Hey, stop falling!  OK, listen, dude…

    Wow! An open post!

I just took a gander at some of the latest comments at Rolling Stone. I was happy to see that there are several comments from people who had formerly been skeptical but changed their opinions after attending a concert, reading the article etc. And these people seem older, they are parents in both cases. There was some thoughtful acknowledgment of how JB is encouraging kids to listen to older music, and even in many cases to pick up instruments themselves. Nifty, no? Could it be that discerning people will be compelled to check out JB for themselves rather than dismiss them on principal? Is it too much to hope for?

I took an opportunity today, at Target, for some Jonas PR. I bought my 5year old a “Shane” shirt (So I can look like a Rock and Roll girl, Mommy!) and the lady at the checkout commented on the Jonas Brothers, said her daughter had been into Hanson. I told her how JB’s music is really good and not just for tweens. Spreading the word, one person at a time!

Also, have you heard that JB is going to be on Larry King on August 5? I’m excited. A live interview, should be interesting.

And I just read a cool article that said how JB is now the first artist to have had three singles in a row (Pushin’ Me Away, Burnin’ Up and Play My Music )with over 100,000 downloads in the first week. “Pushin’ Me Away” debuted at #16 based on just the downloads, because radio doesn’t play it much. But it is #2 on the Hot Digital List. That’s kind of cool isn’t it?

  2. on July 24, 2008 at 10:46 pm flamom

Larry King! Oh my! That should be awkward. :)

You sure picked a great photo to head up this open thread!!

OK … so has everyone heard “Out of This World” – the bonus song on the UK release of “Jonas Brothers?” It is about a space girl and I think an unusual topic for a love song … but Nick sounds SO sweet singing it, and I like his breathy voice in it. I have been listening to it a lot. I am considering getting the UK Jonas Brothers in order to have a good copy to hear.

My husband told me don’t worry what other people think, go ahead and feel however you want to feel about them. And so I have been promoting them whenever and wherever also.

I think time is going to prove that they are the real thing and they are here to stay. They have something very special and I believe very strongly in Nick’s talent and Joe’s showmanship and Kevin’s enthusiasm.

  3. on July 24, 2008 at 10:56 pm coolmom

OK, I’m back. Now that I know there is an open post, I’ll be compelled to fill it. I saw a comment on the RS site yesterday saying that JB was a 21st century Monkees, except that their songs suck. Obviously, this person isn’t a fan. But the comment got me thinking. The Monkees were NOT musicians, per se. They didn’t write or play their songs. They were actors. I don’t know if any of you has ever seen The Monkees, but as a child of the 60’s I never missed it. So, where am I going with this?

The comparison to the Monkees got me thinking about J.O.N.A.S. I am getting a little apprehensive about how that show is going to go down. I HOPE that the creative team will make use of JB’s natural gifts. If I could give a hint to the writers it would be this: give the guys a scenario, a line or two to start them off, then let them go at it. Listen carefully, write down the good stuff they come up with, and let that be your script.

The dismal Itunes podcasts we’ve seen recently show us that even JB can be wooden and uninteresting. Please don’t that happen on their TV show!

  4. on July 24, 2008 at 11:00 pm cpaig

    Very cool about the downloads.

Speaking of spreading the word on JB, my boss asked why I was taking a vacation day tomorrow and I was like I am going to a concert. Ah he actually said “going to see the Boys?”

    I thought it was sweet.

We took a (depressing) trip to the mall today to check out The Disney Store (they were out of mugs) but ended up spending some time in Claires.

I almost bought 2 posters of Kevin, not because I have any intention of putting them anywhere, but because I was sad that they were the only two posters left in the bin.

I LOVE “Out of This World” Nick does sound so sweet. I did buy the UK album and I am enjoying it (I talked a little about why I splurged on it in an earlier post).

  5. on July 24, 2008 at 11:03 pm coolmom

    flamom-

Do you think Larry King is too “mature” (read old) to get JB? Or am I being unfair?

