervous.” For Joe: “I fell in front of a cute girl.” The theme of the edition is supposed to be back-to-school advice, but I don’t think Kevin’s truthfulness and candor are working in his favor in this instance. It seems as if those endearing traits are being used against him.

Next, on the Jonas Brothers fan site are two links to “sightings” of Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez at last night’s show, which apparently confirms the dating rumors in the eyes of the people who responded. I have no problem with that. I do have a problem with the comments about the omission of a sighting for Kevin, which were less than kind and super-speculative.

The mom in me just wants to give this boy a hug, a kiss on the top of those curls, and let him know he is loved. Very much.

  14. on August 28, 2008 at 5:08 pm cpaig

I am honestly assuming that Kevin did have a “sighting” there. If speculation is correct, she is not anyone the gossip rags would be drooling over, so she is not mentioned. That is my hope anyway.

I love Kevin, I identify with him and his nerdy ways. I agree that it is awful that he is made the goof – did you see the special people on Kevin? It was enough to make you cry!

  15. on August 28, 2008 at 5:19 pm coolmom

cpaig, what special people Kevin? Am I missing something?

  16. on August 28, 2008 at 5:24 pm cpaig

sorry Coolmom -I am talking about the People special edition magazine. In the Kevin Q&A it was all “I had few friends”, etc.

Not… “special people” on Kevin – though I am sure he would welcome them with open arms. LOL. I have a bad cold and am beat from getting in so late last night – I am not running on all cylinders.

We will go into more detail, but the show was great, we saw neither Selena nor Taylor, though we did see the band from the Veronicas watching from the wings.

  17. on August 28, 2008 at 5:49 pm coolmom

OK, I’m with you now. I actually think it’s pretty brave of Kevin to be so honest about how he wasn’t the popular kid in school – and undoubtedly there are LOTS of fans who can relate. But it is sad how his frankness and courage can often present him in a less than flattering light.

People are ignorant, and threatened by a guy who is musical, creative and has a daring sense of style. Our society is unfortunately not as enlightened as it should be, and men MUST fall into one stereotypical “type” or another. Wrong, petty, superficial, ridiculous, crass, prejudiced, and a waste of everyone’s time!!!

You go Kevin, your hotness is undeniable, and we discerning types love you for ALL that you are!

  18. on August 28, 2008 at 5:51 pm cpaig

    I love you Coolmom.

  19. on August 28, 2008 at 5:54 pm coolmom

    Awwwwww shucks. *blush*

  20. on August 28, 2008 at 5:57 pm Amanda

Cpaig, sorry you have a cold…when you feel better, we need more details! :)

All we can do is continue spreading the Kevin love and keep things positive.

Cpaig, not sure who you’re talking about that might have been there for Kevin, I hope whoever it is loves him for him and he is happy. That is all I want (well, not really, but you know.)

  21. on August 28, 2008 at 5:58 pm Amanda

    Coolmom, amen.

  22. on August 28, 2008 at 6:14 pm mememoi

Hey guys – had to chime in! I am also still recuperating from last night (obvious capsule review: bliss! more later…)

I think it’s good that Kevin is honest about who he is…God knows he can’t hide it, and why bother? There are, indeed, so many parading stereotypes out there, and I think that is something that drew me deeply to these Boys. I don’t think there is a thing stereotypical about them. They always surprise me, they are unabashedly themselves, and they seem to know that is something they never have to feel bad about, no matter what anyone says. (Currently sending a child into the jungles of grade school this is a lesson I am pleased to have modeled for my girl, other than by me!!)

I think what you said, sharpld, about one of them always being left out, is true! We are a family of 3 sisters, and it usually works out that way.

With the Jonases, it seemed like Kevin and Joe were very close in younger days, with Nick taken up with working from such a young age. They were the one sitting at home dubbing videos and swallowing quarters together. Now on tour, with Kevin getting his own room, as the elder, Nick & Joe seem to have bonded boarding together, and sometimes it’s at Kevin’s expense. (And to be fair, sometimes Joe seems like the odd one, too!)

