OK – I am like totally obsessed with these Proclaim! Teen Talk Special Report: Celebrity Teens Who Are Positive Role Models with the Jonas Brothers videos. I’m obsessed for a few reasons. First, I love the Jonas Brothers (duh); second, it is a pretty great interview; and third, I have been planning this flashback for months and watching the clips repeatedly.*
To put it in context, it is Tuesday, August 14, 2007 somewhere in Greensburg, PA. It is 7 days after the release of Jonas Brothers (Which hit the album charts at #5 selling 69,000 copies in the first week). 3 days away from the premiere of their guest appearance on Hannah Montana. 1 day before Joe’s 18th birthday. And mere hours before playing a sold out show for 1,320 people at The Palace Theater while on their Marvelous Party (or “Prom Theme“) Tour.
They haven’t yet filmed Camp Rock or performed at the Texas State Fair. They even have yet to live-chat with us fans. They have 3, and the better part of 4, tours ahead of them in the US and Europe as well as countless appearances, free shows, airline miles, tour bus miles, exponentially growing venues, and screaming crazy (bus chasing) fans.
They are on the cusp of an epic 12 months.
*I know, months? I was trying to make a clip reel and my computer was just not up to the task. I have given up and give you the entire interview instead.
Find videos and more after the jump.
The interview is wonderful because they are so relaxed and candid. It is presided over by the eternally stiff, but charmingly effective, Crispin Havener and we get to hear all about recording Jonas Brothers, touring, what it’s like being famous, J.O.N.A.S. (when it was still about spies), and advice for people interested in pursuing a music career.
But what I love best, hands down, is the body language and non-verbal communication between the Boys, who obviously find the whole thing quite amusing. It is just chock full of gem moments. We get to see that, despite now being a bit more road weary and more defensively guarded when it comes to certain questions, they are still essentially the same guys. It does make me sad that now that their every breath is such a commodity that these days interviews like this are few and far between.
One item of particular note. Despite being filmed for a Catholic teen program (including a commercial about peer pressure at the end of each clip) Crispin never asks about their purity rings. Maybe that is why they are so relaxed and candid.
Part 1: Jonas Brothers, Touring, Fans, It’s About Time vs. Jonas Brothers, Disney & J.O.N.A.S., Fame.
Obsessive detail moment (above):
0:42 Joe seems to find the camera guy to be creepy.
6:22 Kevin is unable to look at Joe after Crispin makes his bad “J.O.N.A.S.” joke.
Part 2: Perks, Performing, Environment?, Family & Friends, Fun!, School, Drug References, Practice, Practice, Practice.
Obsessive detail moment (above):
1:56 Joe kicks Kevin under the table.
4:12 Kevin does a little dance to a song he is singing in his head.
And there’s much more! Enjoy!

It’s interesting seeing this in light of what has come after. It’s all ahead of them here, you almost want to stop them in time, because they will never be this young, inexperienced in the intensity of fame, and unaware of their charismatic effect on people again. I was touched by Kevin saying how they liked to do normal teenage things like go to the mall, because they can’t do those things anymore. I know they wouldn’t change anything they have now, but Kevin obviously had no idea he would ever NOT be able to go to the mall.
It’s also interesting watching the Pepsi Smash vid after seeing this, because here they are so in tune, communicating without saying a word, and enjoying each other. They communicate non-verbally in the Pepsi Smash vid too, but they’re NOT enjoying each other much.
That is an amazing point Coolmom – about this and the Pepsi smash vids.
They can be so real and transparent and that is why people feel so connected to them.
I agree about Kevin and the mall. I hope that is not a regret that lingers, because eventually most people hate going to the mall. I know I do. Unless it is a really awesome mall. But when I was 19 – my roommate and I would cut class (in college) and go to the mall – so – I feel you Kevin.
That is true; but they have always had their moments of dumping on each other – which we revel in – and I think it does ground them. Within about a month of this, Joe would be strangling Kevin at the livechat. (When Kevin was snarking on the likelihood of Joe ever riding a motorcycle, funnily enough!)
But I know what you mean, their conflicts used to be underscored with giggles, but can have more of an edge now when they can’t escape each other. They are also becoming more manly, so perhaps some of it is just the posturing of growing up and defining themselves more harshly against each other in order to find themselves – a small rebellion they can realistically have, right?
I think they are very close, and nothing changes that, and siblings DO NOT always get along, I can attest to that from watching my daughters.
But your point about about their not being able to escape each other is important mememoi. The three of them are isolated now in a way in a way they weren’t in these vids. Choosing to share in-jokes and reveling in shared experiences is different when there truly isn’t ANYONE but your two brothers who really understands your life experience.
Sad, but true Coolmom.
Luckily the whole family is nearly equally famous – so they are all in it together.
I just saw the “Band In A Bus” episode 8 which is titled “One Family”. Interestingly enough, it’s about how they sometimes get on each other’s nerves on the road. These were filmed during BOBW around Kevin’s birthday, so obviously it’s nothing new, LOL! That makes me feel better.
I do often wonder what it would be like not to be able to just run out to Target or whereever and buy toothpaste or shampoo when you need it. It’s one of those stupid little errands that no ones wants to do but I can’t imagine what it would be like not to be able to do it.
I forgot to check band in a bus too. i have the site bookmarked but I forgot all about it, I guess i know where i’m headed next.
I know I’ve mentioned it before but I love it here, I was beginning to believe I was the only fan out there over the age of 23.
Well Mandi we are happy to have you (and all of our wonderful readers and commenters).
We were having fun writing this blog before, but now that we have such loyal, smart, and funny people contributing to the narrative it is so much more fun!
There is a reason I’m stiff, this was my first tv interview ever (not many can say they had thei first interview being with someone on the level of them) and yes I do have a bad sense of humor sometimes (Ex. The J.O.N.A.S Joke) so that’s all true, and these are mild complaints comapred to the the hundreds of worse ones on YouTube
Thanks for re-visiting this, it was cool to read, having interviewed them last year, it was obvious then why so many liked them and its amazing how far they’ve come since we interviewed them at the Palace Theater in Greensburg 13 months ago.
Also I want to addresse the purity ring issue, we were asked not to get into their faith life by their higher ups, we could say they had a faith background, but not allowed to ask about it…including then purity ring, or else we would have focused more time on it.
Hi, Crispin!!
Thanks for responding…please don’t feel badly – we LOVE this interview! (And we get sarcastic about just about everything.) And even if we poked fun, you still created one of the most memorable interviews with them of the past year and a half. No small feat in a big pool. So thank you for that!
And thanks for the information – it’s really interesting to hear where the line is drawn on what topics you can address with them in an interview, and who draws it.
Hope you’re keeping it up!