I like “Out of This World”. It has an almost musical theatre-ish feel to it. I like that JB will take something off-beat and make a song out of it. Have you heard “Kung-Fu Grip”? Another out-there topic for a love song.

  6. on July 24, 2008 at 11:04 pm cpaig

Mememoi will verify that I have been wary of the idea of J.O.N.A.S. and worry that it will hurt their cred as musicians.

I know the Monkeys well – I’ve even seen them in concert! But I agree the comparison is troubling.

Mememoi assures me that there will be nothing wrong with seeing them often. But, IDK.

I just have faith that the JB have proved me wrong any time I question their choices (professional choices).

I will be honest, I was kinda hoping the series would die with the writer’s strike.

  7. on July 24, 2008 at 11:15 pm mememoi

I looooove Out of This World! It’s definitely one of my favorite morning commute songs. My 5yo calls it “Thank You, Gravity”, and asks for it by that name. (Also, your husband is totally sweet.)

As for Larry King, I am all for it!! But I don’t usually watch…doesn’t he lob softballs for the most part?

And lastly, I am not that cynical about the Monkees. I love them! They were my first live concert (at 6 or so) after all…even if they were performers and not creators, it doesn’t bother me that much. I think there is room for that (ie. Miley? – who I like fine)…but of course it is not an accurate description of the Boys.

I completely agree with the idea that they should be allowed creative control of the show if it happens. But I don’t know if that will happen. Execs are clueless and stubborn. But I was encouraged by the way the pilot was being shot, more glossy than the ultra-sitcom style of Hannah Montana.

Still, I would not be a bit surprised if the project gets scrapped, or rolled into a different sort of project…like a DCOM or miniseries. A full season show seems like something they signed on for before they took off, and an awkward fit for them now.

  8. on July 24, 2008 at 11:17 pm coolmom

Hey you’ve got me beat, I never got to see them in concert! I loved that show, Davy Jones was my very first crush. Ha!

I’m just nervous that the show won’t showcase THEM – the funny, swoony, dippy, sweet, natural, uninhibited guys we so love. A lot can happen between idea and execution.

  9. on July 24, 2008 at 11:23 pm cpaig

Still agreeing with coolmom about J.O.N.A.S.

Re: the Monkey’s concert, I was 10, Herman’s Hermits opened for them! It was loads of fun!

  10. on July 24, 2008 at 11:23 pm coolmom

I like the idea of a DCOM or miniseries. An “event” type project would be less restrictive for them, and probably allow them more control. I vote for that.

  11. on July 24, 2008 at 11:27 pm mememoi

We should so start a petition!!

Like the peeps who are like “COME TO [insert state here] FOR THE 346th time”. (Note to those girls: I admire your conviction!)

  12. on July 24, 2008 at 11:27 pm coolmom

Herman’s Hermits? En-ery the Eigth I am? LOVE it! My best friend had their album. We would play it and play pool in her garage. Good times.

  13. on July 24, 2008 at 11:29 pm coolmom

    mememoi-

That is a GREAT idea! Where does one go to begin a petitioni?

  14. on July 24, 2008 at 11:45 pm mememoi

Good question. This is the only site I know of, but I am not sure how effective it is: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/

There could be better ones but I’ve never tried one!

  15. on July 24, 2008 at 11:50 pm coolmom

There is actually a Jonas Brothers petition there already. Some girls want the guys to go head to head in a cook off on Racheal (their misspelling) Ray. They have three signatures (their’s, I’m guessing). LOL

  16. on July 24, 2008 at 11:55 pm mememoi

    Haha…Well I can’t say I wouldn’t be all over THAT.

Even after the time Ms. Ray weirdly told Denise she was glad she had a dog instead of kids because it would never buy her wrinkle cream as a gift (as they apparently once did).

  17. on July 25, 2008 at 12:05 am coolmom

I saw that show. That’s where I heard about the Breakfast Breaks contest for Mom’s Craziest Morning. That’s a sore subject for me, because I entered, and they REJECTED my essay!!! The nerve! And they never said what was wrong with it, just that it didn’t meet the criteria. I decided that it was just too brilliant and simply destroyed the curve. No free tickets for me.