  23. on August 28, 2008 at 6:27 pm Mae

sharpld, I have something to add to your rant.

I’ve been noticing that in a lot of the recent album reviews for ‘A Little Bit Longer’ and Burnin’ Up concert reviews (I am a big nerd who has the boys on a google alert), Kevin has been labeled “and The Other One.” Like critics don’t exactly know how to describe him, i.e. Joe’s the hot frontman, Nick is the musical genius, and Kevin is just “happy to be included” or whatever. I could go search through my email for an exact quote but I am at work at the moment and that might not be a productive use of my time : P

It’s just that a review will be overall positive but will then sneak in a snarky comment about Kevin.

  24. on August 28, 2008 at 6:30 pm mememoi

BTW, let me say WELCOME to sharpld, Mae and mykidsthinkimweird and all of our new commenters!! We are thrilled you are here.

(“De-lurked”, as it were….LOVE it, Amanda.)

  25. on August 28, 2008 at 6:36 pm cpaig

Mae – those comments always cheese me off because when you go to a show you know that Kevin is an amazing performer.

No he is not singing lead, no he is not always up front, but if he wasn’t there it would be really boring.

Kevin tells us when to clap, how to clap, when to jump. He is a great guitar player. He makes the BEST faces on stage (Like at our show he made the cutest “I am sorry, but I have to spray foam on you now.” face. He also made the whoke arena melt when he took out his monitor and blew everyone a kiss during “Hello Beautiful.” (They all took out their monitors, and they were all sweet, but Kevin’s reaction caused everyone – in our section at least – to let out an audible sigh.)

Kevin will be fine. I wish I was as confident in my own skin as he seems to be.

And as one of 3 – someone is always left out – it goes in stages.

  26. on August 28, 2008 at 6:37 pm mememoi

Mae, I agree…we were really freaked out that that was happening in some reputable news outlets.

Brotherly dynamics are one thing…but I don’t understand the urge of perfect strangers picking on him. I like to think, that even though they sometimes gang together against him, Joe & Nick (and all of Family/Team Jonas) will shore up Kev’s spirits about any of that sort of ridiculousness.

  27. on August 28, 2008 at 8:15 pm Amanda

Cpaig, I’m confused, are you talking about their in-ear monitors? And why would Kev take it out to blow a kiss? Or why would they all take them out?

I know Nick usually only wears one ear, his right, I believe.

  28. on August 28, 2008 at 8:23 pm cpaig

They took them out so they could hear the crowd. When they are in they cannot hear us screaming.

I don’t know about Nick and the one monitor…

  29. on August 28, 2008 at 8:31 pm Amanda

Thanks for clearing that up for me, cpaig. :) Now I get it. Sometimes it just takes me awhile, I’m old, you know. lol

Any pic you see of Nick on stage, one of his in-ear monitors is always hanging from it’s stringy thing usually perched on his shirt. I think he just likes it that way, maybe he can hear himself singing better with just one in.

  30. on August 28, 2008 at 8:55 pm flamom

Just an aside, those ear monitor things hanging down on their shirts tend to freak me out.

  31. on August 28, 2008 at 8:57 pm mememoi

    How come, flamom?

    Monitorphobia!! (JK, JK.)

  32. on August 28, 2008 at 9:45 pm sharpld

Wow. I got behind the blog curve. Thanks everyone for all of the positive Kevin energy. It just frosts me to no end when he gets dismissed out of hand because he isn’t the frontman, the musical genius, or any of those other pitched-at-the-lowest-common-denominator classifiers. I mean no offense to Nick and Joe, who own those classifiers and make them uniquely Jonas. Coolmom, thanks for stating it so well in your response. Another heartfelt “Amen!”

My daughter and I took the staples out of the Twist and Tiger Beat issues. She divided up the posters, asking which ones I wanted. I, of course, responded that I only wanted ones of Kevin. It took her a little while to divide them up. When she was done, she pointed out the spot in my office where mine can go.

Yep, I will be proud to hang my one lovely poster of Kevin.