  18. on July 25, 2008 at 12:13 am mememoi

That totally blows. Next time, next time!!

  19. on July 25, 2008 at 12:28 am flamom

I also am VERY concerned about the TV show. I do NOT think it’s a good idea for them. I think it is just going to take up their time, tire them out, and solidify the whole “Disney” image for them. They should be doing the music thing – writing, playing and recording songs.

  20. on July 25, 2008 at 12:33 am flamom

I think I might get that UK Jonas Brothers – thanks for the extra encouragement!

I’m nervous about Larry King because he asks really stupid questions. He’s bound to embarrass them a LOT.

BTW I saw Mamma Mia tonight and it was very fun! I am going to get some ABBA music for my kids.

What do you think of “Move On?” We’ve been listening to it on YouTube recently and my daughter calls it the “mean song.” :) It is mean! It makes me laugh though. It’s so teenager.

  21. on July 25, 2008 at 12:36 am flamom

Me again! Have you all heard about the new Muppets variety special on the Disney channel on Aug 3? The JB will be performing while Miss Piggy tries to join them as the long-lost Jonas sister. I love the Muppets! Miley and other Disney stars will be on it too.

  22. on July 25, 2008 at 12:51 am coolmom

Yes, I saw a commercial for it today. Miss Piggy in a black wig saying her name is Joan S. I think it will be a hoot. My kids can’t wait.

  23. on July 25, 2008 at 1:06 am flamom

I just ordered the UK CD. I did try to buy songs from the UK iTunes first but you can’t buy from a country you can’t be billed in. :(

  24. on July 25, 2008 at 8:50 am cpaig

Flamom – iTunes needs to figure things out with the downloading. I think it is a legal thing though. I am a big fan of this British soap and they stream online, but I can’t watch because I am in the US. :(

I think MOVE ON is hilarious. We sort of have lots of fun theories running around about it. The first being that the song is about a bad breakup which Joe experienced and that is why he is singing so passionately. The second that it is a song about a breakup that Kevin experienced and Joe is going to bad for him.

I love (cockamamie) theory 2 because I find it very sweet.

Check out mememoi’s take on the song here.

But the vid that makes us roll on the floor every time – because of joe, and the stool he could not stay on – is this one HERE.

We haven’t discussed it because it got play on Perez and such, but some awesome classic pre-Jonas Jonas.

  25. on July 25, 2008 at 9:08 am coolmom

Good morning! I heard that MOVE ON is about Joe’s breakup with AJ Michalka of Aly and AJ. They have POTENTIAL BREAKUP SONG, which is reported to be about Joe. I don’t know which came first.

  26. on July 25, 2008 at 9:59 am cpaig

Yeah, I’ve heard that too. Considering she didn’t seem to clap when they won at the Kid’s Choice Awards that may be true.

If it is together they are kind of a good illustration of why boys and girls don’t get along sometimes.

Girls just seem to be obsessed with being called back. I think that now there are 300 ways to communicate many of which take so little time to execute – like a text – that when no communication is sent it is thought of as a huge offense.

They assume if they don’t call they don’t care. While I am sure it is true some of the time, it is not as well, and I think it puts guys off when girls get so “needy.”

IDK if the song battle is true. Aly & AJ definitely had a motive for making it seem that way (the motive being people actually listening to their songs – lol – sorry A&A). It smacks a little of rumor created by the record label.

  27. on July 25, 2008 at 10:15 am mememoi

I’ve heard that it’s about AJ too…but I am not sure if I believe it. It’s like the 7 Things thing. These boys are so young and guileless (but mostly the young part) that the interpretations of their misbehavior make me laugh. Mostly because guys that age always seem mostly clueless when it comes to teen girls’ emotional drama.

Move on was performed once (April 2007), which was before Potential Breakup Song was released…I think. I like that song, but I’m no Aly & AJ expert.

flamom – I agree on Joe’s hair being awkward right now. It’s got that long swept bang on the (our) right that forever seems to irritate him, so he touches it a lot. Which is irritating.