  33. on August 28, 2008 at 11:14 pm Amanda

Sharpld, at least you get to hang one! As most everyone knows on here, my hubby does not take too kindly to me worshiping the boys, I have to go in my daughter’s room and look at her walls, ceiling, closet, etc. to get my fix. lol

Although he is getting better. He did say he would go with us to the Bahamas if we win that Verizon-sponsored ‘go on vacation with JB’ thing. Yay!

It bugs me when they put posters back to back in magazines, usually Kevin back to back with one of his brothers or sometimes Kevin’s is back to back with a pic of the three of them.

We’re pretty much out of space in my daughter’s room to hang any more posters anyway. I’m not sure why we chose that pretty neon green for the walls, because you can’t even see the paint for the posters (but I’m not complaining).

Wow, they weren’t kidding about a new website!
    (shameless Demi plug, anyone?!) JK

  35. on August 28, 2008 at 11:23 pm cpaig

    I know, Amanda

Unfortunately, since I have a stuffed up nose, I am unable to smell the orange scent – the album plug came through loud and clear though – lol.

  36. on August 28, 2008 at 11:29 pm Amanda

Cpaig, stuffy noses are the worst.

Take 2 or 3 Jonases and call me in the morning. lol

  37. on August 28, 2008 at 11:43 pm cpaig

    Will do! LOL

  38. on August 28, 2008 at 11:47 pm flamom

Those ear monitors just look so strange hanging down – I always wonder what part of the body just fell off … I don’t know – they just look so odd to me – I wish they were not peachy color. :)

  39. on August 29, 2008 at 9:13 am Amanda

    I know they’re different colors…I’m searching for pics…

    file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Amanda/My%20Documents/My%20Pictures/Jonas%20Brothers%20Pictures/JB%20Pictures/joe%20&%20mike%20stand%20wheatland.jpg

    Joe’s are clear/silver-ish

    file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Amanda/My%20Documents/My%20Pictures/Jonas%20Brothers%20Pictures/JB%20Pictures/kevin%20brown%20hat.jpg

    Kevin’s are beige-ish

    file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Amanda/My%20Documents/My%20Pictures/Jonas%20Brothers%20Pictures/JB%20Pictures/nick%20dc.jpg

    Nick’s are the flesh/peach-colored ones

Wow, this was a lot of work for really no point. lol
Enjoy, flamom! Hope I didn’t just traumatize you!!

  40. on August 29, 2008 at 9:16 am Amanda

Dang~ it didn’t work~ oh well, you have to highlight, copy and paste and then it works. I told ya’ll I’m old and computer-y challenged!

  41. on August 29, 2008 at 9:58 am mememoi

Yes that plug was eyeroll-worthy! Plus it bothered me that the video said the album was coming sooner than the website but now the website is up and the album isn’t out for a month so it contradicts itself…is that nitpicky?

Amanda – email me those files at siblingrevelryblog@gmail.com and I will post them!

  42. on August 29, 2008 at 10:17 am flamom

Amanda, you get an award for that.

And that is why I notice Nick’s I guess! Because they are the skin color ones that freak me out! :) I have seen Kevin’s before but never Joe’s.

  43. on August 29, 2008 at 10:43 am Amanda

Mememoi, nitpicky but very true. I think like you do. Whenever I nitpick about something that happens on tv or in a movie that ruins the continuity, my hubby always says, “..it was in the script.” Drives me crazy.

  44. on August 29, 2008 at 12:37 pm sharpld

I guess the colors help them tell them apart. Would it be gross to wear your brother’s ear monitors? Video “show and tell” does have them wearing each other’s clothes …

Mememoi and Amanda, I am there with you on the nitpicking. I guess we will just have to believe the “scratch and sniff” functionality will be enabled in a future rev so that their words hold true. :-)

Yes it would be gross. But I think they should all get whichever ones Joe wears. THey are the least weird! They could mark them with initials. :)

  47. on August 29, 2008 at 3:23 pm mememoi

So true…and you know there are probably only three available colors, and Joe was all over the coolest ones first. That’s my boy. LOL.

  48. on August 29, 2008 at 9:42 pm flamom

That’s right! Joe is awesomely cool. :)