As for ABBA, I don’t know if I’ll get a chance to see the movie but I LOVE ABBA!!! My college roommate got me really into them (we listened while we got ready to go out on the town – so buoyant). And they also use their music to great effect in one of my favorite movies of all time, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (the Australian drag queen buddy movie…have you seen it?).

  28. on July 25, 2008 at 10:37 am cpaig

LOVE ABBA – it is also used to great effect in Muriel’s Wedding – if you are not into Australian drag queen buddy movies. Priscilla is a great film though, especially if you are a fan of Hugo Weaving or Guy Pierce.

  29. on July 25, 2008 at 10:54 am cpaig

Back to an earlier topic. I was just re-watching the EXTRA vid from this week and Kevin says that the concept for J.O.N.A.S has changed! So no more spies maybe? Interesting.

    http://extratv.warnerbros.com/2008/07/jonas_brothers_burnin_up_over.php

  30. on July 25, 2008 at 11:09 am flamom

So much interesting stuff here! I loved Muriel’s Wedding. I think I am believing the theory about Move On being Kevin’s song. He does not have a “voice” since he does not sing, but I have heard he writes many lyrics. Plus since he is older he’s had a couple more years to experience relationships. I never get how Nick is so full of material re girls since he was 12, 13, 14 when he wrote so many great songs. He really is an “old soul.”

  31. on July 25, 2008 at 11:16 am coolmom

I love Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, and Muriel’s Wedding too for that matter. And Australian films in general. Have you guys seen Proof?

Re Aly and AJ, I think it’s a put up job. Angst means buzz. You are so right about guys being clueless. And in 7 Things, whoever it’s about, someone wants us to think it’s about Nick. In the vid, when she holds up a picture with a face covered up, you can see the guy is wearing a black and white checked sweater just like the one Nick wears.

So, J.O.N.A.S. concept is changed? Hmmmmm. It’s a wait and see.

  32. on July 25, 2008 at 11:41 am mememoi

    Uh oh – you’ve struck a nerve!

Proof is one of my favorite movies ever!!! Yeah, I was the 14 year old who was fixated on Hugo Weaving. To the point of where I rented some really bizarre efforts of his (there’s this one movie involving Phil Collins….0_o). And Guy Pearce of course. And Russell Crowe in Romper Stomper and The Sum of Us.

I went through a HUGE Australian Quirk phase. I was really into Flirting and its even better sequel (it was supposed to be a trilogy!)

Gillian Armstrong is still my favorite director. In the US, she did the most recent Little Women, but my favorite Australian film of hers was The Last Days of Chez Nous. Yeah, I go on tangents.

I think Strictly Ballroom started it all so (to bring it back around) it always got me psyched that Joe had worked on a Baz Luhrmann production. Once the quirk touches you, it is, obvz, tough to shake.

  33. on July 25, 2008 at 11:56 am coolmom

No lie. I loved Romper Stomper and The Sum of Us. And Little Women. And Strictly Ballroom. You gals kill me. How are you not my long lost sisters? Any other Aussie directors you like? What about Peter Weir?

And are you a Russel Crowe fan? Of his acting, I mean, not his telephone antics?

  34. on July 25, 2008 at 12:23 pm mememoi

I did not follow Russell very avidly after Virtuosity (ha!) but not on purpose…I still feel fondly about him.

No other directors affected me as much as Armstrong – though I have far from seen most of her stuff.

Baz Luhrmann has been consistently awesome to me. Jane Campion is interesting but never thrilled me. Peter Weir I have neglected but you can’t deny Dead Poet’s Society (which was filmed all over our little home turf!) and for Peter Jackson, I will go with that I loved “Heavenly Creatures”. (Cpaig will disagree with me…I am not a Lord of the Rings fan.)

I watched some very bad movies and television (Heaven Tonight and The Adventures of Snowy River) out of my Guy Pearce love.

  35. on July 25, 2008 at 12:43 pm cpaig

I think Heavenly Creatures is a better film than the TLOTR trilogy. Yes I enjoyed those films, but I am married to a geek, what do you want?

She is just busting my chops because I had a thing for Elija Wood (maybe it was foreshadowing – LOL – JK – the Boys TOWER over EW.)

    I enjoy Baz Luhrman.

I can’t whip out names of directors like that.

I’m a big Ang Lee fan (Hulk not withstanding – though I have never seen it). I realize he is not Australian.

I need to go on some more movie jags. Mememoi and our mom are great at it. Our mom is like an expert in Japanese cinema (not including Anime) now thanks to netflix.

It is just so easy now to pick an actor or director or genre even you like and then just do a mini film fest. So much fun!

  36. on July 25, 2008 at 12:56 pm cpaig

OK Ladies, I am signing off for the day – you know, preparations.

I have a bit of a drive ahead of me.

We will fill you in on all the details tomorrow sometime.

We will be thinking of you and will tell the Boys you say “Hi!” – or we will scream at the top of our lungs at them that you say Hi – and they can’t hear us anyway, but they will understand, they will understand.

    :D

    l8r

  37. on July 25, 2008 at 12:59 pm mememoi

Elijah Wood? Foreshadowing? Are you talking about HEIGHT? Oh no you di-int.

  38. on July 25, 2008 at 1:06 pm coolmom

Heavenly Creatures IS good, very early Kate Winslet.

Guy Pearce and Russell Crowe were both great in “LA Confidential”. Guy Pearce is also AMAZING in that mind-f**k of a film, “Memento”. I also enjoyed both “The Time Machine” and “The Count of Monte Cristo”.

Ang Lee is absolutely one of the best directors whose work I have ever had the pleasure to view. And if you knew how many movies I have watched, that is a huge compliment. I’m STILL – and probably always will be – angry that The Academy was too spineless to award “Brokeback Mountain” the Best Picture win it so richly deserved.

Baz Luhrmann is great, I love how theatrical and over-the-top his work is.

Film is my other great passion besides music and theatre. I could go on all day.

  39. on July 25, 2008 at 1:13 pm coolmom

Uh Oh. Is someone vertically challenged?

I know you ladies have lots of prep to do!!!!! So again, safe travels and I hope the concert is a 10 on the d/o (dopamine/oxytocin to the unintiated) scale!!!!!

  40. on July 25, 2008 at 1:18 pm mememoi

We’re pretty average height (slightly above?) – I may have weird height fixations where men are concerned. We are surrounded by taller ones. I know the Boys are of a vaguely modest stature, but I like to think (a) they would still be taller than us and (b) that I don’t care either way (even though between Cpaig and I, I am usually the one to bring it up…and then also object.)

Anyhoot, I’d better get focused too – thanks for the well wishes!

  41. on July 25, 2008 at 2:25 pm flamom

LOL! I don’t think the guys are done growing yet. :) I just read that guys continue growing through their early 20s. I did not know that! But I’m totally fine with 5′8″. My dad and brother were 5′8″. We’re not a tall family either.

  42. on July 26, 2008 at 3:27 am flamom

The CBS Early Morning Show “Time for Me to Fly” is something I watch whenever I need to smile. I just LOVE Nick’s confidence at 11 years old! and the way he takes over the stage. Joe and Kevin are so backing him up here, it’s adorable. Nick and Joe do start crossing over each other a bit too much, but the video is too cute for words. And I love how Nick says he is going to be President. :) His hairstyle and clothing are more than adorable as well.

  43. on July 28, 2008 at 1:26 am flamom

Hope you will all see this …

Rhapsody.com sells MP3 files now. Tonight I purchased SOS and Burning Up from the FMTV appearance – both songs were only $0.99 (they call it an “EP”).

Also Larry King interview will be Tues 8/5.

And they will be on 20/20 Fri 8/1. And of course the Muppet Show on 8/3.

    Lots to look forward to!

  44. on July 28, 2008 at 11:23 am mememoi

Nice tips, thank you!! I used to keep up such a good JB appearances calendar, but lately, I stink at it…

I am still adjusting to the fact that there are so many, they don’t have the time to tell us where/when/why/how every time, unless it’s super major.
